I lived in Germany for a time it surprised me speaking to some people who use dehumidifiers to take the damp out of the air instead of running their heating system, the common belief is that the damper the air the colder the air and the harder it is to get the air to warm up as you are just heating the Moisture which then condenses so you feel colder, I tried this and it does work the dehumidifier extracted a lot of moisture and the rooms felt warmer with the heating off, I did save a fair bit of money, many Germans are strong advocates for good air flow in the building I visited many people who had a window cracked open a little in the winter at the front of the house and one to the rear. I still use this practice here in the UK ten years later ,I run a standard 20L dehumidifier for three hours in the evening and two hours in the morning it takes a lot of moisture out the house in winter and the air is Drier, & fresher without feeling cold, I also get less coughs and colds it sounds crazy but it does work the more you use the dehumidifier the less you need to have it on in winter also dehumidifiers after extracting the moisture pump out warm dry air which heats the room.

I was married to a heating engineer for 16 years. It always surprises the engineers when they’re servicing the boiler. They tell me to leave it on and they’ll turn the boiler flow temperature down so it doesn’t blast the water but warms it slower. It’s something I’m very grateful to know. It has saved me getting stressed about paying my gas bill. I barely spend more than £15 a week in winter. It’s electricity that’s been the drain. My bill went from £40 to £100 a month on average. That’s ridiculous and practically a small second mortgage for a holiday home. It’s more frustrating as there’s proof out there free energy has been suppressed for decades.

I’m a CIBSE low carbon consultant and a 30 year Building Energy Management System Engineer. Your advice is spot on. It’s the advice that has been given to business for decades. The key to remember is that the central heating is “available” 24/7. That doesn’t mean that it’s “on” 24/7. The fact that it’s available means that you minimise the losses that you would see if the heating was turned off. The key to energy efficiency is minimising and handling the losses. Not just “not using” energy. Think of driving your car with or without cruise control. We all know that, using cruise control, we get to where we’re going in a more comfortable fashion and use less fuel!

Just to set the facts right - Labour introduced the winter fuel payment in 1997. The levels which MPs are entitled to claim allowances were last set by the Tories. The removal of the winter fuel payments is one of the measures attempting to claw back money to keep out schools hospitals and other essential services running after years of neglect. Any pensioner whose income is low enough to entitle them to pension credits (levels set by the last Tory government) remain entitled to support.

For the past couple of years, I have had my thermostat set between 17-19 deg. c during the winter (19 during cold snaps), with the boiler flow temp set at 60. I found that if I didn't have my heating on through the night (particularly during cold snaps), the temperature in the house plummeted to below 10 and it would take at least five hours for it to get back up to the ambient temperature. Also, sometimes I couldn't get the boiler to work as the condensation pipe had froze. I keep my thermostat in the room I use the most, i.e. where I work, and have my radiators set between 2 and 5. I can't say my bills are massively higher this way than just setting my heating to come on at set times. For me, this way is much more efficient.

I'm a single occupier and work from home. I keep my central heating off by default. My controller is >20+ years old but I keep it for it's +1 hr button. If the house feels cold when I get up in the morning I press it to heat the house for an hour, but as often as not I don't need to. If I go out to work then I leave it off til I come home. Often when I come home in the evening, cooking is enough to heat downstairs, perhaps with the living room heated with the gas fire on low. If I feel cold I pull on a sweater first. I'm comfortable with room temperature at 18'C. It's usually only when I'm sitting inactive with the temp dropping to 16'C or so that I push the +1hr button again at which point, just the immediate sensation of warming air temperature is enough to make me feel comfortable again, even at 17'. The only time I leave my heating on is when I go away and leave the house empty. My energy consumption is about 2/3 lower than my neighbours.

@@tomkatgastrainingNo, he doesn't answer that question specifically though gives lots of very good practical advice on reducing heating bills. My answer: cheaper NOT to have heating on all the time. However, there are other cost considerations like keeping pipes from freezing or dampness away. My anseer is based on using a simple physics model where rate of heat loss is proportional to temperature difference. Yes, more energy may be required to bring a building up to a temperature BUT the constant higher rate of heat loss of keeping heating on will always be more. The savings will be smaller when the cooling/heating cycle is more frequent.

