My experience with tarantulas and other insects started with volunteering at my local museum. I trained with an entomologist and jumped right into caring for advanced species like P.regalis and P.murinus. As well as caring for countless other species of tarantulas and arthropods. In all this time, I’ve never had any problems with Poecilotheria sp. I’ve received more defensive behaviour from Lasiodora sp. than pokies. In any case, videos like yours are super important because they are NOT sensational clickbait. Your videos are educational and you present safe and practical techniques that I can actually use while working with these amazing animals. Thank you!

So the p.regalis was my very first T and I had her for 10 years and she was amazing. She went through a phase as a sub adult where she was defensive but other than that she never gave me much trouble. So beautiful. While I personally wouldn’t advise it as a first T I learned a ton and it was amazing. Had her for 10 years

P. regalis is defintely underrated Poeciltheria. Everybody wants the metallica, my favorites are the regalis, miranda then metallica. A beautyful animal!

Big beautiful spider. My sling/juvie has always remained out in the open and i have to do quite a bit to get it to retreat even when im moving its enclosure around. Maybe that will change one day. Maybe it will change today sonce it just molted again. This will be its first molt after having regenerated its new leg. Its still curled up and cleaning itself so maybe ill get to see it in all its glory by tmrw. I always rewatch your care and rehouseing videos when i get spider news from within my little gang.

I watched this one a while ago but had to watch it again since I am now the proud owner of my favorite Pokie species (regalis)! My first old world!!!!! I bought the T and the enclosure together which was 120 USD. It is about 3.5 to 4 inches DLS and it is in a Exotera Nano Tall. Cork bark and substrate was included! It already has the web curtains and is well established in it's enclosure. It does have the mesh top so I will have to find one of your other videos for the 3D printed tops. If you have a link to the video it might help but I am sure I will find it. Dang! even 2 years ago Billie was killing it with the vids! Thank you sir for the podcasts and your videos! I have 7 other people and a few forums that I watch and read and all have the same care. Yes. You can put this on your podcast lol. I need to clean the poo off the glass tomorrow, but today I am enjoying the moment! I hope it is a female! Next molt will tell! Either way I am still very excited! My last T will be the OBT. I have limits and 10 is that limit. If I can afford a larger apartment or house in the future I might increase my limit. For now I am happy with my 10 limit. I have 40 more I want but space is a thing and I know my limits. Best of wishes and hoping you can avoid as much illness in the future as you can!

When I first was interested in tarantulas, I learned about the NW vs OW species. I decided on my Avic avic which I bought April 2019 and really had no interest in OW, but after watching your videos and listening to your podcasts (yes, I do both haha), I am reconsidering. I don't see myself owning a ton of spiders but there are a few on my lists. Thanks for having such educational, non click baity videos. Also I had previously asked you about my T being too cold in my 100 year old farm house due to an old diesel fueled furnace. I took your advice and I jerry rigged a heating mat for some indirect heat for my poor little guy which has brought his temps closer to 70°, hoping he will want to eat now. Thanks for your help.

I tried feeding him again but he still wasn't interested though . A member of a popular tarantula group told me that Avics are just weirdos sometimes haha. I think I may try smaller crickets. I buy large because I also have a Bearded Dragon so it's easier.

I don't think I really ever thought about it but now that you mention it my pokies do seem to relieve themselves on the "sunnyside" of the enclosure. I wonder if it's either because they want to block light or to do their business away from their home. As this will help keep their house cleaner and to keep potential predators from their location. Another great rehouse Tom, thanks for sharing great ideas. It is so true that a lot of re-housings are probably done on the fly and that's when accidents happen.

