The story behind the song is well known, it was written by Py Bäckman (hear, hear Niclas Lindqvist) and was intended to be sung by Jan Malmsjö.

Py who wrote the song says without hesitation that the song is about heaven. - It was written during a period when I had lost many loved ones who had passed away for various reasons. And I think you process that when you have been through it. The song basically contains a longing to be able to see them again someday.

The song is not about Stockholm (rather it is more abstract, more like a city in the sense of somewhere you go when you die ) but I know for a fact that football (soccer) fans from stockholm use to sing this in the bus on an away day when they come home to the city late at night/in the evening)

The song was written for Jan Malmsjö, but he turned it down because the "Melodifestivalen" clashed with his bar show at the Hamburger Börs in Stockholm, from which he could not get time off. However, Tommy Körberg was free as he had been rejected by the American actors union to sing the lead role in Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Tim Rice's musical Chess on Broadway. Körberg listened to the melody a few times in a car stereo and then decided to perform.
