In this video I discuss different options for making a prop stick or roller for running trotline for crabbing. A Prop Stick is a vital part of running a trotline for crabbing. You are various prop stick setups that you can use. One of my new subscribers ask me what would be the best way to attach a prop stick to the side of jon boat, so I decide to make this video sooner rather than later.

Really enjoy your videos. I am trying to setup my Hobie Outback for trot line crabbing this season near Saint Michaels. You mentioned having specific instructions on how to make your kayak prop stick in one video. I was not able to find it. If you wouldn’t mind sending a link I would be grateful. Thank you!

I never got a chance to make that video. I do still plan to make it. A lot of people have asked about it. First, I will make a video showing it in more detail. That should be out next week. I have to make a second prop stick for my wife's kayak, so that will be done fairly soon. Thanks for watching.

Great video, thanks. Questions - How far off the water do you set your prop stick? And, do you find that you need to raise your prop stick for dirty or murky water? Finally, what is the optimal distance between snood drops? Thanks
@TomyTekOutdoors
@TomyTekOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. You can see my prop stick in use in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6uxiqeOmbB6qNk&t=. I'm going to estimate from the video it's a 2 feet or so. There are quite a few factors that will determine how high to make it. The height determines where you want the crabs to come up for the person netting. I don't change the height of my prop stick. Early in the season, I run traps instead of running a trotline because crabs tend to drop of early. I space out my snoods 5-6 feet apart. If you want to bait less line like if you were running clam bags, I would space them even further apart. Thanks for watching.

wahoos are cool, but they are not wide enough, they keep the line way to close to the boat, insert an 8 inch pipe to expand, and you already figured out to cap the end since the u is smaller. good vid

By the way that roller doesn't need that elbow after the field goal plus it will be easer to un hook the line after running

I plan on crabbing from 23ft WA any recommendation on line size and anchor size for this size boat?
@TomyTekOutdoors
@TomyTekOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
Thicker line would be preferred, since you would have a lot of weigh pulling on the line from your boat. Pre-built lines I've seen come with #8 Loktite, which should be fine. I use 1/4" soft lay on my boat. An important thing to notes is to make sure you anchor and down lines are long enough. I would make them at least 50' long. This determines the angle your boat pulls on your anchor when you run the line. If they are too short, they will pull your anchor and your line will get loose. This was a problem I had with my boat. I also got bigger anchors, which I think are over kill, but I use 20lb anchors. Here's a link to a video of my running a trotline from my 23' Maycraft Pilothouse kzbin.info/www/bejne/fGfIoIVpnrWNnpo.

They are clam bags with the snapbait added to them. I'll make another video showing them in detail I'm hoping they help me bait and unbait clam bags quicker. I haven't use them yet. I bought a couple to try. I'll do a review after I've used them a couple of times. Here's a link to their website www.snapbait.com. They are locally made in Maryland.

How close should the prop stick be to the water or does it vary?
@TomyTekOutdoors
@TomyTekOutdoors 6 жыл бұрын
Ryan Poole you are correct. It really is personal preference, but depends on if you are running a straight line or a snoodline. It will also depend on how long your snoods are. That's why I made my first one adjustable. I kind of eye balled my prop stick for my kayak and it worked out.

You could just make a rod holder prop stick
@TomyTekOutdoors
@TomyTekOutdoors 6 жыл бұрын
The rod holder option worked fine for my first jon boat. The cradle was better for my other boats because I could move it forward or back depending on if I'm netting or my guests are netting. It gave my guests a better angle to net.

I'll be making videos this winter showing how and what I use to make my content.

I really appreciate your feedback. The purpose of the video was to share the different options. I will include lengths and more detail in my how to make one video. I just need to find the time to make the video. The sizes, lengths, etc will vary depending on your vessel. The size of the PVC in this video is 1 1/4" except for the adjustable portion on my old prop stick. If there is anything you would like me to include in my how to make one video, please let me know and I will include it for you. Thanks for watching.