Just picked a couple of these over the holidays. They're under or around 2". I was a bit apprehensive about getting into the pokies, the whole "teleporting" thing is a bit scary. Nice transfer. Also, its interesting to see them housed in what I might call a "non-traditional" arboreal enclosures. I was actually glad to see that. About half my collection is arboreal now and I was wondering if I had shot myself in the foot, enclosure wise, having gone that route. It looks like xtra-large critter keeper, or other similar type, more traditional enclosures are ok to use. Kind of a relief. I hate wasting money and in this hobby, the more you can save, the more Ts you can get. :-)

Hey, bud! I've kept 14 different species, and I haven't had any issues with them. The potential is always there, but I think that in most circumstances it's avoidable. Yeah, I've done a lot of experimenting with arboreal enclosures, and I find that I like ones that leave more room up top for me to work. I've used those x-larges for quite a lot of them, and they work great. And I agree completely! hahaha

Another great video Tom. I love my P Regalis but it was my nemesis when i first got it. Best laid plans....however ! I was what I thought well prepared for the rehouse but it found the smallest of gaps, shot out, ran up my arm then off and disappeared. I found it three days later sat on the T room ceiling and I swear I heard it laughing at me. I named it Hairy Houdini in honour of it's escapoligy tactics. I still love it though.

Just grabbed the pokie “kit” off TSS - I’ve already extensively researched all of the species I’d like to own, but I’ve found a lot of the information around pokies especially makes them sound like total devil children lol. Damien! Yup, that was EXACTLY what I was going for. Normally, I wouldn't do this, but I've been doing a lot of stuff with Old World species lately, and I'm trying to take away some of the stigma. I'm tired of folks talking about them like they are just a bite waiting to happen. That's not true. There are plenty of precautions a keeper can take to mitigate the risks. When I rehouse I assume beforehand I am going to have problems and try to prepare accordingly. I have several catch cups available, several paint brushes and straws. I have various pieces of poster board cut of varying sizes. I rehouse in a plastic tub that I moisten the interior walls and have a "belt" of petroleum jelly around the top of the interior walls. I also use one of your tricks of putting wads of paper in the corners for hides. I take my time and try not to stress the spider any more than absolutely necessary. Knock on wood I've never had a escape or threat posture while rehousing. The key I think is being prepared beforehand like you mentioned. How much easier would it be if we could train them with voice commands like we do our dogs? Lol!!

That's the way we approach it; plan for the worst and hope for the best! haha I think the trick is to be as prepared as possible and to be ready to adjust (and to stay calm) if things don't go the way you planned. Hi, I saw you like your Poecilotheria adults in 19-38 litre tubs. I have to confess I have my large 5.5 inch Regalis in a 70 litre tub. It's packed with furniture,a large cork tube a couple of pathos,other plastic plants and a large solid wooden branch,which she climbs around on at night time.Subtrate is 2/3 inches deep,so it's quite packed out,with plenty of hiding places and gives The Regalis good security- I think lol... Would you say based on this thar 70l tub is tooo big ?? Thanks Tom... James

Hi, James! There is nothing wrong with giving them larger enclosures as long as they have a secure hide and some folliage. That will embolden them to do a bit of exploring when the lights go off. I have a few of my pokies in 12 x 12 x 18h tanks now, and they tend to just hide in their burrows. That said, the space isn't wasted. Hope that helps!

Hey Tom, Thanks for the reply 👍 Yes I've seen my Regalis out several time during the night when the lights are out and exploring her enclosure.During the day,she just hides and I see her tucked up in her cork tube safe and sound,but comes out at night and does her thing.Ive used the 12x12x18 exo terra in the past and they are fantastic enclosures ! I just feel more satisfied using a bigger enclosure,for the the Tarantulas benefit,but with this I've had to use plenty of furniture so she can hide and feel secure ..... In India,they have the whole country as their enclosure,but tend to pick a tree to live in.So I'm thinking it's the same in an enclosure,you can you large ones,but just make sure it's packed out to give them security 👌

Very relieved that the rehouse went without a hitch. It could have ended up problematic. Obviously, this is a species I'll likely never consider getting because of the speed and potent venom, but I admire those that keep them responsibly, such as yourself. Once again, very nice vid. We've had our regalis 13 years now! Completely underrated in my opinion. Beautiful spiders! I always look forward to your videos, i feel even if we've been keeping spiders for many years now we can always learn something on your channel. Keep up the good work! Maybe you've got some advice for me though. . yesterday i discovered one of our slings dead, it could have been cause the box dried out and i didnt see it on time. Really beating myself up about it... have you had similar experiences? I feel like a bad keeper now although all of our Ts have done great for many, many years...

