i owned a Bambino Plus machine for about 2 years. I did an experiment on the group head temperature abut a year ago. Here is what i gathered :- 1st purge : Brew temp is abt 82-85C 2nd purge : Brew temp is abt 85-87C 3rd purge : Brew temp is about 90-92C As you can see, in order to achieve above 90C which is the most recommended brewing temp, you need to purge twice before you start brewing your coffee.

Hey Tom! That's a high quality comparison video, it's easy to see how much progress you made as a KZbinr! I really appreciate that 👍 Also, it's worth to mention that the lack of 3-way valve on Dedica has an advantage when knocking out the puck :) I do love Dedica for its small size factor, how cheap it is (also easy to find on second-hand market) and how great it can get after small modifications 👌
@TomsCoffeeCorner2 жыл бұрын
Hi Marek, nice to hear from you! Thanks for those kind words. I TOTALLY agree, the lack of a 3 way solenoid has 2 major advantages: 1) the brew group and lack of piping leading into a drip tray do not get so dirty 2) the puck knocks out supremely cleanly. I have never used a machine that knocks out as cleanly as the Dedica. Cheers! Tom

@@TomsCoffeeCorner Do you have to wait before releasing the portafilter from the grouphead? Isn't the whole point of a 3 way valve to dry the puck and remove pressure?
@TomsCoffeeCorner2 жыл бұрын
@@Yirgamalabar Yes, you have to wait 30-60 seconds to release the portafilter on the Dedica after an extraction. In my experience, the 3 way valve does not dry the puck. Hi there. I did exactly the same. I have the 685 dedica and invested on the same bottomless portafilter Tom is using with IMS basket and got a puck screen. @@kostaskostas2470would you recommend the delonghi still if its almost as close as in pricing the sage the bambino (not plus) model? I am so much in doubt, since the delonghi is €160 bucks right now for me and the sage €230. The money saved compensates with the portafilter and tools i will buy, but i’ve read that the lifespan may be very short. 3 -4 years?

@@noodledealer7447hi. I haven’t used the bambino or bambino plus. To me bambino looks overpriced for what’s on offer , ie for the price you mention I don’t think it’s worth the extra €100. My feeling is that the bambino is a bit clumsy, don’t feel really quality machine. The tray is better in the bambino and the portfolios might be better out of the box. But chance to a bottomless portafilter in the De’Longhi and you will have a quality portafilter. In my opinion Delonghi offers a great value for money, you can make good espresso with it if you invest to a good grinder and a good portafilter with an IMS basket. I wouldn’t recommend the bambino.

I recently picked up The Bambino, basic model. I found much of the negative comments to be addressed in the instructions in the mamual.. It comes with (4) portaflter inserts. The pressurized basket design is not popular with many experts. But it works so well that the !manufacturers had to add it to compete with the simplicity and satisfaction of the pod machines. The manual wand is easy to learn. I could not see spending $150 for the automatic steaming of The Bambino Plus. Some may like it. The hot water button is nice on the basic model. They are the same price on line or in a local store. They make good products and can demand a premium price. Buy once and cry once.
@TomsCoffeeCorner2 жыл бұрын
Hi there! Haha, yes reading the manual is always a good idea. About the baskets...I totally agree that having the choice between pressurized and non pressurized is a good thing. I use pressurized for example at work, with pre ground Lavazza coffee, so that I don't annoy my colleagues with a loud grinder. They are much less fussy when it comes to grind or puck prep too. Glad you are happy with your Bambino! Cheers!

I also have the regular Bambino and I actually prefer it to the Plus irrespective of price (almost $200 less than the Plus). I roast my own coffee so really never use the pressurized inserts. For people who are pulling shots with less than fresh coffee the pressurized inserts will help to make a better shot. Good to have if you need them.

Yay! I had come to the same conclusion about getting a bottomless porta filter if I do get the Breville Bambino Plus about not losing temperature to the Portafilter without having to run a dozen shots to heat it up 😄. I saw one guy actually put his portafilters in a cup of water out of a kettle straight off the boil Before he ground his beans. He'd pull it out, dry out the basket and then dose it like normal

People who want a more compact Breville espresso machine can consider the basic Bambino, which is quite a bit slimmer than the Bambino Plus. Probably the regular Bambino would be a better comparison to the Delonghi machine since it is closer in price to the Dedica. I have the regular Bambino and prefer it to the Bambino Plus because of its lower price, smaller size, and more adjustable wand. The regular Bambino lacks automatic milk frothing but that really isn't too important to me. Both the Bambino regular and the Plus produce excellent espresso with great crema. And the milk frothing is unbelievably good on either the Bambino or the Bambino Plus. I also bought a bottomless portafilter, which is a lot of fun, if a bit messier than the basic closed portafilter than comes with the machine. I highly recommend the bottomless portafilter.

