His father ( a kidney donor ) was dying of stage 4 kidney disease. A donor could not be found. This is the first time James’s dad heard the song. After the video he asked everyone why they were crying as he was not dead yet . After this video came out a distant cousin came forward and was tested and was a match. James’ dad is still alive and as far as I know is doing well. James and his dad are both former military and emotions are not easy for either one of them but James’s emotion in this is very raw. Beautiful song and tribute to his father

His father is still allive! James’ father, Charles Blount, underwent a kidney transplant in 2020, with James happily revealing his father is now doing ‘well’ - but there was a major issue they had to tackle before the surgery took place. ‘The guy who donated the kidney, remarkably, has got the same name as my dad, Charles Blount. ‘He’s a distant cousin,’ James explained.

I have a close family member putting together a video montage for my family. This will be for my oldest son. We have been through so much together. I only have a short time but he is hurting the most. He is 25 now, a couple of weeks ago he and I were alone when he started crying. All I could do was lay his head in my lap and run my fingers through his hair until he went to sleep.

Parent/child relationships are complicated. I lost my mom to cancer, and if you switch the lyrics to mother/daughter, everything else applies. This song takes me right back to her bedside as she was dying, and I've seen this video hundreds of times, but it always makes me cry my eyes out.

That would be a big "no" from me (a woman). My Dad passed away about 8 years ago from cancer. It was pretty awful. What killed me is James basically crying through the whole, gorgeous song - so beautifully written and beautifully sung. I've been watching reactions all afternoon. LOVED seeing his Dad at the end, who I just checked - is still alive, going on 4 years on his new kidney (it wasn't cancer, it was some kind of kidney disease and he had already donated one himself!). So glad Charles is still alive and I hope he is enjoying good health. The more a person reads about James Blunt, the more you learn he is an amazing human - and his Dad must be too - rising to Colonel in the armed forces (UK, I would guess) and he (Charles) had even donated a kidney to someone. Wow. James gave all the proceeds to the song to one of his charities for veterans. Amazing family. ❤

@@i_love_rescue_animals He also donated all of the proceeds from his song "The Greatest" to Britain's National Health Service and dedicated it to the healthcare workers (although the lyrics were originally written for his children).

James and his father were both high-ranking officers in the British army, James being a Captain and his father a Colonel. So they are both very stoic, or “stiff upper lip”. This was James’ way of saying goodbye to his father and telling him how he felt before he passed away. The refrain of “I’m not your son, you’re not my father. We’re just two grown men saying goodbye” is significant because it’s what James’ father said to him (obviously reversed) before James went off to war. He served in Kosovo in the 1990s. At the time this song was written, James’ father had stage 4 kidney disease. He had previously donated a kidney, so he only had one. He was on a long transplant list and neither James nor his siblings were matches, so there wasn’t really any hope for him. When James recorded the song, it was the first time he had ever performed it. Everyone was sobbing by the end of it, except for James’ father himself. He asked why everyone was crying and joked that he wasn’t dead yet. The studio wanted to put autotune on the song to remove the voice breaks, but James refused to let them because the way it was recorded was more genuine and natural. Ironically, this song saved his father’s life. Another relative saw the video and got tested and found out they were a match. The transplant was successful and James’ father is reportedly alive and well. Another great song by James Blunt is “No Bravery”, in which he talks about his experiences in the Kosovo War.

His father is still alive. He was suffering with stage 4 acute kidney disease and at the time of this video they were searching for a doner but had not had any successful matches with close family. Hence the powerful nature of the delivery of the song. Eventually a distant family member came forward (allegedly after seeing the video but I’m not sure of the validity of that claim) and James father got the transplant he needed.

I think the beauty of this song is that it spotlights an experience damn near everyone is going to go through. Whether you're adopted, estranged, what have you there is going to be a day where you have to take care of your parent and confront the fact that your time with them has run out. Nobody escapes that and for james blunt to have his brush with it and talk so openly about how painful those moments are in his song allows more people the validation that their pain is shared and that they dont have to hold it in.

James wanted this to be 100% real and authentic. This was the first time he'd sung it to his dad, who had only recently been diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer and was not expected to survive, although they did eventually find a donor and he made it. Both James and his dad are former officers in the British military. I don't know how James managed to keep himself together so well, but it was so damn powerful and obviously deeply emotional for him.

Guys, just a little background. James and his father were both officers in the British military. This was recorded as you see it. It was the first time James had actually sung this to his dad. His recording company wanted him to use 'Auto-Tune' but he refused because he wanted it to be real and full of genuine emotions because at the time, he thought his father was about die from Stage 4 kidney cancer, so you can understand his voice wavering a little towards the end. Honestly, I have no idea how he managed to get this done, but what a wonderful job he made of it. Great reactions you guys. Same as everyone else who watches this video for the first time!

