The audience there seems so much more mature and respectful of the performer than they do in the United States. It must be quite rewarding to play for an audience like that.

@@sguerilla6142 No, it's not just that; it's a real cultural difference. I notice it even more between Japan and the USA; when I see a J-Pop concert over there (for example, Perfume), the audience is rapt, but follows directions not to use cameras or dance in the aisles or whatever. In the US, forget it -- hundreds of cell phones and tablets held up to block others' view, pushing and shoving at floor level ... even politically-correct booos when they ask for boys, then girls, to cheer. It reflects our entitled youth culture, which (since that chamber of horrors called the 1960's) has spread to include the middle aged.

Late reply/agreement, but it's simple, and you probably already know this. It's not the instrument alone (sometimes not at all). Peeps like Tommy, can probably pick up a 2X4 with a length of chicken wire nailed to it and be able to make wonderful music. I'm exaggerating, but my point is, their ability to draw us in so deeply comes from years and years, and yes, even more years of practice and performing. YEARS! Tommy wasn't born with a $2000 guitar waiting for him to pick up and instantly be a virtuoso. He had to learn... Of course, Tommy was born with an unnatural amount of natural raw talent that his learning curve obviously differs from "normal" guitarist... ALTHOUGH, he does mention that he STILL has to practice these hard to play songs that HE actually wrote and/or arranged. Still practicing. And again, he's playing this song in (I think) a drop C tuning, which my acoustic won't even allow due to it's cheapness... Damn, I'm conflicted now... wait, I have a great solution to my dilemma... (clicks replay button...) Yup, simply breathtakingly inspirational!

I love that comment: "One day you pick it up and you're a MASTER ... the next day you pick it up and you're a fool!" Boy, that's the truth. Been at it 57+ years, and most days, it just spanks me, and that really hurts my feelings. But occasionally, it just pours out of me like rain down a gutter, and gracious, that feels good. At 72, I am constantly fighting ill health, and that is a bummer. Had no idea Mr. Tommy was so humble and down-to-earth and appreciative of his audience. I sincerely hope that "Amazing Grace" has spiritual meaning to him ...

Putting in the hours is only part of it. There is an underlying gift from God in all of us waiting to be cultivated- the real joy is when you discover what it is. Work is a blessing not a curse, so working on your craft is not you "doing it all" but fulfilling a blessing in your life and honing a gift that you have been given. It is like a rough diamond. It has to be ground and shaped and polished very exactingly to be worth anything, but if you did not have the diamond to begin with...

This man is just amazing! I love how versatile his chordal movements are. I love his style and his beautiful inventiveness. I must get his music for my own here at home.

flintman No, it's not. Saying it's a blessing completely cheapens it... like it's a gift. It's not. It's hard work. Years and years of hard work. Nothing more, nothing less. He wasn't born with the ability to play... that's like if I said to you, "It's a blessing that you can write English." No. It's not a blessing. It's because in school you spent years learning how to write properly.

I'm guessing he worked on it everyday. Its something anybody can achieve but few do because of the effort and dedication involved

I love how the crowd really appreciates what he's doing. I watched a show in Townsville circa 2006, maybe a bit earlier. No joke, 3 times during the show people took calls on their phones. 2 of them were from the same person, and one was during "The Robin". When the song was done I'm pretty sure it was one of Tommy's relations who got up and asked the man to leave. It was the first and last time I felt truly embarrassed about my hometown.

Never heard tommy Emmanuel before and about 5 years ago I found him on you tube and he became my guitar hero . I know I’ll never be anywhere as close as good as he is but he inspires me to be a better musician and a better human being more humble and full of love to the world .

He sounds like he doesn't even have to try, and he just wills the guitar to play what he wants. It's great to hear him talk about how hard he works to do that.

Just discovered Tommy today. Unbelievable player. I have only seen 2 videos of him playing and I'm already blown away. I can't think of enough words, this guy is phenomenal. He also seems like a really humble and nice person despite being a tremendous guitar player. People like him restore my faith in humanity. Haha

It is very very true. An individual must have that desire to play at that moment to play. The passion in playing the guitar is so amazing.
