I was privileged to meet Tommy many times,I worked in a shop in hampstead..he used to pop in.."just like that..not this..like that" How he made us laugh.. he often gave us tickets to see him.. This may seem a very old and out of hand joke,but I know he would have liked this..so here goes.. "How did Tommy die? Just like that.." Bless you Tommy,and thank you...

Tommy Cooper is pure comic genius. What is so admirable is the pure silliness he manages to turn into audience laughter. We will not see his like again. I doubt those raised on American 'humor' will get him and sadly that is their loss. There is so much more to comedy than the American put down that is now so very common.

I love British comedy esp Tommy Cooper Benny Hill Eric Sykes etc I completely get it and I'm American! Don't lump us all in the same category not all of us are idiots!!!
@dntskdnttll3 жыл бұрын
@@emilywhitfield2780 Additionally there were old-school comics in the US who were similar, and it’s the era more than just the country that influences it. Modern “comedy” tends towards the cynical, mean, and leans on unnecessary sex references (ok if they’re funny, but they’re added in places they don’t even add anything) just to prop it up, as much as the putdowns. Comedy used to be silly, goofy, and very sincere, with sarcasm still being used but differently - and much more physical comedy. The modern comic considers this embarrassing as it’s too sincere for his ego - easier to punch down on someone else. Agreed with the original comment but Americanness is not the problem. Coldness and a loss of creativity are.
@emilywhitfield27803 жыл бұрын
@@dntskdnttll I understand your point and I was inferring to what Mr Fox said about Americans not getting British humor! Your re right! It doesn't depend on the country! My favorite TV show during the 70s was The Carol Burnett Show! I loved the skits and the general silliness of that show!! Bob Hope, The Marx Brothers and Buster Keaton are great examples of American comedy! Today's comedians are vulgar and stoop to insulting others! I miss those comedy shows of the past but they are long gone I'm afraid!!

I have been told that Tommy Cooper would dry out his old teabags and kep a few in his wallet. If he was approached in the street he'd pull his wallet out, take a large denomination note out and show it to someone and then place the note in their top pocket and say "Go and have a drink on old Tommy in that pub down there, the landlords an old mate of mine!" So off they'd trot, go into the pub and say to the landlord "I've just met Tommy Cooper and he gave me some money for a drink" Then they would pull an old teabag out of their top pocket! Tommy had used sleight of hand to swap the note for an old tea bag. Comedy genius!
