It works out about £10 a month more in winter to leave the heating on all the time, than when I used to run it at full pelt for 2 hours in the evening and off at other times. I lived in Germany for a time it surprised me speaking to some people who use dehumidifiers to take the damp out of the air instead of running their heating system, the common belief is that the damper the air the colder the air and the harder it is to get the air to warm up as you are just heating the Moisture which then condenses so you feel colder, I tried this and it does work the dehumidifier extracted a lot of moisture and the rooms felt warmer with the heating off, I did save a fair bit of money, many Germans are strong advocates for good air flow in the building I visited many people who had a window cracked open a little in the winter at the front of the house and one to the rear. I still use this practice here in the UK ten years later ,I run a standard 20L dehumidifier for three hours in the evening and two hours in the morning it takes a lot of moisture out the house in winter and the air is Drier, & fresher without feeling cold, I also get less coughs and colds it sounds crazy but it does work the more you use the dehumidifier the less you need to have it on in winter also dehumidifiers after extracting the moisture pump out warm dry air which heats the room.

Thank you for such a great video full of helpfull information. I am a site manager of a school and I keep telling the teachers to set their room thermostats to 21 and leave it there but they don't listen. When the room gets hot, all the children come in, they turn the thermostat fully down. Then when it gets cold they turn it up to 30. Then when it gets too hot they turn it back fully down. I keep telling them they are just chasing the heat. Radiators don't heat up or cool down any quicker by turning from 30 to 16. I'm gonna show them your video on my phone and hopefully they will listen to you. Thank you.

This is true, I had a friend who used to think turning the timer dial on the microwave all the way round to 45 mins heated the food faster. I had to laugh at that one. But its kind of the same mentality that exists I think. Its understandable when one is freezing they want MAX heat, atleast until they no longer feel freezing. They may be unsure whether leaving the thermostat valve set half way may impede the progress of said MAX heat, especially when they don't fully understand the workings behind the thermostat. Perhaps they think its a valve that will cut flow down to half when set half way... and if that were true, it would surely slow down the heating up of the rad. However with there non technical but freezing brain, they don't care and want MAX chance of MAX heat fast, and they dont want that to end until they decide they have had enough. Even I crank my thermostat to max then shut off fully when it gets to hot, and I fully understand how its supposed to work, but desire to control it myself.

For the past couple of years, I have had my thermostat set between 17-19 deg. c during the winter (19 during cold snaps), with the boiler flow temp set at 60. I found that if I didn't have my heating on through the night (particularly during cold snaps), the temperature in the house plummeted to below 10 and it would take at least five hours for it to get back up to the ambient temperature. Also, sometimes I couldn't get the boiler to work as the condensation pipe had froze. I keep my thermostat in the room I use the most, i.e. where I work, and have my radiators set between 2 and 5. I can't say my bills are massively higher this way than just setting my heating to come on at set times. For me, this way is much more efficient.

For an extra £1/day and a really comfortable temperature, without resorting to layers of extra jumpers etc, I'm more than happy. Sometimes you just have to find your own way. The removal of the winter fuel payments is one of the measures attempting to claw back money to keep out schools hospitals and other essential services running after years of neglect. Any pensioner whose income is low enough to entitle them to pension credits (levels set by the last Tory government) remain entitled to support.

I’m a CIBSE low carbon consultant and a 30 year Building Energy Management System Engineer. Your advice is spot on. It’s the advice that has been given to business for decades. The key to remember is that the central heating is “available” 24/7. That doesn’t mean that it’s “on” 24/7. The fact that it’s available means that you minimise the losses that you would see if the heating was turned off. The key to energy efficiency is minimising and handling the losses. Not just “not using” energy. Think of driving your car with or without cruise control. We all know that, using cruise control, we get to where we’re going in a more comfortable fashion and use less fuel!

