Whitney = strained, Celine = nasal, Mariah = too much vocal runs. Yes, strain belongs to Whitney. What is the point of talking about prime Whitney when she was not that famous (meaning she didn't have to sing as much as prime Mariah)? Whitney became super famous after that movie song, which is several years after her debut. Mariah became famous instantly after releasing her first album, which is entirely written by Mariah and gave her 4 #1. Mariah has the best debut, highest number 1, artist of the decade, biggest comeback, etc. So don't even try.

SoHyang is one of the best female singer in the world but comparisons are irrelevant. The discovery of her voice and work is a special "first time experience". Whitney, Mariah or Celine can't give that anymore. Similar to Dimash, she offers us special emotions and not just excellent musical performances. Priceless!

I Love So Hyang! She is very good and has an outstanding vocal talent, however she CANNOT compare with Whitney/Céline/Mariah ... yet. She has the necessary talent but needs to come up with her own songs and her own flair as an artist. Having mastery of your tool doesn't make you a great artisan if you have no inspiration/imagination. She has her own songs, but mostly in Korean and often with Christian content. She is a gospel singer and well known in churches. You have to understand, SoHyang is not focused on an international career. I think she doesn't really care about a career in Korea either. There is no record deal or anything like that. She is a real authentic singer and not a music worker.

Tom, I think this is the greatest performance of music ever captured by microphones and cameras. So Hyang isn't just on a different level. She _is_ that level. The first time I ever heard So Hyang sing was this performance and I knew right then and there that she was the greatest singer and performer I had ever heard. I was 61 at the time, two years ago, and then I discovered this almost endless list of her other _live_ performances, and she is without question without peer. The greatest singer of our generation. It is almost like time out of mind. She takes you on a journey and you _will_ go along for the ride--and come back for more. So Hyang _is_ a bigger than life experience and that is faint praise! 💖👌🎶🙃😎😉 PS That second vocal run she performed, just after that lady said "Wow!", is the most beautiful, feminine and womanly sound I have ever heard. More you study vocal techniques and singing in general, more you appreciate Sohyang. She is not just singing. She is “crafting” her voice her tone, volume to the song. Her placement of resonance changes constantly to magnify the effect. Most singers, even the most accomplished singers, often sing a song with the natural tone and voice that they are born with. I am not saying singing with a natural voice is inferior. I am just mesmerized by the range of techniques sohyang has in her arsenal, which is second to none, and she can craft just about every song with her technique in her toolbox and turn it into a piece of artwork. More you study the music and vocal techniques, more i discover them in her songs, and that’s when you get a goosebump and really see the “craftsmanship” she put into her songs. And i think that’s why vocal coaches react strongly to Sohyang, because they can see these things and they know how difficult it is when an average joe, like my old self, will only see the high notes she hits.

Bridge over trouble Water is by Simon & Garfunkel in 1970. Been done as a cover many times over the years, very famous song that won a Grammy award in 1971. This is Sohyang's own arrangement of it. Elvis did a really well known cover of it too. If you just put in the name of the song on Google, Sohyang and Elvis pop right up after S&G.

I am crying more for this my 40-50th listen, than I was for my first listen. She gives everything she has to her music. Watching her sing is exhausting because you actually feel her level of effort. That last little bit where she goes from whispering, 'I will lay me' then goes straight into a full on belt and then the little kick at the end was perfect. Just as He is through her.

Sohyang is one of the people who was recognized as a true singer in Korea, not a box-office singer, and there was even an anecdote that she refused to take medicine and sang the last song while battling ovarian cancer. Very glad to see you return to pay Sohyang another visit so soon - although I don't blame you. It is tempting to gush over Sohyang's singing but it's also so unnecessary once you have listened to it. It needs no explanation. I just appreciate her voice as it gives us the music for consolation and healing. Sohyang mentioned that Whitney, Mariah and Celine as the divas she admired growing up. She also warms up her voice by singing to song in Mariah Carey's Music Box album. However, I agree with you that Sohyang belongs to the same pantheon where these vocal goddesses reside. Her phenomenal vocal achievement has earned her the pass for the deity status. She has a ton of performances to enjoy, but after listening to two songs in English, perhaps you would be curious to listen to her sing in her native tongue in the magical performance of "Arirang Alone" @ kzbin.info/www/bejne/sHfcn5eBbruCec0 BTW, it's only natural to associate Sohyang's voice, particularly in her head voice, with Disney since it contains such palpable quality of purity, clarity and sincerity that we often seek in the innocence of children. Many reactors have indicated at the start of this song that the EXTRAORDINARY So Hyang's angelic vocals sound like a Disney princess. Like you, it was meant to be a high compliment. This CLASSIC song was written by Paul Simon over 50 years ago and performed with his singing partner, Art Garfunkel (Simon & Garfunkel). Over the years, there have been numerous versions from many artists, including Aretha Franklin and Elvis Presley. So Hyang's version is the best one I've heard. So Hyang is known as the Korean Mariah Carey. In my never to be humble opinion, as GREAT as Mariah Carey is, in her prime and on her best day, her voice never had the power or sustained breath control of So Hyang. At your earliest convenience, please react to So Hyang, performing Whitney Houston's 'I Have Nothing.'. I believe So Hyang made this song her own. Whitney Houston herself would have said, DANYUM!!

I agree, So Hyang is perhaps the best singer on the planet (with Dimash), maybe even more versatile and controlled than Whitney and Mariah (I love Whitney, but...). She has it all (maybe not a low register, but she just goes up two octaves, ha). Thanks fo reacting to her. She has become my favorite!

Original by Simon & Garfunkel, but not even near this performance. First she make a traditional performance, second verse is dramatic (with the choir and her giving it a full voice) and when she kicks in third verse, you get the feeling that this is the ULTIMATE version of this song. Sohyang is THE NAME in pop music performance in the second decade of the 21st Century!

Well... when she sang a song or like these she always improving and using mostly her arrangment, she did her own "thing" on her own way to interpret the song.. Well she is queen.. she is both powerful at techniques and also emotion... btw Her life is so inspirational.. she is devout christian singer who really more like singing to God more than fame/money which make us not much seen her on media/tv in korea even the world stage though she is worldclass singer vocalist ever!! Yet we can ussually see her more often her singing in chtuch or charities. She won from faught with cancer and kept her singing didnt give up in her illness. She is cancer surviver.and to sohyang, her goal is to use her voice to comfort people who are going through difficult times as she been through, these why ppl are emotionally in touch whenever she sing a song....

Paul Simon wrote this and Simon and Garfunkel released it I believe in 1972 as a pop ballad but over the years it has become more gospel related ... many artists now try and sing the So Hyang version rather than the original.
