Looks awesome! I wish more people would take the time and fix their cars like this. It will help the resale so much! Last year I bought a near mint 91 BMW E30 318is with perfect paint for $1500 put $500 worth of new parts in it, everywhere from replacing all the bushings, inner and outer tie rods, ball joints, every gasket on the engine, and hand cleaned every part to where the engine bay looked new, and detailed the rest of the car and I sold it for $4000 on the noise. And now I miss it lol

you can do it bit by bit, doing small part jobs each spare hour you have. Eventually you will have a complete ly cleaned engine bay.

I thought I was crazy for enjoying this type of detail work. Like u said this shows the level of care for your car. Every car I have ever owned has a engine bay u could eat off of. And when it comes for sale. People always point out how clean the engine bay looks. I love how u did not just spray cleaner let it and power wash. That for me is a BIG NO NO. On new cars its of SOMETIMES. By hand with part removal like u showed is the proper way in my book. The car looks amazing . I cant wait to see more. I hope to find my project 93-94 Subaru legacy ss turbo car soon. still on the hunt for a clean 1. wish me luck

Thank you Ben! I believe it was a spot where the stock heat shield rubbed against the manifold and made it appear kinda "chalky" I remember inspecting it at the time. That said, they do crack after many years of use.

Tom, you need to invest in a quality blast cabinet bud. The best investment I ever made was in my upright blast cabinet and Qunicy 60 Gallon Two-Stage Compressor. I use the blast cabinet all the time, and find it an indispensable tool for restoration work.

What is the orange spray bottle that your are using?

It's a degreaser with orange oil in it. I got it in the auto section at walmart, I believe it is called Orange Clean or something along that line.

When detailing an engine I just use the pressure washer to mist the engine bay to carry away the lifted dirt and grime

Hi there and thank you for saying that! For engine detailing, I like to use a mild degreaser like fast orange, or the one from Zep. I also use silicone spray to clean and restore rubber parts and a low gloss detailer spray. Enjoy your e39!

I had cleaned my engine bay when the motor was out along with everything associated. A few test drives later I got oil gushing out the hotside of the turbo through a leak in the downpipe while going down the highway at 70mph. It sure did ruin nearly everything I cleaned. Now Im stuck everytime I pop my hood cleaning this and that trying to squeeze my hand under stuff.

I still can't get over the transformation. Car guys definitely have clean engine bays and.... drive around deep puddles or drive very slowly through them. There is always some clown behind me who wants to run over me to immerse his/her ignition system.

So does powder coating warp your valve covers or not? People say the heat warps them but those were posts from years ago. People's thoughts? I hate painting mine, it always chips within a year and doesn't pop as much. Plus I think grime sticks to it over time when the paint is hot while the car is running.

I would trust that a skilled powdercoater knows how to do it right. The quality of the work varies greatly depending on the skill of the coater, from what I've seen. For example, Justin (at detective coating) has coated hundreds of valve covers on both street and race cars. His work was on display at the shootout and I didn't see any leaks.

be very careful when cleaning the brake fluid cap. Make sure its completely clean and dry before you re install it. If theres water on the cap the hygroscopic brake fluid will absorb it and could ruin your whole system. Also be sure to not have the cap off for too long or it will absorb out of the air/ get contaminated

I never understood why more people don't do this to their cars as well.. Get out there and get to scrubbing. There are better cleaners such as Engine Gunk Gel and Purple power but once you show your car a little love it definitely shows it back.

This video just saved me from pressure washing my 89' GT-R R32's bay that im getting in December straight from Japan here to Texas. TBH i was kinda scared about doing that since my car is over 20 years old also, thanks man! :) Can't wait to get to it :)

Great to hear! Pressure washing is fast and works fine when done properly, but it does typically blow off the cool factory under hood stickers and can cause other problems. I like this approach as it's gentle on the setup and allows you to inspect things too. Have fun with your awesome import! :-D

Buffing bolts is great, but you can remove the zinc plating allowing the part to rust much easier. Bolts that have been under a wire wheel either need to be painted or re-zinc plated in order to maintain their shine.

Absolutely true and that's one of those things I wish I would've mentioned in the video. I only wire wheeled the battery hold downs due to the rust. For the zinc coated hardware, I usually just clean those.

I started cleaning the hood with dishwashing fluid. I couldn't get baked in oil and dirt. How do I go about that? Is the dishwashing fluid not capable enough?

Hi Gino, yeah probably not strong enough. I use a citrus based degreaser (test it out to make sure it doesn't damage the paint, etc) and then a cleaner wax.

Thank you Izzy! There are different tactics for rust repair that depend on the severity and location of the rust. Google searches will give you great examples and instruction on how to repair. It ranges from a simple anti-rust coating to cutting out and welding in new metal.
