I think the aquarium lacked a story, a narrative. It was chasing a competition tick list and the result was lots of individual components instead of an emotional connection for the viewer. Great aquascapes tell a story of how the landscape came to be through the passage of time, carved by nature rather than by human hand. Just my thoughts.

Thank you, Tommy, for your willingness to share authentically about something that didn't go as well as you hoped and that could obviously make you feel vulnerable. In this, you've taken the opportunity to be a better teacher and to grow both professionally and as an artist. Here are my thoughts: The tank doesn't have a strong theme as I can't tell if this is a forest,mountain range or something else. The perspective is bit flat and two-dimensional with no clear end point.
@888fluffy
@888fluffy Жыл бұрын
Why does a tank need a theme? Like, themed rooms in interior design are considered childish, gimmicky. Like, when I see a tank that looks like a underwater forest or mountain top it just reminds me that this is fake. Underwater landscapes don't look like that. Not saying these tanks can't be beautiful, life's too short not to have a fun gimmick tank. But it shouldn't get you more points in a professional aquascaping contest for a gimmick tank? If anything it should be less for being cheesy.
@williamwescott4213
@williamwescott4213 Жыл бұрын
@@888fluffy Your first question is a good one. Story, narrative and theme are all metaphors, but they don't need to be downgraded as gimmicks either. There should be room for all approaches that impress--no matter what happens to be behind it.

A great learning experience for you, Tommy. The finished product was very nice. The winning works this year were really good; I was blown away by the creativity and the skill involved. Create aquascapes that move you and speak to you and it will translate I think. Even if it does not win first prize, at least you can be proud that you created something from the heart. Take care.

It's hard to deny that having our art works noticed and lauded by others is a part of the artist's experience. A unique idea is always the best direction to move towards. Otherwise, to follow what gets recognized will only produce works that are mimics and in the end weaken artistic vision. The contest has rules and full of expectations. It's tricky as a person wants to be appreciated by their peers but shouldn't be at the mercy of their opinion. Winning then really isn't as important never losing your vision and authority over your own thoughts.

In looking at what you submitted, I actually think this scape dominates if it had time to mature before the final shot. I think you landed on a winner, but it needed another month to grow in. I bet there was a lot of frustration amongst scapers this year with the judges being cycled and judging philosophies turned upside-down. You'll be top 100 again next year

There are some really good lessons to be learnt from this, particularly the practical side of adjusting a layout and prepararing and creating the final image. Unfortunately I thought that the layout was a bit crowded and lacking in theme. Telling a story has become quite an important part of the contest and though it came to you without much thought with the other layouts (clearly mountainous iwagumis), it was less easy to find a coherent theme with this layout.

Hi Tommy, thanks for your generosity to share this. To me, what I perceive is is on the weak side is the feeling of disjointedness. The Amelia stones in particular, I feel that they need to be more cohesive in the way theyre put together?. I feel that they come across as just stone pieces lumped together without unity and the color also gets some of them to disappear with the white back panel. The wood pieces feel a bit thesame, with the varying color of the different pieces of wood also conveying a feeling of unconnectedness. Then between the wood and the stones, there seem to be no 'interaction'. Sorry if my comments are a bit harsh, but it feels like there is no unifying plan to unite each subcomponent into strong elements and then this weakened the potential synergy among the individual design elements.

Interesting video - not to criticise but the original scape wasn’t a favourite of mine, it seemed a little empty in the back. I think of Green Aquas own tips is ‘start out with a clear vision you want to achieve’ and perhaps you couldn’t do that working from an already part set up scape. The removable corner pieces is a very good idea. There’s nothing wrong with Tommy doing contest iwagumi and experimenting the rest of the time - you only get better by doing it. I’d like to see a dragon stone cavern or arches next please.

Tommy this is a stunning scape, I think the main problem was that you did not have a clear narrative from the start. The scape evolved and was more trial and error to achieve the final design, although looking amazing I expect the judges could perhaps sense this, if the new plants had longer to mature then I expect you would have a much better ranking. It’s still awesome and I amongst others really look forward to seeing it mature.

To be honest i am not surprised by the Placing, it looks very over done. What i mean by that is that the adding of new stuff ruined the scape very much. As you added the stones i think was the point where the look went down. A littel bit more simple would be nicer, or at least that what i think

This tank is actually so cool. I think it might be a little too “natural” for IAPLC. I genuinely felt like the final photo looked like we are inside a giant tree trunk that fell in a lake and started rotting and was left in pieces on the bottom just barely holding its frame. Letting in daylight from the opening of the tank which would be the giant gap left on the tree by rot. As water flowed, smaller branches and other wood got stuck in the rotting trunk as it was a barrier stuck on the rocks of the lake/river forever until it rot completely. As you said Tommy, if you enjoy it, thats what matters. I didn’t like that IAPLC top100 mostly looks like aquascapes that are meant to be abstract and unnatural art instead of a mixture of nature and art/creativity.

