Thanks Tomy, your work is very inspiring to me. I love woodworking and playing the guitar, your videos and they way you work are really motivating. I'd like to suggest that you also give some measure in metric system because fractions in inches sound like a nightmare to us, thanks and keep making your wonderful work.

Very beautiful! Did you spring the joint for the maple back, i.e. did you make the center of the joint a little (tiny) gap to allow for long term drying not to stress the ends of the joint? In looking at old tables and drawers, often the ends of glued joints open because the ends appearcto shrink more. It may be those were cases of freedom of movement over a hundred years, where ends of joints typically are freer to move than the centers... Or the reverse... In one case butt joints in a poplar? drawer side were held by the front, made of a more stable birds eye maple, and split along the butt joints after 80 years or so of drying.
@HovingtonInstruments5 жыл бұрын
Hi Joe, a lot a people are unaware of this process in lutherie, there is no spring clamping done on tops or backs. The joint needs to be impeccable, and the way we make sure it is, is by checking the joint in front on a light and if there is light shining through it not good enough. You have to remember that furniture and musical instruments have different uses and that they are stressed differently. For example, an arch top has all the weight of the strings applied on to the top. Exactly where the biggest part of the spring would be resulting in extra stress. ( I do want to point out the I am aware that a good spring joint does not show any gaps). For your concern about the end of the board opening overtime this is prevented by having them glued to the neck block and tail block. Really appreciate your question, it was a very good one. Thanks for watching

Awesome summary compilation video. Where and how did you learn the luthier craft? My understanding is that you were into machining. Any advice for a beginner. Again, Simply beautiful work.!
@HovingtonInstruments6 жыл бұрын
I was in Steel manufacturing for 22 years, Fitter/welder.. Both my grand father and father were woodworkers and It was around me for as far as I can remember. I started woodworking in my early 20's. the Lutherie came after I had made bunch of projects and wanted to add dimention to the woodworking craft. I read a lot... I mean A LOT of books on the subject and still do. Lutherie is an art..You get better with practice.. My advice would be to read about it.. the best information on the topic is still in books. Focus on what you prefer (acoustic, electric, etc...) hope this helps... also, feel free to ask , I would be happy to help if I can..