We have log burners for winter. The back of the house gets hot if it's a sunny day (no fire days) Yesterday, 24th November - it was warmer outside than in. If I had the temps quoted in this video I'd feel utterly miserable - it would mean I went visiting friends or go shopping more, and therefore would end up costing me money in petrol and shopping. I'd rather stick the heating up for a while. I often wear my dressing gown or a throw wrapped round me. I have been doing this for years, even in summer because it takes far too much energy ti start it up from scratch. My heating engineer said that it was the best way to control your heating. He comes every year just before winter to check on the boiler. This year I ask for a new thermostat, because I had problem seeing the numbers on the old one.He set this up so that I don't need to do anything. He then set the heating to run without any increase. I then turn down the rads to one or two.

The thing that people fail to mention is that when a gas central heating boiler is running, the pump is also too. This means not only gas consumption, but also electric. *The wattage of a gas central heating pump depends on the type of pump and its speed setting, but typically ranges from 50-200 watts* This equates to a running cost for electricity alone of as much as an extra £1 a day at the higher limit. This might not sound much, but in say three months - that is almost an extra £100 on top of your gas consumption. There sre benefits though of keeping your home at an ambient temperature, which is, it helps to prevent your home from becoming damp.

depends on how much heat is lost from each house. If heat loss is great then no dont keep it on. I really think that triple glass is needed in all houses especially the elderly. But heat loss through not having a front door followed by a lobby door.and the back door is worth looking at two. There are quite a few other things that can help to stop heat rising and keeping it at a lower level. A flat master fitted in flats then there is one for houses as well both run one same amount of electric as a light bulb.
@BlackGriffin195Күн бұрын
The heat loss from a from any hollow object is directly related to the temperature difference beteen the inside and the outside. If there is no temperature difference, there is no net transfer out, or in. The greater the temperature difference the greater the heat loss Turn your heating off if you are not in the house. To allow for the time lag, turn it off an hour or two before you go out. Set it to come on an hour or two before you expect to return. If you come back early, put on a fanheater for a few minutes. Warm air systems are great, just minutes before warm is circulating, and similarly, switch off as you go out. Super efficient. (great for air circulation in hot weather without tye need for Aircon)

365 days a year I leave my CH on with room thermostat set at 18 degrees and I never turn it off. I see no point in having a cold house as this is a cause of condensation dampness. North facing windows and door are double glazed and the glass is also covered in bubble wrap. The roof is insulated with 300mm insulation and all walls are made of thermalite block. Annual Gas consumption averages at 5500 KWhs per year.

get temperature/humidity meters to see where you have the main issues (cheap on those internet shops). Check the drains/down pipes and air vents. Once you've got a bit of rot under floor it will re-absorb moisture very quickly. Add a 'dpc' plastic membrane to the underfloor solum/soil (75mm/3" turned up edges) to greatly reduce the moisture coming up from the under-floor. The floor boards radiate heat onto the soil and lift the dampness from the soil into the air and into the house - stop it (the moisture lifting from the soil) with plastic sheet. It's all about nipping each cause in the bud!

Totally dependent on the home and the installation. If you've got a well insulated home with a well insulated installation, pipes are correctly sized, rads are well balanced etc, then leaving the heating on a minimum temperature and just letting it fire whenever it dips below is definitely gonna be fairly cheap.