The middle big wood pieces looked like you just put them there. Their sizes , if they were suppose to act like root like structures coming from the bigger tree structures from left to right is unproportionate. Both wood pieces in the center starts at some rock and doesn’t even connect to the trees so it gives that disconnected wood pieces that has been dropped there. The size makes everything else looks smaller so it doesnt give a very small person in a big forest feeling. It looks like you took a bunch of wood pieces and just put them as they fit and not really thought it out. The left side of the tank looked great but then the right side looks identical and in nature this violates wabi sabi or natural chaos. Your pathway is covered by those ugly too big of a wood pieces and doesnt take the viewer to the end destination. There is a piece of pillow moss on the top right side. That it looks like it hasnt grown in the wood and was just put there recently. If you will have mosses on branches , they will have to have been mostly covering all of the branches or many small and thicker patches depending on the lighting direction of the simulated sun. The grass on the top left and right are too identical and unnatural. Roots are curvy and looking for pathways while slithering around rocks. The right side tree had a very straight root “unnatural”. Top left top middle branch is thicker and had an unnatural broken off end. Basically everything was unnatural and it doesnt show a forest scape, valley scape or anything. The proportions and broken pieces all look unnatural. Does not simulate actual nature unfortunately.

I feel like yours should be too 100 again. For me, aquascaping is there to recreate nature in a captive habitat. I saw a lot of “far fetched” ideas that were in the top 100. That were more crazy than naturalistic. It’s sad to see it going that way. While I’m not trash talking the scrapers or their tanks as they were beautiful. I feel there needs to be more “naturalism” brought into some. Tommy, your tank is stunning as always. Don’t be to down about it.

Hey Thomas, instead of the Iwagumi layout maybe you can try a new Hungarian type of Ragogumi layout. lol. BTW when I had a big piece of wood and wanted to use it like in the video to put plants on it I just had my drill and drilled holes in it about 2-3 centimeters deep and I pushed the plants in them. It worked especially to those bug plants like the Anubis and Java moss species etc. You know what? I think it is like a woman. I mean is there such a thing as an ugly woman? Everybody has his or her match. So like yourself. you like the Ivagumi layouts other people like the Dutch style the others only rock. You see. So you are right if it makes you happy that's all it matters. If you have others who like and shares your idea or views like Balazs and others who copy the Japanese master Amano's work and his ideas and take them to the world then that is it. I like varieties I like what you made I like Dutch style too and even just the rock where only African cichlids you can keep. I mean Gobby Hilda was one the most ugliest woman alive well before you were born trust me. Well, Kathy Bates or Rosanne Barr is uglier but the point is there was somebody who liked and even loved them. I'm sure many people can even come close to what you did even if it was 161st place. It made you happy cause it was coming from your vision your idea your own hands work and the end result is amazing. Yeah, every year like the furniture or hairstyle cars etc changing. So bald been since the dawn of time some likes it some don't. The beauty is the building part and when you walk into the shop you take a glimpse thinking ... hey I built that one. You are one effectionet guy with a beautiful baby so you are a creator and I'm sure Balazs see that in you also. Like me, I'm sure many people love what you created. Nuff said! Just enjoy it! PS: All creators or makers designers architect to stay on top made some changes and maybe if you can do to not a lot just a little then you'll stay on top and not only known for the Ragogumi I mean Iwagumi style but a new and improved or individual style like Tommy's style. lol. Can't hurt.

The tank has too much going on, the wood and the stone are competing against each other for attention instead of working in harmony. When you look at nature aquarium, you want to feel free, relaxation, harmony, you want to be drawn and connected to nature. This tank lack a lot of things. Seem to me like there's just a big pile of rock in the back ground thats obviously place there, and the driftwood in the front look like it doesn't belong there or it take away too much from the overall tank maybe if you added more plant to blend in the wood and the rock, to mellow it down and change the background colors to blue it and added more light above the center in the front it might look better. The tank would've been better if divided into 3 section, the left, middle, and right, the middle could've used more work. But with the current overall, the left side is too strong. It would work good if it was drawing you somewhere but since the tank fail to direct your attention, instead the tank is chaotic, the impression the left side give out is not good.

Not sure what you meant by "It wasn't worth it". Its a nice looking aquascape. It has many nice elements. But all the elements did not come together to create the combined "WOW" effect. I am not even considering the fact, that you went in to this competition with an advantage that is the combined might of "Green Aqua". You had access to unlimited hardscape material, limitless plants, the best tools of the trade. You had a team of aquarists to critique your work as you tweaked things. Yet....you came up with mediocre at best scape. But, somehow insinuate, that IAPLC judges has given lower rank than you deserved!

This one looks some how lacking of plants and there is no focus points, no story in it

It's a nice tank but I agree. Plus I think the background was a bit too over exposed it kinda took away from the entire image.
