Since it's becoming a common excuse, no I did NOT pick bad photos for the 90's guys. These were some of the best individual _contest_ photos available. Generally the most impressive pics you're all used to seeing are from photoshoots, which aren't an accurate indicator of what they really looked like on stage. Be my guest try and find better. I could've made them look a whole lot worse very easily trust me.

Even if you can come up with 6 guys who could beat Curry, he'd have a good chance of placing very well at almost any given Olympia.

@@darndoor3065 exactly. Yates must've drawn up some fictional lineup featuring all his 90s buddies in their best respective shapes. Flex and Nasser were off more often than they were on. Cormier and Priest only came along in the latter half (and Curry would beat both of them except maybe Cormier in 99). Dillet was a joke with his sloppy-ass posing. Dorian's statement in a Dave Palumbo interview (something like this, if I remember correctly) : Phil wouldn't beat him, Kevin, Shawn or Flex. I find it laughable, because only person who would give Phil a run for his money is '98 and '99 Ronnie. Sure, Shawn Ray has a better overall body, but in a bodybuilding contest.... not even close.
@Tomn8er
@Tomn8er 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah Dorian's said some questionable things at times. He's blunt and level-headed which I like but also pretty full of himself in a subtle low-key way. For instance, he talks sh*t about his competitors constantly and only buoys them up when it makes _him_ look better (i.e. by comparing to other eras, which would seem to suggest that Yates views himself as just head-and-shoulders above everyone else since the greats from other eras couldn't even hope to hang with the people he was consistently defeating)

100% agree. I’ve met Dorian once or twice, I live in his hometown & ive trained at temple gym a fair amount. He’s a cool guy in person, but he comes across subtly very arrogant when talking about his success in interviews. Points like Shawn never came close to beating him, or Phil wouldn’t beat the big three. I think both are unfounded. If bodybuilding focused more on asthetics & presentation & completeness like in my opinion it should, he wouldn’t beat Shawn, likewise Phil’s a lot closer to beating Dorian in Dorian’s strongest poses, than Dorian is to beating Phil in Phil’s strongest. Couldn’t agree more with your point.
@marijancorluka4500
@marijancorluka4500 4 жыл бұрын
@TheLusianPopa Well, I'm not going to rewatch that interview, I'm pretty sure he said Shawn also. Kevin and Flex would get smoked in the mandatories, maybe not Kevin so much but Flex yes. We all know how shows are won at the end of the day and those 2 objectively wouldn't stand a chance. Also, Dorian would lose in the 7 mandatory poses, or at least should lose (let's put it that way). Phil might stand less chances against Dorian back then though, but put Dorian all those guys in today's era and they might have some serious problems with Phil (they would smoke most of the other guys though).

Health's only issue is that he is pinched. He is fairly narrow across his clavicle. He has incredible shoulders..but they are rather close together. But as far as development goes, he is at the top of the heap. Other than being narrow and having the issue controlling his midsection, Heath is on another level.

Regarding 90s (and earlier) conditioning, people need to remember that striated glutes were not a thing. It wasn't a _bug_ to not have striated glutes, it was a _feature_ . I'm sure there have been advancements in conditioning, but I believe much of the change has been dialing in the right combination of "supplements". Gaspari did it and then other people started doing it. However, when Gaspari first did it, a lot of people did not see it as a good thing. Sure it looked freaky, but a lot of bodybuilding fans aren't into freaky. They are into aesthetics and a classic look. Getting your bodyfat to nothing and draining every spare microliter of water out of your body is not part of the classic look. Have you seen Greek and Roman statues with striated glutes? Me neither. Also remember that many bodybuilders knew how it could be done, but chose not to do it. Pushing the limits can be a very dangerous thing. Just ask Mohammed Benaziza, Nasser El Sonbaty, and Andreas Münzer. Oh wait, you can't. They're dead. Many 90s bodybuilders knew some of the things other guys had started doing, but they didn't want to be the guinea pigs that pushed the limits. Steve Brisbois was with Mohammed when he died. Brisbois almost immediately retired from bodybuilding. It is fair to compare eras based on how they actually looked, but we also need to consider the different attitudes and "technologies" of the time.

@mikedevyatov3213
@mikedevyatov3213 5 жыл бұрын
The drugs have really not changed much since the mid 2000s and if he has better competition, maybe he’d be pushed to train harder. So I’d say he’d look just as food if not better than what he looks now if he was in that era.

The drugs where cleaner in the 90s, they didn't need as much so they didn't abuse them. The drugs these days are all rubbish compared so they are run a lot higher therefor all the nasty side effects and the completwly differently look and conditioning etc. Ask anyone who was using them then and now and they'll tell you there are not the same anymore

Love the dude or hate the dude, Phil is in my opinion the best most complete bodybuilder ever!! The only flaw that I could see at his prime was he was as wide as some, but he didn’t need to be as wide because of he cartoon 3D look!! I believe in his prime he could stand next to anyone and destroy them!! Some would say Ronnie would beat him but I would say that is subjective depending on what you like! I would have to say out of the two if I could pick either of their bodies to look like it’s easy Phil!! The only body builder I could say 95 percent of bodybuilders would want to look like and that is Flex!! But even then most if not all would prefer to look like Phil The Gift!!! And for the record if I had his build, I would be arrogant to and very confident and those that don’t like that he was like that is because they could never get to his level!!!

And bout how cocky he is. It is needed guys. In order to keep dominating. Keep winning. Champ need to have some kind of different mentality which the whole world wouldn’t like. This is the truth. Back then even the king coleman. Yates. Were cocky though. Just accept the truth. And respect these champ for their hardwork.

when a lot of people say the current lineup would not beat the best of the 90s lineup I don't really think they mean Phil Heath in that or at least I would not. Phil Heath would never beat Ronnie in his prime I don't think anybody really could. That there's a reason Phil Heath was 7 time Mr Olympia!! Just like Ronnie though wear-and-tear and the drug abuse got him over time.

Freedom five when talking about his confidence, there’s being confident and then there’s being arrogant. The only reason Phil would get so much hate from people is the way he reacts to getting negative remarks. Instead of just brushing them to the side and getting on with the task at hand, he will make small remarks to boost his arrogance. People don’t react well to that. The sign of a true champion is someone who can take criticism and turn it into something positive, not over react and go on the defensive. Don’t get me wrong, Phil is a fantastic bodybuilder and will go down as an all time great, but will he ever reach the legendary levels like Dorian, Ronnie, Flex, Shawn and Kevin?

I think you are correct with the amplification. Phil as a body builder as viewed just by a phisique is second maybe only to Big Ron, period. As for Phil as a human being, that trully is a topic on it's own. However (and this is an unpopular fact) Arnold back in his day (and even today to a certain extent) was a world class grade A asshole, many of his fellow "era mates" will say this. Same goes to his buddy Franco (R.I.P), and lets not forget Ferrigno... so being an asshole champion is nothing new, but yeah since Arnold and his mates gets a pass, Phil seems to be in the center of attention.

Phil is insanely gifted genetically. Hard to not love his physique. In his prime the only one who would beat him would be big Ron and maybe a Dorian who didn’t get destroyed by injuries.. However, what you said in the beginning of the video is true. If Phil was dropped in the 90’s with 90’s nutrition and gear, he would not have beaten a Dorian nor a Ronnie. His width would have been a big issue. I still think with his genetics he would have definitely been a top 4 kind of guy, though.
