Anyone who's grown up in a dysfunctional home, knowing that things should be different or learning later that they should have been, can recognize this family dynamic for what it is. But there are plenty of people out there who grew up in bad homes who still have a need to protect parents who've been negligent or worse, and protect themselves from feeling the anger that comes with that awareness. Just my experience. YMMV.

@EBTcraft15 that is exaclty what i was thinking.. his video was really underlying him feeling hurt. And his emotional health is not for the daughter to be caring for. He needs to find an adult to give him that kind of support. So he can give the daughter and his other children the emotional support they need to grow into emotionally healthy adults.

If you watch the original video, she had already been grounded for 3 months for trashing her parents on Facebook. Sometimes a parent has to get really drastic to make a point. Children who don't earn what they have, don't appreciate their "possessions". Now she needs to get out their and prove to her parents that she really "deserves" the nicer things in life. All 4 of my children started working for the "extras" they wanted at age 14, and turned out to be wonderful, caring adults.

the people saying that this is an appropriate punishment is appalling to me. Actually, it scares me. It scares me that parents out there think that something this drastic and this violent is an appropriate reaction. Whatever happened to sitting down with your kids and talking with them about it? Communication is key in parenting, and when you do things like this, that's what is going to ruin your relationship with your child. It's shameful that people agree with this act. Absolutely shameful.

ABSOLUTELY agree with the actions of this VERY frustrated father! "Kids these days" do not have a CLUE what it is to have to WORK to get what you have. They seem to have (in my opinion) an "ENTITLED" attitude about things. My goodness, I worked EVERY Summer day picking tobacco leaves and / or working on odd jobs on different farms in Jacksonville, NC to pay for my school clothes and other expenses! Welcome to LIFE and RESPONSIBILITY!

For all the "really great" parents out there judging his actions as too harsh, it's called "being consistent". He warned her if she did it again he'd shoot her computer. Way too many parents give their kids warnings, and don't follow through. I think it's brilliant, and now she knows (if she didn't already) that when he says something, he means it. People are worried about what prospective employers will find on facebook, now they should be worried about what their parents will find.

@masterblastertkd Watch it again. He did not tell her he would shoot the laptop. He simply told her that if she did it again, it would be much worse than being grounded for three months. Even so, if he had said "I told my daughter that if she gave me lip one more time I would beat her within in inch of her life," would you recommend that the next time she gave him lip, he should carry out that threat in the name of consistency?

Privately rebuke children. Wise parents speak gently when rebuking. Rebuke for the child's benefit, not to humilate or for revenge. Express high regard for child when rebuking him/her.If too upset to be calm, count to ten/ leave the room/wait until later on.When ready, go to a private place/be at eye level& look directly, gently put hand on shoulder& describe unacceptable behavior, tell how it feels, say"this doesn't become you",tell consequences, resist arguing, offer amends& a loving touch or hug.

except that unless she is 18 or emancipated, she owns nothing. all her possessions belong to her guardians. she owns nothing, everything she has even her clothes are her parents. if she gets a job and makes some money, her parents have the right to take all her money from her, because they own it. if she gets a gift, its not really hers, her parents own it.

I am a member of the NRA, am licensed to carry a handgun, and the father of a son who is now 27 years old. Having said all that, this video disturbed me greatly. A video of Mr. Jordan donating his daughter's laptop to a school or some other kid in need would have been a far better lesson. Just a video of him putting the laptop in a safe deposit box at an undisclosed bank with the warning that it will stay there until he sees a change in her behavior would have been far more effective.

There is a bit of a disconnect here, the kid says she is a full time slave and he says it would take 15 minutes a day for her to do her chores. I don't believe either of them but there are better ways for a parent and adult to handle this. Shooting a laptop and posting it on youtube is idiotic. My wife and I had trouble getting our kids to chip in around the house but firm consistent pressure, respect, and withholding privileges when necessary usually worked.

To all of you who are blaming this father for the daughter's spoiled behavior: you don't really know why she's acting like that. It's not always the parents' fault. There are good parents with bad kids and bad parents with good kids. Overall, I think lazy and/or "friendship" parenting is a serious issue that leads to little brats like this girl. But it appears that this father has had prior issues with the attitude of his daughter. She didn't learn the lesson the first time. Maybe this time.

The Dad starts by saying he just spent time and money fixing the laptop and then he destroys it ? Not to bright. And from the voilent way the Father reacted, I can see where the Daughter got her way of expessing herself in her letter. Im sure the Daughter is just repeating things she hears in her home. This child should have a few chores, they teach responsibility. But she is 15, she has a job, it is called SCHOOL. right now her education is the most important thing.

