The real genius of Tommy here is his absolute command of not only the audience but of the dynamics of the gag itself. I loved watching him perform. Blessed to have seen him so many times. You just know he's up in Heaven cracking them all up. When my youngest heard the news about Tommy's death, we were all in the kitchen and he said, "God must of needed cheering up." I still get a bit teary when I think of that.

What a subtle, agile mind. He understood that people were laughing about whether the bloke would come back or not, even though it had nothing to do with the joke. So he gently pushed that until he'd used all the comic potential in it. Today's comedians wouldn't have spotted that in a thousand years.

It reminded me of John Cleese as Dennis Moore speculating to the people in the coach he was holding up if he could hit a distant tree with one of his pistols, I'd say about 7 times in 10...it depends on how much practice I'd got in during the week...maybe 8.
@AthelstanEngland4 ай бұрын
You may be right but he was absolutely meticulous with his preparation so I suspect that was all planned... he knew his audience would find the first 'ad lib' funny in advance. Either way the guy was a genius, unique and blessed with perfect comic timing.

As every one else states on here, he was a comedy genius, who could take a very simple and not that funny punch line and turn it into a surreal and pretend argument with the audience. I have read that much of his routine was improv based on a few jokes he intended to use. Where as Frankie Howard who I liked as well, would go for walks in the country and practise his act, over and over again, some times a 100 times and every titter, look and 'ney missus' were set in concrete for that show. Both made me laugh but on being a funny person, ie a comedian as oppose doing comedy in all ways Tommy Trinder is up there with the greats.

I know that us folks of a certain age are not on the new,alternative observational wavelength, however what we did have was comedians that were funny , daft and funny . I watch the Apollo live “comedy” thing , the funniest I’ve seen , in my opinion is Jimoen. No sweary dick, tit and toilet gags or dare to shock and insult unlike what most of the others seem to resort too . They have to be different, they have to be in your face , they have to be cutting edge , they have to be vulgarly rude , the cameras pan around the audience, showing people in hysterics ; I watch and wonder ; I get it but just don’t find it laugh out loud funny. I saw Tommy Cooper on 3 consecutive nights , he did mostly the same routine every night , he was uproariously funny and daft every night , a lot of the time you knew what was coming , ….. I could barely cope with one performance by most of the present lot ………. Who is that shouty,gravel voiced Welsh man ? Imagine listening to him raving-on for 3 nights on the bounce ? Dear,dear me. Ok, I’m an auld git , but I’ve seen good and funny comedians performing live . Why on earth have I bothered writing all this ………
@Pikestnt11 ай бұрын
I’m sorry but it’s such a cliche to say “Modern comedians aren’t funny. Not like in my day” There are good and bad comedians in every era. The material changes and being older, you might not get or appreciate the references but that doesn’t make someone unfunny. Both Barry Cryer and Bob Monkhouse supported and appreciated young comedians. (I’m 60 btw) Oh and I’m not really sure why I felt the need to say all this either 😀
