For those that don't know, Tom originally asked Steve Ferrone to keep a beat going on the hi-hat just to keep him in time on the piano but Ferrone in his genius, played the hits around Tom's rhythm on the piano. There was a looseness in Tom's playing that was endearing, so he followed him. He kept time around his feel for the song, so the song had a breath to it. Steve was rushed to catch a flight back to New York while they were listening to the playback and Tom asked, ‘If you were going to play drums what would you play on there?’ Steve asked him if he wanted to do a pass and he said, "Yeah.". Steve did one take and was like, "I've really got to go, I'll fly out next week and finish it.", and Tom was like, "No, it's great." Ferrone said the next thing he knew the album came out and there was his drum track.

Tom Petty wrote tons of hits and plenty of fantastic songs such as this one, and yet he's highly underrated. This is when people wrote their own music and it had feeling and meaning, songs like this are truly works of art in every sense. I may not believe in it, but if it exists, I hope you're in a great place Tom. One of the only people whose death has made me cry.

@susanmurrell6352 жыл бұрын
Yes....me too. And I' m crying. Just saw a bit of him performing this song last nite right before I fell asleep.....and I thought I 've got to find this song and play it when I get up..... and amazingly it just came up on my phone, without even looking for it. He shared his hurt and feelings with us.... so he would help us "to wake up...and rise, and shine".....because that's what he had to do. He knew we'd have to do the same at some points in our lives. Miss him so much. My Dad went at 55 and Tom at 66....both way too young. Still loving ❤️ them though they 're gone. Sometimes we wake up and rise....but sometimes it's hard to shine.

@@susanmurrell635 So true. Every time I hear the "rise and shine" the memory of my dad's voice comes into my mind with sadness... I met Tom when he was starting out and I didn't realize he was performing at the Tomorrow Club in Youngstown. His songs are great and fun... Left us way too young..

You follow your feelings, you follow your dreams You follow the leader into the trees And what's in there waiting, neither one of us knows You gotta keep one eye open the further you go You never dreamed you'd go down on one knee, but now Who could have seen, you'd be so hard to please somehow You feel like a poor boy, a long way from home You're just a poor boy, a long way from home And it's wake up time Time to open your eyes And rise and shine You spend your life dreaming, running 'round in a trance You hang out forever and still miss the dance And if you get lucky, you might find someone To help you get over the pain that will come Yeah, you were so cool back in high school, what happened? You were so sure not to have your spirits dampened But you're just a poor boy alone in this world You're just a poor boy alone in this world And it's wake up time Time to open your eyes And rise and shine Well, if he gets lucky, a boy finds a girl To help him to shoulder the pain in this world And if you follow your feelings And you follow your dreams You might find the forest there in the trees Yeah, you'll be alright, it's just gonna take time, but now Who could have seen you'd be so hard to please somehow You're just a poor boy a long way from home You're just a poor boy a long way from home And it's wake up time Time to open up your eyes And rise and shine 'Cause it's wake up time Time to open your eyes And rise and shine

When Tom wrote this, the producer of wildflowers, Rick Rubin told him to write a song on piano like billy Joel or Elton John. He wrote a song on piano like Tom Petty. Rick later gave the same advice to Rivers Cuomo, he wrote the song Haunt you every day.
