I grew up in Sweden and my grandparents used to be farmers. In that particular dialect in Sweden where I grew up, there is even a specific word for "cows that get happy when they get out after the winter": rätchekuta. This video shows exactly this, cows that get very happy, run and jump around when they see green grass in the first time since months. Happy cows are so nice to see! 🥰

So the cows stay in the barn during winter & fall season?
@jokervienna6433
@jokervienna6433 Жыл бұрын
@@kitcatmeeow571 from my understanding of how it used to be, the cows got into the barn in late fall and stayed there during the winter, yes. But I am not a farmer, I have only heard this from my grandparents. My guess is that it is the same today, in temperate regions and with most cow variants. Perhaps Highland cattle prefer to be outside the whole winter? As long as they have food, water and shelter, they should be ok I think.

@@jokervienna6433 well it always fascinated me (a $64K question) how whenever you watch a NatGeo program filmed in the Northern USA or Canada or Alaska or Russua during the bitter cold, the herds of buffalo, caribou, and other MAMMALS roaming these BELOW ZERO arrid lands, WHY they never turn into ICE CUBES ??? NO ONE ever explains this. They don't ALL move the the Southern half of the USA. And certainly the ones in Alaska or Russia don't. Also, there are cow ranchers that have THOUSANDS of cows, sheep etc. They don't REALLY have THAT many barns to shelter THOSE MEGA herds do they? Again, the WILD herds are never in barns why don't they freeze to death? There is no underground or cave hibernation for these kinds of mammals.

I’m a farmers daughter and this brought tears to my eyes. I was only talking to my daughter today about cows being let out in the spring and their behaviour. What are people thinking of in creating mega-farms where poor cows spend their lives producing calves and milk for profit. If we miss treat animals in this way we are not human. For goodness sake government put a stop to cruelty to animals. Making money is not a priority.

I have seen a few people asking why the cows are kept inside over winter. This is not done out of cruelty in this instance. People keep cows inside over winter for a number of reasons: It is partially to keep the cows from churning up the fields. In the winter it is cold, wet and very muddy in the UK. Cows are large animals and they can churn up the ground especially around frequently used areas like gates or food. It quickly looks like the aftermath of a festival. Their hooves sink into the wet ground and they can get stuck in boggy mud. Being stuck in freezing wet mud up to your chest is not a good way to go for any animal. Mud can also get very slippery and if an animal the size of a cow falls then it can hurt itself badly. The surface area of a cows hoof is fairly small so it is particularly susceptible to slips. Also when the churned up ground eventually dries it leaves deep holes that harden and get hidden by growing grass. Cows can break a leg in these holes. I have twisted my ankle in them on numerous occasions. Furthermore grass doesn't grow in the cold (under about 10 degrees Celsius) so removing the cows gives the field a rest and ensures that the cows have ample grass in the spring. Also some breeds of cow don't do well in cold conditions. People often choose breeds of cow that are very productive (meat or milk) but these breeds don't necessarily do well in all climates. Not everyone keeps cows inside over winter. Certain breeds like Highland cattle are a lot hardier, they are also smaller so they don't churn up the ground as much. These cows are also capable of dealing with poorer rockier ground which may drain better. They also tend to be kept in smaller herds so there are less animals churning up the ground. I don't like animals being caged in battery farm type places so I understand where the concern comes from but in this instance people aren't keeping them inside because they are cruel profit focused assh*les. In fact it would probably be a lot cheaper if they could live outside year round. That way they wouldn't have to provide shelter, clean bedding or quite so much food. The weather and temperature during the winter makes it a necessity in many areas. I don't keep cows myself but my Scottish grandad has a smallholding with some poultry, a vegetable patch, an orchard and a small flock of sheep. Some of his neighbours keep cows. I usually travel up four times a year to help with lambing, sheering and other tasks. I visit a lot as I am the oldest granddaughter and the only person in the family that knows how to sheer sheep other than my grandad plus I love it up there and it makes a great change from my desk job. I occasionally help his neighbours when I am up there as well. Because of this I am familiar with farm life but I am by no means an expert. If you are aware of other reasons behind this practice or if I have made a mistake then please leave a comment and let me know. I am always up for learning new things.

