Two-time Grammy nominee Tommy Emmanuel is one of Australia's most respected musicians. The legendary guitarist has a professional career that spans five decades and continues to intersect with some of the finest musicians throughout the world. A household name in his native Australia, Tommy has garnered hundreds of thousands of loyal fans worldwide. Tommy's unique style -- he calls it simply "finger style" -- is akin to playing guitar the way a pianist plays piano, using all ten fingers. Rather than using a whole band for melody, rhythm, bass, and drum parts, Tommy plays all that -- and more -- on one guitar. Guitar legend Chet Atkins was one of the first to inspire Emmanuel to try this "fingerpicker" style as a child. Decades later, Atkins himself became one of Emmanuel's biggest fans
AIM
Integration is the name of the game at AIM with six music departments on offer. Students focus on one major area of study but can integrate across other areas of study through a wide range of elective choices. AIM departments include; contemporary performance, music theatre, classical performance, composition and music production, audio technology and entertainment management, taught by some of the finest industry practitioners available in Australia
So whilst a student may for example take audio as their major study, they can also choose to take units from any one of the other five major areas. In this way, students build a portfolio of music, audio, entertainment & business skills to create diverse career opportunities.
From AIM's annual showcase where students have the opportunity to perform on stage with full production to a full house, comes smaller creative projects where the journey of writing, producing and recording a song in the studio can be documented on video and placed on the web through AIMtv, as part of the AIM learning and artist development experience.
At the completion of two years of intensive study at AIM, students graduate with a Bachelor of Music degree majoring in one of six areas or a Bachelor of Entertainment Management. Equipped with state of the art Q Recording Studios, 300-seat concert hall, 60-seat intimate performance space, fully equipped Apple Mac labs, performing arts library and over 1000 students, the Australian Institute of Music offers the complete educational experience.

Tommy is absolutely amazing. But it's more than skill - he plays from the heart. I learned a fact from PBS yesterday that Tommy is deaf! Yes, he has only 20% of his hearing - lost as a child from rheumatic fever. He has hearing aids in both ears. It brings me to tears each time I hear him, knowing what he has overcome to become the best guitarist in the world! I'm sre glad his parents wouldn't let him quit playing when he became deaf. He is truly a gift from God - the meaning of his last name: Emmanuel, Playing deaf? That's amazing grace!!

He's not deaf, thankfully but does have very poor hearing in one ear for the reasons you stated. I've met Tommy and he doesn't wear a hearing aid generally but does tend to struggle hearing people speaking at times. But when it comes to a guitar, his hearing is perfect 😊

The dude freely teaches for free. Me, I've been giving free guitar lessons for 50 years. I know why he does it. He is the runner that broke the 4 minute mile, and now he has an entire generation that can now run as fast as he does. God bless the appropriately named, Tommy Emmanuel.

ive been watching all these videos because frankly there amazing. and i was quite annoyed at the scholars and doctorates in the background because i thought they were just jelous of his talent and ignoring really the music. but even though they might be trying to act all serious up there on stage, ive seen moments where they crack. and its enevitable. you cant hold that sort of emotion in when your close to such talent.

If a Jazz muso, for example, played with as much flight of musical & improvisational imagination, you'd praised him to heaven no doubt. Here's Tommy doing his thing on an acoustic guitar & some of you say that he "loses the beat" or "his rendition loses... a beautiful song (not) done properly" or you ask,"what is this?" It's obvious that this musical treat has fallen of some very deaf ears. I rather agree with MrAllanrh's remarks on some of your "posts." The more I see & hear Tommy play (solo or with others) the more I am persuaded that he is the GREATEST!! His harmonic palette, the musical "surprises" & turns in his interpretations, his technique .. Wow. He is unequaled. Like ExPatCA & jfmm99, I feel like throwing it (guitar playing) in every time I watch & hear Tommy play. I'll never get to be even 10% as good. Perhaps if I was 40 years younger with nimble, malleable & "teachable" fingers, I might be inspired to try & learn to play like him. As it is, I'll just sit back & enjoy hearing him play. PS: That he should be playing at a AIM graduation is beautifully apt because Tommy's generosity in sharing & teaching is well known.
