The Rules for this Campaign are:
- Dead is dead. When I die, the campaign ends.
- Full realism settings. Only the external camera is allowed for filming purposes
- Manual Targeting
- No recognition manual for random merchant ships
- Attempt to abide by the historical orders in regards to the London Naval Treaty, Operating Procedures and Restrictions

That tanker full of high-octane avgas had to be from that scattered convoy. No way that wouldn't be escorted.

How can you tell it's an avgas and not some other liquid like petrol or crude oil?

Right decision to go with the nearer convoy for easier detection. 3 Other reasons: Less fuel consumption, the convoy detected by a U-Boat can be shadowed by it, the shadowing U-Boat can also support your attack and split up escorts.

The Mark II was first used against a U-boat in November of 1940. But *night* attacks didn't start until mid-41. There's a lot of ahistorical aspects to SH3 including with the various megamods.

@@Tonci87 Iirc Stiebler found the planes don't even actually use radar in the game anyway. The ability to attack at night at any stage of the war, along with having leigh lights at any stage, are just common ahistorical errors in the long list of such in SH3. Found his quote: "Aircraft don’t really use radar. I believe from testing that actually no radar-fitted bomber uses its radar to locate the U-boat - the radar serves only to alert the U-boat in SH3. The scripted bomber flies unconcernedly on until it sees the U-boat visually - then it will attack. The land-based bomber however is generated just a short distance away from the U-boat, and is given the correct angle by the code to fly towards the U-boat. Only later does the aircraft see the U-boat lying across its path." Guess you'll just have to install an AA-radar. And a bunch of flak-cannons, preferably 88mm. On a three times larger sub... Best of luck, may all your torpedoes miss as 'badly'. Looks like rough times ahead.

Apparently they had a squadron of PBYs at that time. I can´t say if they flew nightime patrols though.

The HYdrophone operator would be able to hear a ship sinking due to bulkheads breaking, the sound of water rushing in, etc.

why cant u just go periscope depth and wait to fire torp? u were already in front of it... every time getting sighted by freaking freighter is just bad decision making.

Submerging reduces your speed, maneuverability and situational awareness. U-Boat commanders were encouraged to stay on the surface as much as possible. We are currently in a transitional period where that becomes less and less viable. I´m experiencing the same lessons that U-boat commanders had to learn the hard way.
