Well folks, reading through the comments there are many who don't like Tommy for many reasons and that's OK. However there are often too many "Masters of the Universe" out there who criticize just about everything. Cool it and realize how boring the world would be if everyone played something the same. Stop playing the role of the "Observer Critic" and realize the beauty of a Performance for what it is. Especially a live performance which is a one-time expression of art! Tommy is an entertainer, a showman, and a great on-stage personality. Oh by the way, up there with the best in the world players . The best, maybe yes maybe no but among them. Learn to enjoy the variation in the art form and appreciate the effort to produce it. A child banging on a pot or a performance in a grand venue, its all an expression of the art form and should bring a tear to one's eye rather than a critical tongue.

On top of all that, Tommy is a genuinely warm, generous, and good human being. The world needs a lot more of his type and a lot fewer of some other types.

Early on, Chet always said his style was greatly influenced as a result of listening to 3 great guitarists from that era: Merle Travis, Django Reinhardt, and Les Paul. As Chet heard great guitarists later on, he progressed his style to incorporate the sounds of the day, including rock, pop, jazz, and classical). This raises the question of how many great fingerstyle guitarists of this day (like Tommy Emmanuel, Richard Smith, Doyle Dykes, David Paul, Sean Weaver, among others), would be totally unheard of had it not been for the influence of Chet Atkins?

Doug Hendrixson Chet’s sound was effortless. It was a total honoring of the song. Not a harsh note. Not a tasteless note. He was silk. Tommy plays too hard, too fast and he embellishes too much. Of course he’s talented. None of these dozen players is not. I could listen to Chet until I die. I can’t listen to Tommy for more than two cuts. Which doesn’t mean that I denigrate his talent. It’s his taste and ego that grates me. He’s a show off. It’s annoying. Now there’s probably an idiot that will now ask me if I can play it better. No. I can’t. I hope the idiot is now satisfied. I can’t sing opera either. So I guess I’m not allowed to say that Luciano Pavarotti gives me a headache while Giuseppe di Stefano does not. Idiot.

You can tell why Chet got rich and Tommy didn’t. Chet honors a song. Tommy doesn’t. He plays everything fast and sloppy and uses every song as a vehicle to show off. It’s incredibly annoying. Plus his time is erratic.
@aussiedadreviews6 жыл бұрын
I think you are greatly mistaken my friend. Tommy is more diverse. Your judgement is erroneous.
@tylerwilson95156 жыл бұрын
Lol what are you talking about?
@DUGGER19476 жыл бұрын
Chet got rich, in part, due to his role as head of recording operations for the RCA Victor Nashville Sound Studio. He got the name Mister Nashville along with the nickname Mister Guitar. He had a keen ear for not only the guitar, but everything it took to put out quality records for many recording artists for many years. Chet was a perfectionist. While many have copied him, I can tell an actual Chet recording every time. With all due respect, Tommy Emmanuel is a better entertainer than Chet, because live entertainment and mastery of a wide range of music is his forte. Chet was almost robotic and made it look so nonchalant and easy it was easy to dismiss the fact that what he was playing was extremely difficult, obtainable by very few. Tommy is one of those few.
@daveedmunds46096 жыл бұрын
I agree! Tommy's version of Classical Gas is an abomination. He rips the heart, soul, and beauty from the Mason Williams classic.
@Geotubest6 жыл бұрын
Robert, I agree. Every time I see TE play a song, I feel it's more about him and his extraordinary abilities than the song itself. I feel the best musicians, or at least the ones I enjoy the most, make the performance more about the song than themselves.