I was bought up in a house with just gas fires (and nylon nightdresses 🥹). When I left home I had solid fuel heating - which was great. I now have a south facing, well insulated house with under floor heating downstairs and rads upstairs. Comes on twice a day. My low temp is set to 18deg top to 23deg (winter setting). We have log burners for winter. The back of the house gets hot if it's a sunny day (no fire days) Yesterday, 24th November - it was warmer outside than in. If I had the temps quoted in this video I'd feel utterly miserable - it would mean I went visiting friends or go shopping more, and therefore would end up costing me money in petrol and shopping. I'd rather stick the heating up for a while. I often wear my dressing gown or a throw wrapped round me. I don't drink or smoke and go on few holidays - these are choices - and I'd rather be cosy in my home if I can afford to. It's a home not a house.

As a single man, I only need the warmth of one room at a time. After checking through old bills and experience, I cut off my gas completely, bought a 3kw electric jet style space heater which takes about 10 minutes to heat a room to toastie and then the thermostat kicks in for a couple of minutes in every 10-15. Just the saving in gas standing charges is enough to take a little of the concern out of the monthly bill and any extra electricity consumed

As a Kw of electricy costs four to five times more than a Kw of gas where available gas (despite tbe extra standing charge) still remains the cheapest form of heating. A Kw of gas or electricity produce the same amount of heat.

@@DelTangBrav Agreed, however the map is not the territory and, in my experience, 15-20 minutes an hour of a space heater provides a more tangible heat to a room than my gas radiators (cleverly placed under windows!!!). Also, by fitting electrically heated taps, I save on water and hot water, heated by gas, going cold in the pipes.

PS we also have realistic gas 'fires' in our front room and separate dining room, so we have more local control. I'm also sure that closing doors to rooms you use less frequently, whilst maintaining a minimum temperature, is beneficial overall. Thanks for all the advice at an appropriate time of the year!

When we lived in the UK we used to leave the heating on all the time at a certain level so the house never got cold and the theiry about thus then was you never needed to warm the house up when the heating had been switched off. Leaving the heating on all day at 21 degrees with all the radiators set to 3 would cost £7 a day. Vs £2-£2.50 currently. As. A single parent that’s a big deal, and I simply can’t afford for every room to be cosy, given that I spend most of my time upstairs anyway

@@PotatoPirate123Ultimately, picking and choosing when you have your heating on will save you the most money. That’s what we have to do because we’re on a tight budget. @@station-7 this is it. The people who say theirs barely costs any more or costs the same probably live in a mega insulated new build. They get a bad rap but I would LOVE a new house. Don’t find my crumbly, damp, smelly, dusty Victorian house all that special and would rather be warm than gaze lovingly at the high ceiling and red brickwork. Last night I experimented with changing the flow RIGHT DOWN to 45 degrees. I turned all the heater TRVs down to reflect how warm I’d want each room to be (2 in some rooms and 3 in other). I set the heating to basically be ‘on’ all day in the sense that the programmer unit was set to different temps throughout the day, with 10am-5pm set to 17 degrees. Despite this, it still cost me almost double the cost of heating just the upstairs for 5 hours the day before, with those rooms being significantly warmer! This was also based on it being a quite nice day yesterday - a mild 13 degrees

@@PotatoPirate123 We set ours to 18C all day and 14C at night. I did a lot of watching the smart meter for weeks and that set-up was the cheapest possible, other than not heating the house at all (which was causing black mould). Otherwise the boiler was thrashing itself and the house was still freezing! It took months for the house to get warmed through, then our costs dropped massively. We air the house out as well, once a day at 9am, that helps.

I was married to a heating engineer for 16 years. It always surprises the engineers when they’re servicing the boiler. They tell me to leave it on and they’ll turn the boiler flow temperature down so it doesn’t blast the water but warms it slower. It’s something I’m very grateful to know. It has saved me getting stressed about paying my gas bill. I barely spend more than £15 a week in winter. It’s electricity that’s been the drain. My bill went from £40 to £100 a month on average. That’s ridiculous and practically a small second mortgage for a holiday home. It’s more frustrating as there’s proof out there free energy has been suppressed for decades.