Life has a strange way no one knows what will happen tomorrow. I didn't search for this song or heard about it until now june 2022 while watching and listening inspirational song on yt. This one came out. "dame" it hit me hard. I see my pain through the eyes of james blunt. When my father died 2years ago.. I remember and regret everything i have done to him... I blame him for the death of my mother back 2002 for cervical cancer. I was 15yold. I've been through a lot of pain and we lost our father and son relationship. I remember the last two times he talked to me. 1st in 2016 while I'm detained in pulis station. He asked me "what happened to you"? I never reply.. And the 2nd in 2018 while im away from my hometown. He call me on the phone and ask me "how are you?" I replied. "I'm ok now." i forgive him. But i never ask for him to forgive me for all the pain and shame i give to our family. I didn't't have the courage to tell him. I didn't know how to start. In 2020 he died. I never get a chance to tell him i love him sorry for everything.. Now I'm crying again while typing this comment. Sorry for my grammar. Im a Filipino im not good in english. Anyway I just want to say everything i felt tonight.

Just wanted to add what many people, I see, already have. His father was in kidney failure and expected to pass until, at the last minutes, a donor, which I believe I read was a distant cousin, was found but this song was written while James Blunt was preparing himself for his father's death. That said, it is an incredible song and one of the most visibly moving songs I have ever heard, indeed experienced. Plus, in every interview I have seen James Blunt, in...the guy is just too funny. A sense of humor is always a plus.

Nice to see both you for this. Having your wife there was a nice added touch to the emotion of the song and video. If you haven't watched Lewis Capaldi, "Someone You Loved" music video, you really should. It has a very similar effect on you. Be sure to watch the version with the older man in the thumbnail (not the official music video).

James Blunt is often called the most hated man in pop. If you’re James Blunt, it’s not just useful: it’s essential. Blunt is, after all, often referred to as ‘the most hated man in pop’, even by his fellow musicians. Noel Gallagher (Oasis) joked that he had sold his home in Ibiza because Blunt had bought a house nearby, allegedly complaining that he “couldn’t stand the thought of [Blunt] writing crap tunes up the road”. Paul Weller (The Jam/ Style Council) once said that he would rather “eat his own shit” than share a stage with him, and his name has become embedded into modern rhyming dictionary slang (use your imagination). Btw. Why ?????? Don't ask me. (haters/lovers?). Tom .... you as a "Floor-lover", where are the songs from her live 2021 solo-tour? *_”Ever Dream”_* : kzbin.info/www/bejne/nHyqk3Z7n951gdU&ab_channel=FloorJansen (Nightwish-song) *_”Storm in a Glass”_* : kzbin.info/www/bejne/bZLbZqGJhadsqpo&ab_channel=FloorJansen (from her “Northward-period”) *_”Mama”_* : kzbin.info/www/bejne/e2bWoICorrt3a6M&ab_channel=FloorJansen (cover from Samantha Steenwijk (tv-show Beste Zangers 2019) Don’t forget Eng. While written with death hovering nearby.. I hear how as children our parents chase the monsters away for their kids.. ( check under the bed.. put clothes away.. take burdens away) but as we grow up and our parents need help ( not necessarily in that moment of death) it's our turn to take away their burdens, to help them and shoo away the monsters. To anyone in our life who's been there for us when growing up who's protected us.

This was an amazing video, James says everyone was in tears apart from his Dad, who turned to him and said "I'm still here son" In an interview he said that after the recording he said to his Dad that when he dies this record will take off 🙂, and if you know James that is meant in joke, and his Dad said he wanted half the profits. If you want to know about James, tag into his Instagram, he puts himself down so much, as he is one of those artists who nobody admits to liking, but has sold millions, A quick example Some guy said Oh not another album from this guy ! James replied I know but just imagine I have to sit through making the album and even I hate it 🙂The guy is a hero, not only cause he was a war hero, but he now makes such amazing songs.

I'm on about 500 times listening to this and I still break down The video was shot in 1 go, when it finished, most of the crew crew were in tears and Charles Blount (James father, Blount is James real last name) said "why's everyone crying? I'm still here" lol

James's dad had stage 4 kidney disease and would die with out a transplant (he only had 1 kidney because he had been a live donor in the past) James and his sisters weren't compatible. This song was recorded in one take and after the video everyone in the studio was crying and James' dad said ' what's all this fuss I'm not gone yet'. After the video was released a distant cousin saw it, came forward and was a match. The transplant worked and his dad is still alive. All proceeds from the song were donated to Help For Hero's a UK veterans charity as both James and his dad had been in the army.
