The actress who played Marfushka passed away earlier this year (Jan 2023). As of July 2023, Nastya is still alive. Ivanushka's actor spent some time in prison in the mid-80s for financial crimes, which affected him pretty badly. And Baba Yaga was actually played by a man

The movie was made in 1964 and is a soviet classic. Definitely isn't low budget! Go back and rewatch and check it out. You don't come up with all that makeup the cast was wearing and changing out throughout the filming, the witch's rotating house, tons and TONS of custom props, all the different sets, the diverse wardrobes for the large cast ... this couldn't have been low budget. I was trying to find what the actual budget was, but no luck. But these holiday movies, especially based on folk tales. I'm willing to bet they spared no expense. The cast was also very seasoned. I doubt some of them weren't cheap. The guy that played Jack Frost had been in movies for 30 years by the time he starred in this movie. Ok most of my comment here is just geeking out lol. Fun looking into some of these movies that came out decades before our time.

MST3K is always hit and miss with me. The problem with watching people riff on bad movies is that if the movie is too bad/boring, no amount of joking can keep my interest. Thankfully, this B-film is just the right amount of entertaining to keep me glued. And the jokes were pretty good too!
@siukong6 жыл бұрын
I've gotta agree with you. At the end of the day, you're still watching a terrible movie (usually). Sometimes no amount of riffing can compensate for that fact. It's like if you tried to make a plate of decomposing garbage palatable with herbs and spices. However much seasoning you put cannot make up for the underlying rot. I've probably seen 40+ episodes and only for about a quarter of them can I say I enjoyed myself. With the rest of them I was either bored out of my skull or wanting to tear my hair out from how bad the movie was.
@siukong6 жыл бұрын
That all being said, many of those 'unenjoyable' episodes I still found worthwhile. Sometimes an awful movie still has a few interesting elements despite being a hot mess, and it can be fascinating to see the depths of incompetence to which filmmakers can sink. I believe experiencing a few train wrecks can help one better appreciate the rest of the continuum of movie quality, from mediocre to average to good to great.

The stepmother slapped her daughter in the face at the end and then immediately consoled her, and earlier in the movie when she fell into the lake she slapped her in the face with her braid and then immediately consoled her. My psychotherapist sense is tingling...

You know... I can't believe I'm saying this, but this really isn't that bad. I'm sure in its original language it's a pretty decent kid's movie.

You're right, it's much better in russian, and it's actually a classic christmas/new year movie in Russia. I suppose it doesn't look that stupid if you know the mythology.

elanor2006 Or... maybe you’d know for sure if this was one long fairy tale or a mishmash of smaller ones. In any case, I can respect the level of attempted authenticity they give here.

It's good and poetic and I absolutely can't understand why they mocked leshiy леший, the forest's spirit. What's wrong with him? We never mocked fairies or elves.

@@elanor2006 yeah, alot of myths and fairy tales are hilariously stupid if you didnt grow up with them. My grandma had some pretty scary ones like the guy who cuts misbehaving childrens thumbs off which is hilarious the first tiem you hear it

Ehh every problem has no stakes and is solved near-instantly, giving no tension. The pacing flies without really setting up scenes or stakes, relationships are assumed with no build up or establishing and everyone is incredibly one-dimensional. It suffers from all the problems of an archaic fairy-tale, namely in being stone age-simple so that anyone can understand it. There's a reason most fairy-tales have been adapted to being children stories. Basically making fun of this movie is like making fun of Blue's Clues. That said this movie was definitely more charming than a lot of the stuff they riffed.

Probably because the movie itself isn't among the worst out there. Even a mangled mishmash of Russian fairy tales can be made entertaining if enough effort is put into it.
@plucas19 жыл бұрын
This movie is definitely in the 'so bad its good' territory. Its extremely goofy and weird, but at least that makes it entertaining despite the bad acting and awful dub. Plus some of the effects and production values are pretty good considering its time and place of origin. i really don't understand why the translators didn't just call Baba Yaga by her name instead of 'hunchback fairy.'
@АннаКубалова-г5о3 жыл бұрын
It's a good film and a classic one. If your Americans have different values... well, when I went to some old Hollywood film and I didn't like something and I wrote about it I got an answers like "shut up, bitch, commie and troll" Yes, from American point of view dome animals definitely have more right and some cultures have to be ashamed of themselves and dissappear for America's good self - feeling

@@АннаКубалова-г5о dude, I’m sorry you have been trolled, but he was saying that they should use the correct name for Baba Yaga…I think you misunderstood. I love this movie and am familiar with Baba Yaga and agree that her real name should be used in translation.

@@Du-Masses I agree... I LOVE Baba yaga and her chicken hut.