@ we’ve been kept as slaves for too long. I keep positive things will change as more people wake up. There’s a guy in Africa that was powering a whole town from the “ether”. I worry that after his clip went viral (naively shared) that he may have been taken away somewhere. I’ve not seen or heard of him since. Others that have tweaked their car engines to run on water…. The first guy died after leaving restaurant where he had meeting with Ford I think. All stolen and patented. Porsche are releasing a car to run on water but obviously it’s not going to be affordable to everyone. There’s no profit in that. The final control is the electricity, all the internet and web 3 need it to run. Our “currency” will soon be reliant on electricity. We will have to choose what we can do with it before it expires. We have a huge fight on our hands.

They send you statements not bills. A bill has to have a signature on it. There’s so many loopholes to be taken advantage of if you’re able to find them and stand on your principles. Worked for a major energy supplier for a decade and saw so many people get into serious debt for trying to keep the thermal mass above 20c. It's a great idea if you have a modern home with great insulation standards, if you live in a old property with poor or aging insulation you can end up owning many hundreds and even thousands extra when you are billed up to date. The advice given in the video is very solid, if you have the right setup then it can work. For the average UK sadly it is a disaster waiting to happen.

Not much I can do about that as I live in a rented prop. but just turning the flow temp up 5 or 10 degrees sorts it out, which means the property heats up quicker and the stat shuts it off sooner.

Funnily enough I woke up to no heating today, rang housing, gave them the error code, it was pressure that had dropped... Soon sorted it myself... I leave my central heating at 14-15 degees C all year, then heat individual rooms (depending on which im using) with a space heater set for 19 degrees (which is around 21 at body height) and keep the doors closed, at night i move the space heater onto the landing, set it for 17 degrees all night, then it switches to 19 degrees 1 hour before I wake up, just to take the edge off. Having thermostat control on space heaters is essential for reducing energy consumption. During the day I will quite happily over fill the kettle, and I use a normal oven to cook my tea, because despite the bad advice from the idiotic media journalists, it's not a waste of energy at all, it just goes into the house and supplements your heating, so your heating does slightly less work. They seem to think that we need to compartmentalise everything, "this is a heater it heats things, this is a cooker it cooks things, if we leave the cooker on for too long it's a waste of energy". What we should be thinking is "oh i'm sitting in a room with a PC that consumes 500w, that's probably 400w of heat, so therefore I need less heating to reach an optimal room temperature, so maybe if I shut the door I could turn the central heating down/off and require no extra heating at all". If we're going to stop wasting energy, be it gas or electric, we need to stop listening to advice from people working in a lab, passed onto journalists and passed off in a news article as "heating expert, Fred the plumber", and start listening to people with some practical real world knowledge.

I'm a single occupier and work from home. I keep my central heating off by default. My controller is >20+ years old but I keep it for it's +1 hr button. If the house feels cold when I get up in the morning I press it to heat the house for an hour, but as often as not I don't need to. If I go out to work then I leave it off til I come home. Often when I come home in the evening, cooking is enough to heat downstairs, perhaps with the living room heated with the gas fire on low. If I feel cold I pull on a sweater first. I'm comfortable with room temperature at 18'C. It's usually only when I'm sitting inactive with the temp dropping to 16'C or so that I push the +1hr button again at which point, just the immediate sensation of warming air temperature is enough to make me feel comfortable again, even at 17'. The only time I leave my heating on is when I go away and leave the house empty. My energy consumption is about 2/3 lower than my neighbours.

I've never really understood the "lower boiler temperature" advice - given that a house, for any particular internal/external temperature, structure etc., will require a specific amount of energy to raise to and maintain the desired internal temperature. Surely lowering the boiler flow temperature will mean it takes longer to heat the property (the same amount of energy will still be required). I guess there would be less flue losses with the lower temperature but would that compensate for the additional electrical cost of running the pump and flue fan for longer?

