@GettingthruLife
@GettingthruLife 4 жыл бұрын
@@slipknnnot I have been quoted a lot more than $500. It's more like $800 or more plus the cost of the limited slip diff portion. It takes a skilled person that knows what they are doing to get it to function properly, be reliable and last. You don't want to have a shotty install when it come to the tight tolerances and fitment of differential gears. Too much money for me so I'm not going to go down this road.

@@GettingthruLife this doesn't seem like a horrible job but I'm a technician I work on equipment all the time with much tighter tolerances. Besides with this detailed video it's hard to mess up, he literally breaks down every step. The only thing I am missing is a spring gauge and mounted depth gauge to measure the wobble of the ring gear and the force required to get it moving to make sure there is no excessive friction and even coupling between pinion and ring gear. Everything else is in the factory service manual so you just need a reliable torque wrench and follow the specs. I also have a ton of tools and a compressor and compact aircat impact to make life easy. The only thing missing is a garage and a second car. I have 2012 Civic si I can daily while this thing is torn apart but I need to get it from my parents house. Now if I could find a garage to rent out for a week or two while I work on this project it would be cool, otherwise I'm limited to quick easy bolt on jobs I can do in a day. I did the Akebono brake upgrade, coilovers, intake and high flow cats but the differential is a different level job that will take me much longer than a day so if I can find some skilled mechanics that can do this properly I don't mind paying them $800
@turboleggy
@turboleggy 3 жыл бұрын
@@slipknnnot would you go to a specialist shop or just need a good mechanic? I have a shop that quoted 500 to do it...dude has a 9 sec or less nova and is a drag racer and he seems to know what he is doing more than any other mechanic I've had.

Pro Tip: You were on the right track putting the differential in the freezer but you should have heated your bearings and they would have dropped right on and seated properly. If you think you adjusted bearing preload by moving the bearings you fooled yourself, they will shift if not properly seated. When checking ring gear backlash you need to check a full rotation every 45 degrees and take the average for your actual measurement. Great video you just missed a few details. I hope your diff holds up for you. Personally this is far more effort than I would go to for a street car but I admire your tenacity and ambition.

500 in labor seems like a bargain. I’m sure they would have used more conventional methods but props to you for getting it done.

I would pay $500 in labor any day to get this done properly. I suspect this job will cost upward of $1200 for a shop to do properly... If it's $500 I'll pay np but anything more than that and it's a summer project in my dad's garage

Kudos for up grading your Z. In my younger years, I would be in the same position you are. Now, I am starting to think the $500 is a pretty good deal. :-) The benefit of doing it yourself is two-fold. One you hopefully save money, depending upon tools. Second, you know if you've done it right.

Wish I had watched BEFORE I installed my lsd in my 350 hahaha! Seriously great video, one of the only detailed enough guides to give you all the info you need to do the job yourself. (Edit remember how you said you never wanna reuse the output shaft seals? well I didn't know you had to replace those and now I have a leak :((((( Was wondering if I need to take the diff out of the carrier to remove the seals, or can I pull them out somehow with the carrier still inside???)
@thecarizon504
@thecarizon504 3 жыл бұрын
You should be able to do it by just removing the half axles, you shouldn't need to remove the diff out if the car, unless something gets in the way of pulling those axles out.
@onionknight2775
@onionknight2775 3 жыл бұрын
@@thecarizon504 Alright thanks, knowing my 15 year old car though no way I'm gonna be able to hammer the half axles out without taking off the cover for more swing room. Which means... I have to drop the whole damn carrier XD. (Thanks Nissan!) Getting them out the first time took about 30 minutes of straight pounding. At least I don't have to take the diff out of the carrier then, hate hammering those damn shims inside. I do have to buy more diff fluid then tho... 50 bucks for the fluid I use... Btw how did you measure the backlash, how does that tool you used work, as in what does it like hook up to? I never measured my backlash properly, just kinda wiggled it to see how much play there was. Also, how's the diff holding up so far? Mine (Kaaz 2 way) is pretty smooth on the road, really only somewhat jank at turns under 15, is the tomei any smoother at really low speeds?

I’ll be installing the LSD today and hope it goes smoother than your project.(it probably won’t) I just learned yesterday that the LSD in my G37 is gone so now I’ll be doing the same thing you just did. First off - thanks for SUCH a detailed, thorough and informative video. Secondly, I have a question - at around 30min mark, when you are measuring preload and backlash...you are doing so without the clamps for the diff-beardings installed. ist that ok? Wouldn't they also affect the backlash and preload, as they would tighten it all further down?

Anybody watching this now. Mechanic trick for the carrier bearings when you go to install them. Find an old countertop frier, or get a cheap one from the store, fill it with gear or motor oil and heat the bearings in the oil to get them to expand. Do this combined with the frozen diff and they will just slide right on. Just don't burn yourself ;)
