It's a surprisingly brilliant combination of "try not to laugh" and Roast. TNTL they rarely have much prep time, so they have to adlib everything with no backup plan if it doesn't work, and then throw together another for the next person. They have time to perfect one bit for these and give it their best. Roast is intended to be very pointed at the roastee so every joke is required to have a target, which doesn't really allow much room for characters. For these, Ian can literally ignore the roastee and just promote Smosh merch and still have it be successful. This combination gives us the very best of both worlds.
