This video is my first trotline crabbing trip of 2020 from my Hobie Pro Angler 360 kayak. Kayak crabbing with a trotline is a lot of fun. It's a lot of work, but can be very rewarding.

Thanks brother! Crabbing from a kayak is challenging, but very rewarding when it works out. It took a lot of trial and error to work out the kinks. I hope to get in a few more trips before it gets too cold.

Congrats on the PA360. It's an amazing kayak. You're gonna love it. Trotline crabbing is one of the reasons I wanted the PA360. The 360 drive makes it so much easier to maneuver when crabbing. If you fish in tight quarters it's a must have. Trotline crabbing is a lot of fun once you work out all of the kinks. I have a playlist of crabbing videos that can help you get everything setup. That’s pretty productive water awesome job I wonder if you could rig up a keel in the front to help keep you straight when you net I have a CNC plasma I’d be happy to help

The 360 drive helps me straighten out faster than my older drive. I do actually have a keel towards the back to help track better, but I don't think it will help when I'm netting. A removable keel that could be mounted to the front might work. Do you think you could make something like that? I really appreciate the help.

Having a 360 drive makes it a lot easier to adjust when that happens.

Thanks for pointing that out. I did eventually notice that, but it still turns depending on how I dip my net. It can act like a paddle. It really turns when I catch big crab and dip deeper. This is just something you have to deal with when running a trotline. Having the 360 drive really helps make quick adjustments. Can't wait for the season to start.

Welcome to Maryland! Where do you live? They are pretty much everywhere by late summer and fall. If you want to start earlier, you have to travel south. If you are on Facebook, join some of the local groups to see when they start running good in your area. Bluecrab.info is another good site for reports. I usually start crabbing at the end of May if the temps are warm, but I will make my first trips with my boat and will use traps. I'll switch to my trotline and kayak when it's much warm and I see good reports.

Right now the season is winding down, so it's gonna be much tougher now. Where are your located? Pretty much every river has crabs depending on the time of year. I usually check local reports to see where they are catching to determine where I go.

that 360 turn is amazing. trot lining for crabs on a kayak?! looks so fun. looking to try some pier locations around Wye Island and Bill Burton Pier. any other recommendations this time of year? I tried northern western bay area near baltimore but literally caught 1 crab all day. i dont have a kayak yet so mostly pier fishing. any tips would be great.

The 360 is pretty amazing. It make crabbing from a kayak much easier. One key to crabbing that might help you out is paying attention to the tides. You want to make sure you are crabbing during a moving tide, so the scent of your bait is moving around for the crabs to hone in on. Crabbing from piers can be hit or miss. I don't use my Bixpy Jet all the time. I actually wanted to get a bit of a workout on that day. I have used it for crabbing before and it works well, but you still have to deal with the kayak turning when you net.

I wish I could 😁 I caught a ton of big females that day. It's been well over 10 years since rec crabbers could keep females. I do occasionally buy female crabs, since the are cheaper.

@TomyTek How long of the trotline are you running from a kayak? I've been using both FoxyMate and mesh ring traps for a few years and thinking of trying out trotline from my Outback.

I have a 300ft and 600ft line that I run from my kayak. I might try 1200ft this year, just to see if I could do it. Just be patient with the process. It might take a few times to work out the kinks.
