Did anyone else notice how he changed his voice between "my time went so quickly" and "I went lickety splicky"? It's like he turned on the Tom Waits switch, and for just a single verse we heard his real voice for just a moment. Obviously the growl we all know and love is his signature, but it was interesting to see the change.

He has always done that tho - listen the great album 'Dimestore Novels' - Tom live at Ebbets field. Before the version on the album he says it's his 4th set of the night and he doesn't know what to play, someone calls out this track and he says 'Oh I did that already' --- Then someone else says 'Do it again Tom' and he says 'Alright' and does this version.