I often worry that some of this stuff is only useful to newbies. :) Awwww...I'm so sorry to hear that. Yes, I've had it happen...and I still feel terribly about it. I had an A. anax sling years ago that I didn't moisten enough, and I found it dead. It was TOTALLY my fault, and it was totally preventable. Part of the problem was that I thought that it was an arid species, so I didn't need to be as diligent. I was dead wrong. I did learn from it, however, and I think that's important. Still, I know exactly how you feel. :(

oh wow i never really thought about it until now but I think its true - pokys like to poo in the sunshine 😂😂 i have kindve weird selection of pokys, an ornata, a striata and a miranda and yep, even tho they would normally run from the light the poo in their enclosures is on the side facing the lightest part. although thinking about it, maybe thats because its the furthest away from where theyve made their hides, which is in the darkest parts away from the light, like maybe the instinct is more about keeping their hides clean...idk or maybe they just like the feel of the sun on their bum while they poo 😂

I got sick of trying to get the green out of it due to the green screen. haha I know so folks have kept them communally, but I couldn't find a lot of info about how they do once they get larger. Someone I spoke to recently had 10 of them together, and I guess they were doing well. I would imagine that they would be very similar to the P. metallicas!

Tom Moran luckily it did actually bolted on me twice lol after it settled in it’s enclosure it put dirt in the cap where I put the war so I took it out n when I put it back in an started filling it with water boom bolted haha it’s quite nice though it’s a 1 inch but I still enjoy looking at it trying to hide behind the fake plant.

Hi, David. All of the Poecilotheria species I have kept, including the regalis, have burrowed a bit until they hit about 4" or so. At that point, they will still hide, but you'll catch them out on their cork bark more often.

Hi Tom. I have a question about feeding arboreals. I only have a handful of them, all slings except for a juvie a. minatrix and p. irminia. I struggle with trying to get them to eat because they're all so reclusive and they have webbing, dirt curtains, or some other means of hindering my ability to get prey to them. The aboreal species I have currently are a. minatrix, p. Striata, p. pulcher, p. irminia, p. cambridgei. Most of them (except the pokie actually) stay hidden all of the time. I haven't seen my p. irminia in 6+ weeks. Is it ever acceptable to just leave a cricket in the enclosure if they're being reclusive about coming out and check back a day later? I've heard crickets can be risky to leave in. Terrestrials are just so much more straightforward for me. Thanks in advance.

Hello, Justin! My Poecilotheria and Psalmopoeus species have all been excellent hunters. They would all come out at night to hunt, and I never had an issue with them finding prey. They will also usually close off their burrows when in premolt. I would drop something in over night, and remove it if it's still there the next day. My Avicularia, on the other hand, seem to a little more tricky at times. Is the A. minatrix hunting okay?

@@TomsBigSpiders Thanks for responding! I tried leaving crickets in my psalmopoeus' enclosures overnight and so far I haven't found a trace of them so I suppose it may have worked. My A. Minatrix has always been more difficult to feed. She's in one of the taller AMAC boxes flipped upside down (with cork bark glued in to the upper part, all webbed up) so I don't destroy her webbing when I open it, but that makes her even more difficult to feed. She's not eaten in 3 weeks, but I just found out she molted maybe 4 days ago (she's reclusive so I didn't see it happen). She's still ignoring prey so I'm guessing she's not ready yet. Even before pre-molt I would have to flip the top upside down and drop a cricket in so it fell on her webbing and 4 out of 5 times she wouldn't eat. Anyway, thanks again I'm a newish keeper (started last Nov) but I already have 33 tarantulas so your husbandry videos have been incredible references.
