I can understand why professionals consider these multifunctional mics to be expensive and unnecessary, when they already have a mixer and post production tools. For those of us who don't have a mixer, who want a mic that will work with both XLR and USB, this fits a clear niche. After looking at the price of the MV7, I really wanted to like this microphone. But the sound without the EQ is harsh and thin, very hard to listen to.

Woah - I had no idea that the Rode software will handle multiple USB mics on one computer! I'm too far down other 'Rodes' 😉 at this point, but that's some incredibly useful functionality (and information) right there.

5:08 I suppose It's because of very limited frequency graph of PodMic. Although PodMic's description says it supports up to 20 kHz, actually it supports ~13-14 kHz. Fun thing if you listen to Shure Super 55 then, I think you will dislike it too and will come to same conclusion (17 kHz according its passport, but according to actual graph it has about 11.5-13 kHz, thin low mid and harsh upper mids).

@tombuck
@tombuck Жыл бұрын
I would choose the PodMic USB. The Scarlett Solo doesn't have the best preamps, so you might find yourself also needing a booster. Plus the overall sound quality and EQ options via Rode Central are better with the PodMic USB 👍

I wish the price was more competitive. Hard to know what the right price should be though. I am a Sennheiser profile owner and I am very happy with it. So it would have to be pretty close for me to want to "sidegrade". The combo XLR option and software I can say would add to the price a little. How about... 160? Come on, RODE!

Tom, love the channel and watch all of your videos... I am going to be a bit critical on this on as I think you missed the mark on the most important part of this comparison. The new addition to this mic was its usb capabilities... but you recorded everything from this new mic in XLR and then compared it to other mics and switched between xlr and usb depending on which mic it was. So we actually have no reference to how this mic sounds using USB. The other funny part is that you run it through the rode caster... the majority of people who buy a USB mic (myself included) choose that over XLR to simplify their set up. They run it directly into their computer instead of using a peripheral... Once again you did not demonstrate that with this mic or how it would sound. So in reality you just compared the original XLR podmic to a bunch of other mics. So now I walk away from this video not actually knowing anything about the usb capabilities of this mic, which is the entire reason it costs $100 more than the original podmic.

No upgrade in sound quality whatsoever, instead of adding USB and processing and other shenanigans, they should have tried to remove the flaws in the sound of this mic, its still thin, its still sibilant, its still somewhat harsh, no value addition in terms of sound, they doubled the price for USB, but the Sennheiser Profile is way better than this for less, the NT USB Plus is great, but again, still overpriced just like most Rode products nowadays. Disappointed with the Pod 2.0. IMHO, the VMGO II sounds way better than this for spoken word at less than half of the price, you can still use it with all the software and get the same processing on it, plus its most versatile. The Video Mic NTG comes with on body controls and software processing for slightly more than this podmic, and it can do so much more. Their Rode M3 or M2 can totally hit this out of the park for half of this price🤦🏻‍♂️

Great video, Tom! My two cents: If you want to save $, get the previous podmic and find the windscreen from the new one separately (save $70). For the same cost ($130), the Sennheiser Profile gives you way better sound quality and manual controls IMO. However, I do think the NT USB+ is hands down the best mic for the money currently, if you're willing to control it through software.

You're correct that the PodMic was intentionally tuned to be more of a mic that Rode leaves to your vices on how you want to EQ your sound. I'm not sure if it's still produced, but Rode has a Procaster USB model in their lineup, albeit no DSP I don't think. Who makes the colored earpads? Thx for the review!

The sm7b is my favorite but spending that much on a mic is kind of steep right now. ill be honest the rodecaster duo processing is pretty bad in my opinion. i had it for a little while and ended up returning it. it somehow made my ElectroVoice RE20 sound awful. very thin and tinny sound which we all know is the opposite of what an RE20 does. and a very weak 3 band eq (in my opinion not nearly enough for vocals) which could not fix it. Went back to the GoXLR and it sounds great again. i just mentioned it because when you did the Shure Preset it sounded terrible. Rode stuff is so cool except for the sound. which is the most important thing. Really appreciate all your helpful videos though! You do a great job at comparing what's important!

Of the two Rode mics, the newer Podmic USB has a richer tone with no EQ. I noticed the same thing with mine compared, for instance, to the Shure MV7 which to my ears is way to bright without some serious EQ. At least for my baritone speaking voice.

Yes...sort of. You can do a lot with software and mixers (Rode Central is surprisingly powerful when it comes to EQ'ing the PodMic), but I don't think you can totally match the fullness and low end of the NT-USB+ with the PodMic. You can get VERY close, but not exact.

