After watching this video last week, I went to the home improvement store and bought some washers for my '92 Lancer (same gen. as your old Turbo Mirage). Great improvement. Shifting a quite a bit louder, but it's worth it. Btw. one of my first mods on the Lancer was to swap the shift knob to the leather one, you put in as well. It's fantastic :) Keep up the great videos!

Great video, Tom! Thoroughly enjoyable as always, and I really dug the music for this one, the kind of slower, fuzzy groove during the cable change (around 4:00) and then later during the filter change. Looking forward to the next one!

Of all the DSMs I've owned, and all the horsepower aside, I swear the single best modification I ever made was installing a Symborski shifter bushing kit. If you've never replaced those crap bushings, you just can't appreciate how massive a difference it makes in how driving the car feels every day.

Excellent vid and work, as always! Question: your trick with the washers instead of the rubber mounts, is it really ok to put metal-on-metal where rubber was used? Wouldn't it become a source of corrosion in the future?
@TomsTurboGarage
@TomsTurboGarage 10 жыл бұрын
Thank you! The rubber mounts simply dampen vibration from the chassis and shifter mechanism working to help with NVH inside the cabin. With solid mounts, there is some noise but the shift feel is much more direct. All of the surfaces are coated with some sort of protection and inside the cabin, so it would take some pretty crazy conditions to create corrosion I would imagine.

Been searching google for days now......no luck. I want to install Speedhut gauges (GPS speedo, matching Tach, etc) in my daily driver and want to keep the cruise control function fully operable. Spoke with Speedhut and they confirmed they can add a signal out wire to provide speed info to other systems (once you remove the 1g speedo, the VSS Reed switch goes with it). My question is how/where do you add this input to get it to the ECU, Cruise motor, etc to keep the Cruise Control operational? Thanks in advance.

Tom's Turbo Garage I think I would have also mentioned that you must replace the copper crush washers on both sides of the fuel filter lines. They are not reusable.
@TomsTurboGarage
@TomsTurboGarage 10 жыл бұрын
I think I originally misunderstood your question. You were looking for info about maintaining your 3000GT. Just get a service manual and it will include every step. As for the crush washers, I don't intend for my videos to be step-by-step tutorials, more like a video build diary with enough detail to give you an idea of what each job entailed. These videos would be hours long if I went to that level of detail, and I would have gone insane by now. :-D

hey tom! that shifter bushing stiffness fix you did, is that an issue/fix for the miata too?
@TomsTurboGarage
@TomsTurboGarage 9 жыл бұрын
Mike Ferrante Hi Mike, it's not an issue for the Miata as it uses a shifter that mounts directly into the transmission and does not use actuator cables like the Mitsu. That said, some little items in the Miata shifter assembly can wear out over time, check the miata.net garage for more info on that. Good luck!

I have a 91 talon awd atthemoment but still need ideas on building it up ..your videos are inspiring ...me and my friends learn a lot from most of your vids (even tho they don't like DSM) they like the work and restoration you've done to the gvr4... Haha, thanks! I don't want to be a buzzkill, but I am not going to build another monster like I did with the Talon. I may have another 600+hp car someday, but when I do it's going to have high end brakes/chassis/suspension/etc. to handle it.

Thanks, you're the man. I want to try it out as my front motor mount is always getting ripped in 1 month. May I ask what is the cause? Should I change the back as well? Does it have something to do making the front ripped so easily? I've already changed 2 front motor mounts.
@TomsTurboGarage
@TomsTurboGarage 10 жыл бұрын
Ivan Rubio You're welcome Ivan! It shouldn't happen this frequently, it is possible that one or all of the other mounts are damaged too. I would start by checking them all out. Good luck!

My plan for now is to put the chopping board till I complete all four. It's very annoying that you are idling the car and you hear the squeek sound of the metal rubbing together. I got the car a year ago and it's been always this way, I had no history of the other mounts so I'm going to change them all. I've been a shade tree mechanic after a month I got the car, mechanics here are complete rip off and didn't solve problems of the car. T_T

Hi there! Yes, replacement parts are getting harder to find. You should have some luck with a good salvage yard though. They can usually source parts from other salvages. Good luck!

I'm feeling traces of engine oil on my water pipe after the heater inlet which crawls down all the way to the lower radiator hose. I can't see where it's coming from. Anybody have a clue? I'm hard pressed to see oil on the engine seals. Radiator coolant is free from oil contamination.
@TomsTurboGarage
@TomsTurboGarage 10 жыл бұрын
Hi Gino, you can use an oil dye to find the leak, as it can be very difficult in an older engine like these. It could be anything from a cam angle sensor o-ring, to valve cover gasket, to the exhaust stud that runs into an oil galley, or about a handful of other sources. Good luck!

Galants are getting harder and harder to find that is why I got a 91' talon tsi pics to follow. The Galants I did find were heavily moded or have been siting for way too long. When did you get you mechanical abilities? Nice garage oops man cave

Thanks man! That's true, they are fairly hard to find in unmolested condition. Enjoy your Talon, they are great fun too! I grew up in a service station around mechanics and learned lots from them. I also received a bit of training, but that was a looong time ago!

Hi Anthony, I had a little training here and there but most of my education came from growing up around mechanics and then later on just enjoying trying new power adding mods. You just start small and before you know it, your confident doing all sorts of stuff that seemed impossible just a few years back. Have fun wrenching!