This means not only gas consumption, but also electric. *The wattage of a gas central heating pump depends on the type of pump and its speed setting, but typically ranges from 50-200 watts* This equates to a running cost for electricity alone of as much as an extra £1 a day at the higher limit. This might not sound much, but in say three months - that is almost an extra £100 on top of your gas consumption. There sre benefits though of keeping your home at an ambient temperature, which is, it helps to prevent your home from becoming damp.

Next time a tenant ask me that 10 million $ question I’m going to send them a link to this vid, fed up of trying to explain this to somebody that’s never going to understand the answer, they usually say the man on the telly said if I turn my heating down by 1 degree I can save about £300 a year so they turn it down 3 or 4 degrees expecting big savings and call you up complain the heating is not working 🤔

Insulation Insulation Insulation. Agree with you. We have an air source heat pump - the heating element of it goes on in late october and goes off when the last frost comes in the spring. The radiators are ticking over low heat so that our temp never goes below 20 in the winter. We have solar panels so all our costs are offset by those during the year. Turning it off means that everything has to heat from cold which uses far more energy. Sense at last. Thankyou.

If you turn off the boiler you use less gas - it’s physics and logic. My heat is off at night and then I boost it for an hour at a time during the day - tiny bills and warm when needed and cold when not.

So using that logic.. drive your car at 100 mph for 1 hour, then drive same trip at 50 mph for two hours. By your logic the faster trip is more efficient because the car is running for half the time.

@@pmac6584no not that at all. What I’m avoiding is wasteful use of heat. There Is no logical reason to run a gas boiler ticking over just to be warm for the couple of hours you need the warmth. So in your analogy I’d drive 20 miles instead of 100.

After a few years of monitoring daily oil consumption and outside weather conditions for or house. I agree with what u are saying hear. Its more economical to keep heating on 100% of the time and let the room states do there thing. Insulation is key as is draft proofing. Them patio doors in the bed room will be a big source of heat loss for you

I don't think you answered the question in the title, unless I missed it. Is it cheaper to leave your heating on 24/7 or not. In a well insulated property I wouldn't expect the temperature to drop from 19°C to 15°C overnight, so you are effectively turning your heat off overnight.

@@tomkatgastrainingNo, he doesn't answer that question specifically though gives lots of very good practical advice on reducing heating bills. My answer: cheaper NOT to have heating on all the time. However, there are other cost considerations like keeping pipes from freezing or dampness away. My anseer is based on using a simple physics model where rate of heat loss is proportional to temperature difference. Yes, more energy may be required to bring a building up to a temperature BUT the constant higher rate of heat loss of keeping heating on will always be more. The savings will be smaller when the cooling/heating cycle is more frequent.

I have my house set to a minimum of 17 when we are not in and 20 in the morning and 20.5 in the evening. The reason for the 17 is that the house takes a long time to climb back from 14 to 20 c I don’t know if this is the most economical way to heat the house but this works for us

Totally dependent on the home and the installation. If you've got a well insulated home with a well insulated installation, pipes are correctly sized, rads are well balanced etc, then leaving the heating on a minimum temperature and just letting it fire whenever it dips below is definitely gonna be fairly cheap.

I’ve been experimenting for 3 years with flow temperatures, TRV settings and heating options. I have an Octopus Mini so I can get regular readings from my smart gas meter. By far the cheapest way to heat my house is to turn off the radiators in the rooms I don’t use very much and isolate them by shutting the doors. And I only turn the heating on when I need it. I have a modern condenser boiler and the flow is currently set to 60, which is the best balance. The difference between leaving all the TRVs between 2 and 3 and turning all all the radiators I would ordinarily set to 2 and isolating the rooms is about a 50% saving, which is a lot of money to me

I agree with this video almost completely. The only thing I think may be wrong is the 10% difference for 1° on the thermostat. I've been experimenting for years with this, and I'd suggest a 3% to 5% difference depending on your set up. Also, I dont like to wear more clothing to keep warm as this can be a false economy. Keep the house nice and warm and dry which will help to avoid costly maintenance in the future caused by damp. Keep warm everyone🙂