Hi Jim, thanks for your thoughtful feedback! I would like to try the Bambino. I like very much how good this product line is at steaming. Does the regular Bambino have the 3 way solenoid valve? Cheers!
@MrSmoothasf Жыл бұрын
I've both, the dedica I modified...wand ect. The dedica pulls a stronger shot but that's where it ends. The bambino has a commercial basket, it heats up quicker, it hardly ever needs descaling, it will texture milk to latte art perfection without any manual intervention. Fyi from new it won't, it needs bedding in, after 20 or so coffees is where it comes alive. The only bad thing about the Bambino is you can't purge the wand, reviewers who tell you otherwise are wrong. You press the steam button to purge and then when you pull the wand out to put your milk under it will clean the wand into your milk. The work around is to remove the base tray and quickly put the jug under without moving the wand or alternatively only press the steam button on and off for 2 seconds. Neither are ideal

@Theodore Tsambas I've seen the Bambino tamper called a toy elsewhere too; can you elaborate on that? I have a Bambino machino, with that tamper. It's hard plastic, but fits well in the hand, and seems to do a decent job tamping the coffee. But I haven't ever used a regular metal tamper. Can you tell me what advantage it has? If it's worthwhile, I'll find one online.
@theodoretsambas40692 жыл бұрын
@@John-nr6gg Let's start with the truth: It gets the job done. BUT a tamper made of metal is heavier, thus makes it easier to compress the coffee without the effort needed with a plastic one. I also don't know if the plastic surface bends a little when pressing down (but really i doubt that). A big problem i have with this Sage plastic tamper is the size. It is about 2.5mm smaller than the basket itself, which makes tamping messy and non precise. I always find myself tamping 2-3 times to get the coffee leveled and not having a ring of powder around the basket.
@John-nr6gg2 жыл бұрын
@@theodoretsambas4069 Just made a coffee, to be up to date with my reply. A bit of detail. My BES450 Bambino came with four baskets - two single-walled (1 and 2 cups) and two dual-walled (1 and 2 cups). As a beginner, I've been using the dual-walled 2-cup basket. That basket inner wall is tapered, and the tamper fits snugly, no side-play, when its upper edge is flush with the top of that basket. I add enough coffee so the tamper feels some coffee resistance as it compresses. That works well. But for this coffee, I used the single-walled 2-cup basket. With empty basket, the tamper fits way down into the basket, but lifted so that its upper edge is level with basket top, then yes, there is about 2-3 mm side-play. I filled the basket with coffee, loosely, to the brim, and yes, when the tamper goes in, it makes a mess. But starting again with empty basket, filling it to brim loosely, then tapping the portafilter firmly a number of times on the bench, the coffee sinks quite a long way down into the basket. Then, tamping that down, gave me a very good result, with no creepage of coffee up the inside, or overflowing the basket. Brewed - resulting in the best cup I've had, so far. I'll be using the single-walled basket from now on, with freshly-ground coffee. I think I will still buy a metal tamper, just to know I've tried one, but it will be hard to do better than this cup I've just had.

