I feel like this video perfectly encapsulates Tommy’s greatness. It encompasses almost all of his techniques, from his lightning-fast arpeggios, to his unique showmanship, to him turning the guitar into a damn drum set. This is what I show people when they’ve never heard Tommy.
@gertnood4 жыл бұрын
He can do it all from A to Z, whatever he happens to feel like doing at the time. He's as sensitive at crafting a ballad as he is a wizard at the fireworks stuff. Gong to see him again in three weeks, can hardly wait! The man owns the instrument and completely fills the stage.
@cocolossal693 жыл бұрын
You're right, I showed this clip to a friend who didn't know he sang, and though she knew of his guitarist reputation, had never seen him play... she just kept looking over at me in total shock ... and just burst out laughing when he did the bass and drum bit. It was very satisfying 💜

At the time this performance took place, I had been doing some IT-related work for Tommy's then-manager for a number of years. During that time, I attended many performances, and became friends with both of them. This performance was from a PBS-sponsored event that actually spanned two nights. The resulting DVD has become quite a collector's item. My cat destroyed my only copy, but I'll leave the ugly details out. Anyway, I was there, and so was my Maton 808TE guitar. In fact - it's the guitar on the stand directly in front of Tommy's amp. It remained on that stand for both nights (it was not played during the concert). I left it in the green room before the first show and momentarily panicked when I went to retrieve it and it went missing. Thankfully, someone let me know PBS borrowed it to use as a stage prop because they didn't like the way the amp appeared on camera. They asked me if I would rather they didn't use it, to which I replied "Please do not move it from that stage, thank you!" As I hold it today, Tommy's autograph above the neck has started to fade from wear, a sign of many hours of joy and perhaps a few moments of frustration in pursuit of joy. Watching this clip reminded me of the wonderful time we had in San Diego. What a great city! Got to see the zoo, the bay, and a few nightspots as well. The recently restored Balboa Theater is a work of art.

First saw Tommy about 20 years ago at a NAMM convention concert at the Wild Horse in Nashville. He was in town to cut his first recording there. Amidst well-known artists including one of the last appearances by Carl Perkins, Tommy came out as an unknown with just a guitar and a stool and brought the house down!

"more or less" "better or worse" is the virus spreading through the online community of music. people probably never to rarely saw live shows. it's probably due to american idol and others, but also due to our school system, business world, video games, sport leagues... there are winners and loosers everywhere and society is trying to reflect it onto Art. IT IS NOT A CONTEST AND YOU ARGUABLY CANNOT COMPARE THE ARTISTS.. i also feel like bringing up Hendrix and SRV under every video is some how cool these years. last is like comparing Einstein and Tesla to steve jobs and bill gates. thougts?