This was one of my favorite times of year, growing up on a family farm. Cows stay warm and cared for in the barn all winter but by spring time they're so happy to get back to pasture. Burp, snort, buck and fart. Even the old gals (yes good milkers live a very long time and only had to be put down due to illness and issues related to old age) would act like calves. You start out with a known reliable milker and she's bred and you have a herd of good milkers. Growing up on a family farm was ideal, even if there were sad moments. We didn't by meat. My folks bred 1 or 2 beef cattle and tried hard to keep us kids from making pets out of them, like all the other cattle but it didn't work. You'd have the odd chick born with a deformity that would only cause suffering. These things happen in nature and you realize as an adult, what a kindness it was there were people there to humanly put them down. Rather than linger, suffering. On a farm that's run by a family, usually there's life and death... fat more life though. Long good quality years where everyone's impacted once an animal reaches its natural end of life age and will suffer if you don't let them go. You take comfort that they had a long, enjoyable life. Free of struggle for food and warm. Found dairy cows so much more intelligent than beef cattle for obvious reasons. Aside from being a different breed, dairy cows live long lives, handled by people. The have relationships with their humans and even show love for their families because they are loved too. I'm sure it's much different for large production farms but yet... Dairy cattle are a valuable resource so are well cared for.

@candy person I used to work on a dairy farm. They go to slaughter when they fail to yield enough milk. At a fraction of their natural life span. Not to mention that roughly half of all the calves are male and are culled within 24 hrs of birth. If not then they are reared for beef. Did you honestly think milk cows just do that until they reach a ripe age? It's all about PROFITS.

While it's truth that tail docking is a procedure done at some dairy and beef herds, It's sanitarian "benefits" have been questioned by researchers and determined that there is not a significant difference between a tail docked cow and a normal cow, so national veterinary organizations are opposed to this practice. Up to this date, there are less and less farms that practice this procedure. Now, regarding this one, I believe those are color markers for easy cow state identification. If they were rubber band, they would be too proximal to the tail's base, wich is incorrect and actually have more sanitary risks than what it supposely helps.

Rahul Chaudhary Me eating meat doesn’t help animals but it doesn’t really hurt them either, and the reason is that there are billions of people who eat meat and the percentage of vegans is too low to impact the industry enough to save animals, so since my dietary choices don’t have a significant impact, I might as well eat meat since the animals are already dead and turned into food.

I WISH, and deeply hope to see the day that cows and bulls (and every animal) in the U.S. are treated more like the loving, breathing lovable creatures they are. They're intelligent, they form complex social groups complete with prefered "best friends", they're highly motivated (by food of course mostly) to learn and are adept at picking up on "human mechanisms"- opening gates and doors and generally surprising the shit out of you with how smart they are. Once you notice these things you'll start looking at animals differently as a whole. Especially the cows. Edit: More importantly though- the only reason U.S. citizens can go buy a gallon of milk every few days- is because cows are kept constantly pregnant and milking in U.S. factory farms and unregulated local farms alike. It's despicable at best... these cows never see their newborn calves which is usually 1- a rare 2 tops possible their whole life, the male calves are "not needed" and are a heavy profit for the sale of veal... simply because dairy farms need to keep the cows birthing... Also it's a myth, if not a red herring- that cows NEED to be milked or their teats will swell. This is true, but unnecessary when considered how they would survive in the wild. (eating plants that soothe their teats anyway, btw) Every excuse in the book has been being made for decades now- and the animal abuse has to stop now. It should have stopped far sooner.

It’s not wonderful, they’ve been locked in a shed for 6 months being milked. After about 4-5 years they’ll either stop producing milk and will be sent to slaughter or they’ll collapse of exhaustion and be sent to slaughter. A cow would normally live to 20-25 years if they’re not abused.

I'm lucky to live out in the country where my neighbours raise cattle (Black Angus, Charolais crosses and Highlands). The Scottish Highlands have access to the pasture at all times, even during the 6 months of winter with 3-4 metres of snow in the field, their long coats protect them from the -42C wind chill. Sometimes I go by in the morning and instead of going into the lean-to shelters, they will actually be sleeping under a mound of snow from the previous night's snowstorm. However, even though they do grow a shaggy coat in fall, the Angus and Charolais are kept inside usually from the end of December when the snow gets too deep and are let out in late April with the calves. The fields are vast and often the snow gets heavy and very crusty with thick overlying ice and can cut their legs (had this happened often with my horses.) Always a pleasure to see the cows with their calves running about in spring!