Great comparison! I was so happy to see your video headline today; had to go straight to it. I wanted to buy the vaunted Bambino Plus machine a month ago, but none yet in the shops here, so reluctantly bought the original Bambino machine, figuring its performance outshone the Dedica, from earlier reviews. I wanted the Bambino Plus auto frothing, (I'd enjoyed that function in the Nespresso Uno - but that machine was away, getting that very frothing function repaired! - hence the need for another machine in meantime!) I figured that the standard Bambino machine, with its manual frothing function, could, wth a little practice, be made to work as well as the auto frother of the Plus, and sure enough, it does, and more. Your demonstration pretty much parallelled my own earlier experience with the Uno. It does it the way it wants, and though it made a nice enough result, your comment, about it being a little too frothy, points to a problem with too much automation. I can't be sure, but I suspect that the extra sensor involved in the Bambino Plus steam tip, to automate, may be a problem that could appear, as it did with my Uno, in suddenly stopping partway through its frothing process. (Incidentally, the very same problem has since happened with my sister's Uno machine also). So - though I wanted the Bambino Plus, I'm more than happy that its unavailability gave me the better standard Bambino, that does everything that I've ever wanted in a coffee machine. (And besides that - I feel *liberated*, now that I can make coffee through a portafilter, using my own free choice of freshly-ground coffee! Thank you for your videos - you are an excellent presenter!
@TomsCoffeeCorner2 жыл бұрын
Hi John! Thanks for sharing your experience! I figure the Bambino model will suit just fine. I never really use the auto froth feature, because I prefer frothing manually, and on the Bambino it's fun! Does the non Plus model also have a 3 way valve? How often do you have to empty the drip tray on that one? Thank you for your kind words by the way. It is appreciated! Cheers ☕️
@John-nr6gg2 жыл бұрын
@@TomsCoffeeCorner Yes, frothing on the manual Bambino is fun, and I just love seeing that shiny "thick white paint" appearance show up in the milk swirl, that promises a great creamy drink ahead. I'm unsure if it has a 3-way valve; the manual doesn't mention it, and your mention of it in your video was my first knowledge of it. But, after a coffee extraction, when the portafilter is removed, the group head doesn't drip at all, so maybe it does have that 3-way valve built in, same as the Plus. Yes, the smaller drip tray does need emptying more often than the one on my Uno machine, but for some reason I always have it in my mind to do that, and it's no chore. That bright red float stick that comes up through the drip tray is an excellent idea. Emptying the tray is a quick no-fuss procedure that comes naturally and instinctively, just before enjoying the last of my three large daily cups of must-have reviver!
@yz2492 жыл бұрын
@@TomsCoffeeCorner Yeah the other differences is that the regular bambino doesn't have a 3 way valve, the steam tip is a one hole instead of a 4hole (though you can buy the 4 hole tip if you want - though this is preference not an objective upgrade) and that the water tank is smaller because the machine itself is narrower. I actually find the lack of a 3 way solenoid to be a huge workflow benefit as you don't need to (and can't) backflush. No solenoid means no coffee is pulled through the grouphead, and that there is no valve itself to clean (and one less part to fail). The trade off is you have to wait ~5 seconds after the shot is stopped for it to finish dripping, but this isn't too much of a big deal. I removed the shower screen itself recently after about 3 months and there was pretty much no residue at all - and I just purge for about 3-5 seconds after a shot.
@TomsCoffeeCorner2 жыл бұрын
@@yz249 Totally agree with you there. Also, if there is no 3 way valve, then the pucks knock out WAY nicer too. With my GCP, Bambino, and so on, the pucks are soupy and it is always a pain to clean the basket. Thanks for your comment! Tom
@yz2492 жыл бұрын
@@TomsCoffeeCorner if you want cleaner knockouts you should try using a puckscreen if you haven't already. They're pretty cheap (I paid £5 for 2 54mm ones), there's no difference between the aliexpress ones and the expensive b-plus ones, infact I remember reading they're made in the same factory. Get the widest filtration (easier to clean and makes no difference) and thinnest you can (either 1.7mm 150 uM or 1.0mm 150 uM if you can find it) They keep the puck compacted during the brew process so the knockouts are way cleaner, and it keeps the shower screen so much cleaner as well. Depending on your setup/shower screen you may find more consistency/less chanelling in the end of the shot. The downsides are you do have to get the puckscreen out and clean it of course. If you tap the top of the portafilter the force will make it pop up slightly so you can lift it out (will be hot so be careful)

9:00 There is actually a bit more to the story that favors the dedica for me in my opinion: Sage seems to do some extra compensation for the non-heated brew-group by superheating the water during pre-infusion. That thing let's steam out during the entire pre-infusion unless I steam the milk first, let the steam wand purge and instantly pull the espresso after. The worst part of it is: The guys from Kaffeemacher:innen at Switzerland(Basel) actually measured the brew temperature and measured a full 100°C during pre-infusion, that crashes down to 80°C during infusion, heating up over time to up to 97°C at normal extraction. Temperature control is terrible at the Bambino likely due to the Thermojet that they use (seems to be a mesh of copper that heats up the water rather than a block or a coil). They are incredibly energy efficient tho, compared Ascaso Dream for example it only consumes 1/5th of the power of the Ascaso one and the heat-up time is 5 seconds. (yes startup is 3 seconds but the machine does only boot up then. It only seems too heat up when heat is needed.)

