Ending the Generation Gap

Historically, most youth have showed respect for their elders through simple gestures such as standing up when an elder enters a room or offering them a seat on public transportation. It was taken for granted as the thing to do. This tradition is less common now. While this may seem like a minor facet of the Generation Gap, it is indicative of a widening viewpoint held by differing generations.

The lack of showing respect to the elderly crept into the newer generations gradually because of neglect, norms, shame, or peer pressure. The younger do not so much see the importance of long life, experience, and wisdom the elderly possess. They're seen as burden mainly because of their physical condition. Respect is to be earned by acts in life, and most old people have gone through what the younger most likely have not. Of course this is a generalization. I hope we can see more good relationships between old and young; we can start it with ourselves.
