I was a US Army soldier stationed close to the Seoul Olympic Stadium - I was at the Olympic Games the day Brahim Boutayeb won and he was amazing! It was the last race of the day and saw him break Lasse Viren’s Olympic 10000m record from 1972. I will never forget that day!

I am 56 and last week trying to emulate Brahim Boutayeb style I nearly beat the 20 minutes for the5 ks, I used to do it ( on a recreative basis) running under 20 minutes for the 5ks. Nowadays I am just trying to remain in the game. What an inspiration Brahim! I saw this race live, and never forgot it

I remember this race well. What’s really interesting is that today it’s unlikely 1-2 people would run away with the race as often happened back then - in 1987 Paul Kipkoech ran away with it, then in 1991 Richard Chelimo and Moses Tanui, and in 1992 Chelimo and Khalid Skah. These days even when they’re running sub-27, you’ll have a half-dozen people still there with a lap to go.

1988 was a great year for African runners. The Kenyans won the 800, 1,500 and 5000 meters and a Moroccan won the 10,000. The only distance race they didn't win was the Marathon, which was won by Italian Gilendo Bordin but Africans took the silver and bronze medals.

Totally agree with you. He trained with and was coached by said aouita at the time as well. Got Saud's documentary filmed in the lead up to the 1988 Olympics. Was a good documentary.

J'étais le coach de Brahim BOUTAIEB et son lieu d'entraînement se situait à Sienne en Italie. Il ne faut pas le confondre avec Hammou BOUTAYEB qui n'a aucun lien familial avec Brahim. Sa carrière a été brève car je pense qu'il n'était pas préparé à être une star et une vedette médiatique. Après son titre, sa gestion est devenue difficile car il avait perdu le goût de l'effort pour rester au niveau et aller encore plus loin. Il en avait les capacités mais ni le comportement ni les exigences nécessaires n'ont pas suivi. Dommage.

Boutaib is such a mystery. Why did he not go on to even bigger and better things? Why did he not continue to compete at 10,000 metres? Most of the Moroccans came on after the potential arrival of EPO in the mid '90's. Unless he wasn't really 21 years old as mentioned in Seoul, and was actually older, then his career just doesn't make a lot of sense (a little bit like Kirui).

Rather, they came after Aouita, it took ten years to « emulate » new champions … but Khalid Skah was winning before EPO, in 1994, they won Ekiden … El Guerrouj was already in the podium of 5000m juniors behind Gebreselassie, the EPO seems to arrives in 1994-1995 in Athletics, of course all Moroccans took EPO as others athletes … The most surprising fact is that he ran alone without rabbits and nearly broke the WR in Olympic Games …