Are these two comparable where you live in price? Where I live the Bambino is 3,5x more expensive than the Dedica, not two products that are comparable where I live with the Bambino being much more high end. The Bambino is about $300 used. I just picked up a Dedica used for $45.

It depends so much on the market. For me, the BP is 2x-3x the Dedica. Which is why I often recommend the Dedica.

Hello Tom. I hope you are doing well. I’m currently having the dedica EC680 and I’m looking to swap it for the bambino plus. I’m still not 100% if this would be an upgrade or about the same as dedica. I already upgraded the wand and I also have the bottomless portafilter. I’m mainly confused as I can see more videos on your channel using and explaining the dedica and it looks like you prefer this coffee machine over the bambino a bit more. Could you please help to decide which one to stick with? Thank you!

I feel like the Bambino is a side-step to the Dedica. It can steam better, that's for sure. But espresso is in the same ballpark. Cheers!

@@TomsCoffeeCornerthank you. I just bought the pack and test it out. To be honest it does look a bit cheaper made. It feels like the dedica is much more solid and bambino feels like more plasticky. I have both the DeLonghi Dedica Arte and the Breville Bambino Plus (the later is in my holiday house). I like them both, for different reasons. The Bambino is great for members of the family who aren't used to espresso machines, and it means they can take a bag of pre-ground with them, and simply use the machine to make a pretty good latte or espresso. The self-clean option is a winner, because someone abused the previous machine by not flushing the steamwand. Now, everyone is happy. At home, I prefer a better made coffee, and enjoy latte art, so the DeLoghi Dedica Arte is perfect and a low cost option. Having discovered Tom's Corner, I can see I have a few options available to improving my coffee ... bottomless portafilter, reducing the pressure, which I'll do for the Delonghi

Hi! You want everything in the espresso path to be heated, ideally to the same temperature. If the portafilter for example is room temperature, as soon as the hot espresso hits it, it will suddenly decrease in temperature, and lose flavor and mouth feel. At least that is how I see it. Cheers!

Hey Tom, are you sure that Bambino portafilter is made of aluminum and not steel? Btw, sorrry for the lame question - do any of these machines have any aluminum part in the processing chain, that is - if a water or coffee flows through anything of aluminum which is considered brain-toxic?

I do not know if the PF of the Bambino is aluminum. But it feels lighter than the ones from the BBE for example. The Dedica's PF IS aluminum. But, the thermoblocks of these machines are both steel lined. Is AL really toxic? The Bialetti is aluminum, as is the boiler of the GCP. Cheers!

Hi 👋🏼 could you please do some video about how many shots we can pull continuously and the intervals we should give in between? My plan is to use two Dedica Pumps as a pair for my small cafe, which might have a demand of 10-20+ shots per day. And for the milk frothing I will use a separate electric mixer type milk frothier not the one included in these machines as it might not be economical as it seems in the long run. If I could run like this for 3-6 months then it’s more than enough!
@TomsCoffeeCorner Жыл бұрын
You just have to wait 60 seconds for the Dedica between shots, so that the pressure dissipates. It is not meant for cafe use, but you might get away with 10-20 shots for 6 months.

Unfortunately try as I might I cannot get my pressures down below 10 bar and most of the single and double espresso shots are running at 11 bar regardless of grinder settings or dosing amounts. The portafilter is filled and tamped to precisely the recommended amount and most pours time out at approximately 15 seconds delivering 40ml . The pressure gauge is working fine - what is wrong???? Also on average how many kilograms of coffee does it take to be proficient with this machine as I have now used up 2 kilos experimenting? I would also like to perfect latte art but I am having no success whatsoever. Would It be better to buy a dairy farm as I am using so much milk?😂🤣 Keep posting the videos Tom there great! Your very frustrated subscriber, John 👍

Hi John, are you using fresh beans? Most people complain that they cannot get the pressure HIGH enough, but if your pressure is too high, then maybe is it a combination of fresh beans, and the basket supplied with the Arte. It is designed to help create a bit of pressure itself, through its truncated design with fewer holes. If you try an IMS basket, I think you will find the pressure will decrease due to fewer holes. Here is an example: geni.us/DeLonghi_IMS_Basket
