But...why the title "Book of Hours"...?
@klausolekristiansen296016 күн бұрын
It has prayers for various times throughout the day.
@southernlady508516 күн бұрын
The title came from the liturgical prayer offices followed by mainly Christian cloistered religious communities. They followed a schedule called an horarium. An horarium (Latin for the hours) is a schedule of the times for prayer that cloistered Religious use through the day. It became tradition to say certain prayers on certain days and times. A Book of Hours and its brother, so to speak, a Breviary, would contain these prescribed prayers that would be said throughout the day at different hours. The Brieviary is more detailed typically than a Books of Hours. So in cloistered convents and monasteries (and other religious groups as well, even some Protestant groups) would gather together to pray, sing psalms, and read Scripture in order to honor God and be with Him in prayer as well as to consecrate the day; that is, to make the day holy and God centered. This helps the Religious to focus entirely upon God as opposed to the things of the world. You’ll understand why the book that was used during these times of prayer came to be called “Book of Hours” when you see an Horarium. Here is a typical Horarium from the Visitation nuns of Snellville, GA. This schedule isn’t as rigorous as some communities (per St Jane de Chantel’s intent to include the disabled in the community she founded), but you can still get the idea of what an horarium is like: 05:30 AM Rise’ 06:00 AM Meditation and silent prayer 06:55 AM Office of Morning Prayer 07:30 AM Holy Mass 08:30 AM Breakfast 09:00 AM Novitiate classes 10:00 AM Office of Readings 10:30 AM Work time 12:00 PM Dinner 01:15 PM Recreation 01:45 PM Office of Daytime Prayer 02:15 PM Rest / work 03:00 PM Spiritual Reading 03:30 PM Tea or coffee followed by work 04:30 PM Exposition of Blessed Sacrament 05:00 PM Office of Evening Prayer 06:00 PM Supper 07:15 PM Recreation 08:00 PM Office of Night Prayer 10:00 PM Lights out You can see how the day is broken up into segments based on a mostly hourly schedule, hence the book used to follow the hours of the day became known as the Book of Hours. The Book of Hours and Brieviary have the same purpose, but the Book of Hours is simply a more abbreviated version of a Brieviary. (Think an abridged version of Moby Dick. Same story but without the long passages on the intricacies of whaling itself.) The laity eventually started to use the Book of Hours in the home to teach the Faith and for prayers. In fact the word “horae” in Middle (not Old) English meant “primer,” what we would think of as a book of basic instruction. Hope this answers your questions!

It's lovely, but why in the name of all that is good and pure are you touching it with your hands?!? Your body oils will absolutely degrade that leather over time. It will acidify the paper of the pages. Put on some bloody gloves!

No. Old myth long gone. Professionals know better nowadays. Gloves are awful for books. Clean hands are sufficient.

I've illustrated mine, copying similar pictures. It isn't as beautiful as this, but it's as lovely as I can make it. I heard of several people in the middle ages doing so, too, not just pre-purchased books of Hours, but people illustrating their own. I sing the office, and the music looks nice, too.

For a book fiend like me, THAT is an orgasmic book. The oldest book I own (no, NOT a rare book collector, but just LOVE books) is a text on Lycanthropy from the 1800s. Nothing special, cloth-bound. But the pages are heavy thick material. And for me, then a 20ish year old, to find such a volume was amazing. And in the catch-all bin of a 2nd hand shop as well! I still have that book on my bookshelf back in the Ph. 😊

I adore The Book of Hours, and this one is exquisite! The colors are so deep and true, and as an Anglican (yes, despite being a lifelong Southern Californian), the contents of this book are far more precious to me than the embossed covers, the interior gilt, the page edges, and the amazing illuminations. (Although I would have to learn French to read this book!) My Master's degree is in British medieval literature, and I studied only a smidge of French medieval literature in translation. I don't want to know how much it costs, though; the budget of this modest teacher could never handle it. Thank you for showing it to us; it's absolutely outstanding. As a former bookseller, I love this channel soooo much!
@southernlady508516 күн бұрын
Good for you to be a teacher of medieval literature! Although, I majored in Romantic lit, and have advanced degrees in theology and religion, I have found my passion in the Anglo-Saxon into early medieval period. Trying to learn Old English and have been studying illuminated manuscripts now in retirement. It was my love of Tolkien, iconography, and family genealogy discoveries ( some Vikings) that brought me to this time period. Want to incorporate the techniques of iconography/illuminated artwork into my own art compositions.

If you haven’t I would highly recommend praying the Lituary of the Hours. Either in Latin or in English. Those are the prayers all religious like nuns and priests pray everyday throughout the day at certain times. I pray they even though I’m a layman. The Hours is considered the prayer of the whole world and of the church.