Having your heating on constantly is cheaper in the long term because you heat up your house and keep topping up the heat periodically and the walls and floors absorb heat from the constant temperature and heat retention in your walls. Good quality curtains and windows keep heat inside the house. Have the heating system set for a couple hours twice a day for running high heat to not completely heat up your home and it returns to colder temperatures quickly when the heat goes off. You furniture can absorb heat from the air temperature in your house. So long as you keep the doors and windows closed where you have the thermostat located and not on the wall or areas where you are opening and closing doors in a main entrance to keep cutting in the heating system. In the long run you can set up your heating system temperature lower temperatures than if you are having your heating come on twice a day. Using a gas fire using more gas than a modern combination boiler or gas boiler system a fire only heating one room. After many years of no central heating system and only a gas fire in one room and a coal boiler for heating water only. And electricity bill for lighting and power supply for appliances was costly and when I got central heating I was using it twice a day for heating and house and hot water for a few hours a day and used the gas fire in between the two settings for mornings and evening heating. Having asthma and arthritis and other issues with health in my children with asthma and taking ill during the night and early hours when the air temperature was colder, decided to trying to run the gas central heating continuously and not use the gas fire. The truth was my bill was lower than using the gas fire and only had the central heating on for a couple hours twice a day and running it up high. Reduced condensation was another factor in mouldy windows and just opened up windows slightly each day and wiping down the inside of my windows for ventilation was essential except the room where the thermostat is placed that can trigger the heating system to cut in and running without cutting out if you have windows open or doors open and letting the colder air flow into the room. Service of the boiler annually is essential for safety and maintenance for an efficient system that reduces the amount of heat that can be reduced by lime scale and partial pressure drops on the radiator system. Check your radiator regularly for leaks and blocking this can cause cold radiator to bleed the radiator and check the pressure gauge on the boiler. Before winter and time for putting the heating on to test run your heating system early beginning of autumn and just running for a few minutes before finding it doesn’t work when you need it when the weather gets cold and you find it doesn’t work for that is when other people are finding out that they need a boiler engineers and demand for a engineer to having to wait for the boiler to be repaired. Before you call for a engineer is checking the radiators and bleed them and check the pressure gauge is in the right position for your system if has dropped it needs topped up to the level it is usually set to. Check the power supply and turn the thermostat up full for a few minutes and turn the boiler on and if it doesn’t cut in the heating does not work for this is when you need to call the gas boiler engineer. Different gas boiler systems have different parts that can fail and need replacing depending on the systems you have installed. Never touch the boiler and recommend turning it off until the boiler engineer comes out to check it. Gas boilers are dangerously underestimated man doesn’t know how Dan gas can be to cause explosion and deaths and destruction of the house and surrounding buildings. Always get a qualified contractor to service the boiler is the only way to be completely safe.

I don't get why you would have the flow temperature set to 55 which seems too low according to the generally accepted advice.
@johnkay94924 күн бұрын
It depends! If the house is built of thermally "light" materials it will respond more quickly to heating being applied when compared with materials which are thermally "heavy". Simply put, if you live in a properly constructed ('cause not all buildings are) house with a timber frame and lots of insulation, such a structure will have a lower thermal capacity than would a stone built cottage. This feature is known as the Admittance (Y value) ie energy flow INTO the fabric rather than Transmission (U value) which is a measure of energy flow THROUGH. Admittance of the stone cottage would improve if the walls were insulated inside to reduce the thermal capacity of the immediate surface. ie You'll feel warmer more quickly. Hey though, give it a go. "Suck it and see," as they say

Not a boiler engineer but here is what I've setup Tado Thermostats and TVRs for individual Room Control (no opentherm, just relay) Boiler with Weather Comp (main reason for not moving to OpenTherm with the Tado, onsite thermister being more accurate than a generated temperature forecasted, especially here). Rooms not in use, 15C, rooms in use, varies but generally 18C. A few rooms set not to call heat but just open the valve to prevent the boiler cycling just for the sake of the vestibule, cant modulate that low. Geofencing so when away from home, automatically set to 15C. Night Time, fallback temperatures kick in, again room dependent. More i want to do, but getting into the fiddly stuff at that point. Still find it weird the number of engineers in this area that didnt even realise it had weather comp. Thankfully got a good local company now that knows 19C is not the flow temperature and I'm not left wondering why my face is starting to melt after a service.

A few things to bare in mind, if a house falls below 15 degrees c, it takes more money per kw of energy to get back to 15 degrees and less energy per kw to go from 15kw to 20 degrees c. Also if you have an unvented cylinder or a gravity cylinder it’s not a good idea to drop the boiler flow temperature to 55 degrees as a cylinder needs to be heated above 55 degrees at least once a week to kill legionella. You get some heat loss in the pipe work from the boiler to the cylinder especially if they are not insulated.

House heating is like a refrigerator, once it is set, it will only start up to maintain the temperature. If you have too large a temperature difference, you'll need more energy to bridge that difference.

My dear old Potterton only has a 1-6 stat-control (6 = 65c), but I have also fitted a Pipe-stat (43c) on the convection feed to the cylinder. The two stats are wired in series so it appears that both will need to be “on” for the boiler to ignite. The pipe stat at 43c will cut first, but always maintaining hot water in the cylinder. The Room-stat only controls a double-pole relay. When it “calls” for heat, one pole switches the CH-pump on and the other pole by-passes the Pipe-stat. The boiler then ignites until its own stat cuts it out at 65c. The radiators get nice and hot and when the Room-stat is “happy”, the relay is switched “off”, the CH-pump stops, the by-pass opens and the Pipe-stat is back in control.