It's true that the girl did vent out about her parents on FB, which is quite disrespectful plus shameful as posting in FB is equivalent to telling he whole world. Still, the father is acting like a 5 year old kid. Will shooting the laptop force her to respect you? It will only make matters worse, since you responded her action with violence.

All of us who are parents understand how rude kids can be. However he takes it to an explosive and dangerous level by his reaction. This is not to the way to teach a kid how to deal with life or the things she disagrees with: The Dad didn’t like the daughter’s behavior so he got a gun?? And worst of all, anytime you bring a gun into the equation you bring an element of uncertainty. This was very foolish and helps us understand perhaps where the daughter gets it from.

What the Dad did was a very impulsive act that will solve nothing of what seems to be going on in that household. Soon Hannah will be legally old enough to live wherever she wants. I hope the Dad is not just using her as a Babysitter and a Cleaning Lady, because she will not socially grow the right way at 16, the most important year for a girl/ woman. He should fix his other "women" problems that he has, and love his child!

I can't believe that the majority of the crying comments are about a replaceable laptop. It was his to do as he pleased with it (as he most likely bought it). It is subjective to think that any other treatment would have been "more effective." How could people have missed the far greater sin of disrespecting parents? I cant believe people are more obsessed with his (relatively controlled) actions than her despicable ones?

@raburb77 how do u know that? if there was something on her wall that was like what the guy says.. how are we to not know that it was done by someone else that had access to her computer? And now.. consider this.. if she has anyone that wants to harm her, they just need to post something that they know would offend the father..like a prankster or bully would. The father has opened up a pandora's box for that child for more harm. He is unfit to raise children. and give the guns to the police.

And as for the ownership of the laptop, which alot of people comment about, it may technically belong to the daughter. Gifting in the united states is an actual transfer of ownership of the gifted item. On paper, it might be that he shot her property. I know everyone is saying that it is his and all, but the US legal system doesn't run like that. It is about the technicalities.

@jimbalaya007 You have it ass backwards. Just because rebellion in teenagers IS "normal" doesn't mean that I "accept" bad behavior.Thing is, kids learn far more from what we actually DO than by what we TELL them to do. So, if next time Hannah gets frustrated at Dad and takes his .45 and pumps a clip of ammo into his flat screen, would you say that she "was not out of control at all"? After all, she would only be following Dad's own example for how to deal with frustration.

@martinhgreen No, i don't think he should beat her, but she wasn't exactly harmed in the making of his video. Actually, in behavior management theory, it is more important to be consistent than to be right, so... If i'm not mistaken, he did tell her he'd put a bullet in her laptop, but not in this shortened news clip, the full version of his video. People who tend to follow through with the consequences they offer, also tend to be more careful what they say. just sayin.

@martinhgreen Give me a break. He was not out of control at all. It was a lesson to his daughter. He didn't harm or threaten to harm his daughter. You're part of the reason our nation makes laws based on trivial matters. And why do we accept that kind of rebellion as normal teenage behavior. Because you accept it is why you think it's normal. That dad didn't think it was acceptable behavior and neither do I.

@upcycle He seems to have anger management problems and he certainly has control issues. He forces to get a job she doesn't want, he controls her facebook.... Plus i don't get this "parents are awesome and without a fault". Just because you have a child it doesn't mean you're perfect or a a good parent. I'm not saying that there aren't problem kids who need to be put in line, but maybe your child is telling you that you also are a problem in this relationship.

This Father has issues. He has a big ego. He wants the whole world to think he is smart, he is an idiot. I feel so bad for these 15 years old. 15 years old doesn’t have to work, you cannot afford having children, don’t have any. She is a child, she is a girl and you need to treat her that way. What kind of father are you. Your actions are evil & you should apologies to her the same way you tried to embarrass her. You need to know how to love her instead of loving yourself.

I don't see what lesson he could have possibly hoped to impart. What I see is two things: (a) that was her laptop and he willfully destroyed someone else's property, which is bad, m'kay. Or (b) he purchased the laptop originally. In that instance, the consequences to her are what exactly? The first proposition is troubling. The second suggests he's just trying to get public attention like any other person on KZbin. He's really no different than anyone else here really.

Also, Mr. Jordan's so public irresponsible use of his handgun has both trivialized the use of firearms and has given every gun control nut in the United States just that much more ammunition in their efforts to deprive the rest of us of our 2nd Amendment rights. Mr. Jordan's lack of self-control evident in this video over normal teenage behavior makes me worry if he could ever become so angry as to aim his gun at a living target. Josh Powell proves that such concerns are not unreasonable.

It should have been called : ACCOUNTABILITY : LESSON 1 I find it too funny that this girl made an angry-rant letter to her parents, and then posted it somewhere she thought her parents would never see.