What's strange is for my own ears, the Podmic USB sounds WAY better than the original. Every time I hear an audio example of the original Podmic, I hate the way it sounds. It sounds awful and almost "cheap" to me when compared to other mics in its price point. Which is a shame because I love the design and functionality of it. But if I bought one, I'd have to EQ the heck out it, while not really feeling confident it'll get the point where I'm satisfied with it. But at the same time, paying double the price for the Podmic USB when I would just use it in an XLR setup anyway feels like I'm just throwing money away.

Watching... watching.. and then the moment you switched to (my) MV7 haha, I'm home buddy 🙂 I was well aware that I's using the $150 price difference between the MV7 and SM7B for the funding of my next mic --> enter Earthworks SR314. I'm kinda strategic here because this mic will both suit the studio and livestreaming, as well as be my live mic. Now the ADHD kicked in, I went to re-watch Curtis Judd's video on the SR314, remembered he's just released a course about lighting, checked that out and.. bought it. Tweeted about it, went on doing something else, annotated that I should listen to your podcast while taking the train tomorrow... the time went and now I'm back here to listen to the end and, yeah, that's how my brain works.. or not 🙂

I commented about it under one of your videos around a year ago, but this seems a fitting moment to do it again: FDUCE SL-40. Same functionality as PodMic USB at a *third* of the price ($60 on Amazon when i'm commenting). Solid metal build, looks great, no software. USB-C, 3.5mm and XLR out. Decent sound (to my ear). It's worth getting for a budget mic comparison. When comparable mics are 200-250 dollars it's odd not to hear it mentioned more.
@CARfariPark
@CARfariPark 4 ай бұрын
I recently mentioned the SL-40 on one of Tom's livestreams. I bought 2 XLR versions just so I could have some inexpensive reasonable sounding mics for some client podcasts. Now that may sound counterintuitive but I wanted to be able to have some well made, lightweight gear that could be chucked in a bag, and carried on trains & planes, without risking damaging my SM7Bs or Procasters. Having recorded 4 casts using the SL40s, I love how they sound, with a bit of EQ via my Rodecaster they really punch above their weight, HOWEVER.... the biggest flaws in the SL-40 are now apparent after many hours of use.... handling noise is awful, they pick up everything - footsteps, desk noise, buttons on jackets - far too much! Secondly, the cardioid rejection is very unpredictable. They behave like a heavy noise gate has been applied. Sometimes they pick up cleanly, then on other occasions they simply fade out the vocal, it's not a fault as I have 2 mics and they both behave in the same way. All said and done, for a solo gig or personal hobby, the budget SL-40s are hard to beat, but the 'professional' qualities seen in mics like the SM7B or Procaster are worth the money, in the time saved in post-production.

I like the fact that it’s USB and then open to more people. But I don’t like the fact that it’s double the price. If you can’t afford the RodeCaster then I’d say to future proof yourself and but an original PodMic and a used or new budget zoom recorder like the U-22 and then you already have an XLR “interface” to use with better mics later on. Just my 2 cents.

1:25 weird. Even though you said you rollled off rhe highs in your custom preset, it actually sounds to my ear like more highs were added.

I spent $199 for a Podmic Windscreen. I got a free Podmic USB with my order. Thank you @Rodemic

I'm trying to decide between several mikes and find this attractive because of both interfaces. Can the same effects be done in Logic Pro, if one does not want to use the Rode software packages?

I was wondering if you guys in the US have ever heard of the DT 297 PV MK II. In my opinion, you should try the headset if you get the chance.

Hi Tom, I got the Rodecaster Pro with a podmic microphone, they work amazing and its very easy to use it. On my headphones everything sounds very nice and loud but when I export it and hear it on my computer the volume is quiet low from what I was listenind on my headphones. Any suggestions?

If you record in multitrack, it will always be low, the master compressor doesn't affect multichannel recordings only the Stereo file/

Very eager to try the new Rode Podmic USB! I find the Shure MV7 way too bright and have to boost the low mids and cut the highs to work (more effectively) with my baritone voice. Granted, I use Audacity, so that could be part of the problem. Yours sounded great by comparison, The Samson Q9U is a warmer sounding mic even without any processing,

But its expensive. I'd rather prefer recording my voice through mobile and give it to Zarific to ensure mic quality audio and save money

Does this work with the Rodecaster 1? I’ve already got 4XLR podmics running through it but need an extra slot!

No, the original RCP isn't able to support USB mics

To my ear PodMic USB sounds quite a bit better than original PodMic.
