Right? so true. @BillMaher - I like you but you need a scolding on this note...for someone to give you something & say they worked on it for 2 yrs! - & you totally ignored that & gave no recognition to Tommy. Not a gracious response at all. The tree was Tommy's & he probably never intended to give it to anyone but he chose to give it to you. Tommy prob thought, what can I give Bill as a thoughtful gesture of friendship? Certainly, nothing store-bought...I'll give him something that is special to me, something I shaped, tended, & took care of. This was a truly thoughtful gift, Bill! You're lucky to have received it. Once I interview Tommy Lee at the El Rey theater on the methods of mayhem tour, and some gorilla security guard, took away my micro cassette recorder. Tommy Lee saw him doing this when I was there to interview Tommy Lee, and he abruptly told the guy leave him alone and let him keep his micro cassette recorder. That was the most classic shit ever that guy got put in his place like he wouldn’t believe God bless America. God bless Tommy Lee.

I remember talking about my childhood in detail, & of a specific time period. Suddenly all the memories came flooding back & made me feel the exact same way I felt back then & I realized that the smell memories came back too! I could smell the same smell I smelled back at that moment in time! It was amazing & wonderful!!

100% true with drums. School kept trying to put my youngest son on Ridilin so he'd sit still in class. I wasn't having it, I bought him a set of drums. He went to the top 10 of his class and at 28, he still plays every day.

I met him and his mates back in the early eighties. I was on leave and drinking at the whiskey a Go Go...They were just getting going and they f***ing ROCKED. I will say...he was a pretty normal young rock n roller...killing it! He may be sober, but this man is NOT unaffected by those ass kicking times. Not sure anyone is actually

I had a similar experience, was out in the parking lot of the Keystone palo alto. Just hanging out getting ready to help my friend 's band load in. We had a jug of wine, and the bassist yells "hey that's motley crue" I'd never heard of them, they weren't even playing there until the next night. When they heard their name they came over saw our wine and we sat for about 5 minutes and shared the rest with them. Totally casual, this was before they were famous, Tommy had to be 18 or 19. I was about that age and I just remember thinking how different our formative years must has been because they came off as somewhat feral and transient and alien, but this was pre fame and they were just like your typical rocker trying to make it. It's insane they don't have liver disease because they were heavy drinkers that long ago and just kept going.

Have to agree with the others. Poor guy keeps getting talked over every time he tries to add the conversation or offer his insight. He's really thoughtful and it's lost on Bill. Trying to tell him he actually worked on that tree for years...Bill has this one track mind with Tommy. Only wants to talk about the stereotypical- drugs, chicks, sex, etc. Tommy is being very gracious pretending like he's never been forced to talk about the same tired topics.

It's like that with everything in life. If you want to be great at anything, you have to have the right to genetics to start with. Of course it's hard work, passion for the craft and great mentors but without the genetics someone will never be in the top .1% of whatever they persue

Bill Maher, sometime when you have a musician on your show ask them if they are into cymatics at all. because now standard tuning is 440hz since the 1930's, before that many different tunings were used ,432hz was used a lot it gives music a different affect on us. it was more "in tune" with our body kind of a calming effect. 440hz is kind of chaotic. look into it. being in tune with the universe is a true thing. im a drummer and i looked into why a deaf guy i knew could dance in time with the music. its an interesting subject and im just curious if many other musicians ever looked into that. different hz have healing capabilities on the human body. Tommy said about drumming you have to have a feeling for music and i think cymatics are behind "feeling" the music. a lot of stuff here on youtube about it, i think you would find it interesting. if you read this, thanks for your time.

As someone who wrote professional criticism for a bit I can only speak of my own motivations, but for me it was a combination of my love for music/film/literature (I wrote criticism for all three), my love for writing, and the fact that I felt I was good at it. The stereotype of critics who love to appear cool and clever by shitting on art certainly happens, but personally I never took pleasure in writing bad reviews, and more often than not I found myself being reflective about why I didn't like something rather than just finding as many clever ways as I could of saying how bad it was. The whys of how we react to art as we do has always fascinated me and it's still a subject that's very unexplored scientifically and (IMO) poorly explored philosophically.
