I dont know why we took all the WORST, most insufferable people from highschool and gave them even more power by calling them "influencers"... but can we stop now?

The term influencer in its self is already super weird, because it makes it seem like they are activists or something, yet they don’t even have to ever speak about anything meaningful. I know they do influence people, but I still don’t know if I would call someone that, if the influence is bad. I guess what I am trying to say, they are influencers last, and many other things first. Also, kind of seems like they don’t even have talent, so it is kind of disrespectful for artists or comedians or informative channels to be called influencers.. and I don’t understand why someone would choose calling THEMSELVES influencer, rather than the actual thing they do?

I wish I remembered who said this, but a KZbinr or Tiktoker said that the shift with celebrity culture changed because the role between celebs and fans have flipped. Celebrities used to make the demands while everyone bowed down, but now the audience is making demands, so celebrities don't hold power anymore.

He has been doing this right in front of everyone’s eyes ( including yours ) for a long time & it’s disturbing. I'll believe it when I see it. I remember in 2023 when they said that the Kardashians were becoming irrelevant and that they weren't gonna be invited to the MET gala and blah, blah, blah (spoiler: they WERE invited to the MET)...it's been a year and people are still as obsessed with celebs as before. They're on an unfollowing spree that will last a couple of months (if not weeks) and then they'll go back to stanning those people as if nothing ever happened. Remember that people have SHORT-term memory...Just look at the Hailey Bieber drama from last year and how people wanted to cancel her for being a mean girl and allegedly stalking Justin Bieber...fast forward a year later and she came out unharmed with gaining more fans and being pregnant with Bieber's baby. Then there's the Balenciaga pedophile drama and Kim Kardashian calling them out...fast forward a year later and Kim is now an ambassador for Balenciaga and people have seemed to have forgotten about the drama from last year. My point is that people have very bad memory and they say that they'll cancel X and Y but they never ACTUALLY go through with it and those people/things remain permanently uncancelled. Just look at how they have kept the Kardashians relevant for almost 20 years...Sorry to say it but that family will never be irrelevant since they've left a legacy and keep procreating...

They’re famous -because- they’re rich, not because they’re good people. Not a single one of these people did we go, “Oh, wow, they’re such a good person, let’s give them tons of money and attention for it.” And influencers are influencers because they show us a lifestyle that a large portion of the population wants. They’re just a reflection of our desires. Maybe if we changed our own priorities instead of worrying about whatever celebrities are doing there’d be a change in the world at large.

If I made $75,000 A MONTH I would pay for everyone in an assisted living facility in my community to live there for free for at least a year, I would buy groceries for the people in line behind me, I would go to the schools I went to and write the teachers checks, I would donate to women’s shelters and give food to food pantries… or at least I hope I would. I hope I would retain some humanity. I just wish rich and famous people would budget in some charitable giving and giving back to their communities. It’s the least they could do.

Asking celebrities to speak up about social issues just perpetuates the notion that we should idolize them. Why should anyone listen to them when it comes to politics in the first place? Most of the them are no smarter than the average person and we should all band together to stop listening to them all together, not ask them to speak up. Stop letting them have that platform in the first place

i agree but also disagree as when you support an artist or somebody (or at least i speak personnally) i want to know what they support, do they support genocide or not ? it’s not necessarily about their influence (which whether we like it or not they have) but more about do they share the same and basic values as you.. but yea i used to idolize some artists but none have talked about palestine so fuck em

The thing is, influencers have influence. They have followers. If they deserved their followers and privileges, they would speak up. They would understand that they are leaders for their followers and that it comes with responsibilities -- including the responsibility to act ethically. They are NOT doing that despite knowing the power their words have. Hence, now we are letting them go. (I never personally valued them, but I know they have people who do and will fall into step with their actions and words.) Also, I wanna know what sort of a person I'm following and whether they're modern-day N*zis/genocide supporters, support LGBTQ+ discrimination, removing women's rights/autonomy, or something. So... :/
@NVNNOV
@NVNNOV 7 ай бұрын
there's a difference between idolizing and humanizing. you're right, they are no better than the average person and that's EXACTLY why they should act like it by actually showing their humanity by clearly stating their stance on these very real issues. there's a million ways a celebrity can justify their silence by saying they're scared of losing their career without ACTUALLY saying those exact words and still gain the empathy and trust of their audience back. the issue is, most celebrities and influencers have way too much pride to even admit to their own failures as people with platforms and would rather deflect the cause of their scandals to anything but the actual topic at hand, just like what haylee bailee did by making her apology all about not being invited to the met gala rather than the actual issue which was the message and elitist portrayal written all over her Marie Antoinette inspired outfit.
@bean1731
@bean1731 7 ай бұрын
I so agree with this. I honestly think people who unfollow celebs just because they DON’T speak about certain issues are weird af. Like, I can understand if a celeb posts about supporting something you don’t support you could unfollow, but why would you be mad because they choose to stay silent? They are celebrities, not politicians. Their job is to act, sing, etc. I honestly have more respect for celebs that just do their jobs and don’t try to be activists.

I can see why it can be weird to ask celebrities for opinions (though I also agree with other comments about wanting to know who you're supporting), but I don't see why no one should listen to them at all. If they have something they feel strongly about they have as much right as the rest of us to speak on it. The fact that they have more eyes on them doesn't take that away. They are three deminsional people who have opinions and who can research and be knowledgeable about topics they speak on, just like anyone else.

As a huge history buff that "Let them eat cake" video was SHOCKING. Like, genuinely it's baffling how someone could take a phrase that is theorized to have been made by an extremely naive young woman and willingly reference a period of such brutal class inequality. Like, NO ONE should be aspiring to be Marie Antoinette or go back to 1790s France. It was a good time for nobody, and glamourizing it like that is CRAZY when the person you're referencing was beheaded because the public didn't like how wealthy she was. The irony is strong.

I had this thought as well. Celebrities are just people who amass a large popularity and become well known. This could extend to many, KZbinrs, Streamers, Influencers, Creators, and what have you… I’d argue celebs are gonna be here for a long while. Perhaps we in this current social culture need to take a step back when interacting with such individuals. Acknowledge their achievements or possible merit but let’s remember that these are just people! Why pedestal them? Compare ourselves? Follow their every move? These people carry flaws like anyone else. Let them inspire you but know it is okay to detach as well. Just my thoughts :)

Unpopular opinion: but I feel like this whole blocking them on social media or just "ignoring" them isn't going to change anything. Celebrities were around long before social media, and many of them made their money prior to social media. So as long as the masses continue to buy their cheaply made overly expensive products, watch their shows and or movies, or spend their money in establishments owned by them, they will continue to make millions of dollars. While continuing to flaunt their wealth in our faces with little to no remorse for those without or those living in the despair.

An issue I have is that people expect celebrities to speak on political topics. They are not more well-versed and educated on social and political topics than non-celebrity people. Their voices are not more important than ours. We give them too much power by asking them to say something, to the point where all they have to do is post a block in solidarity to satisfy the public. Stop giving them more power. Their only job is to entertain. Edit: As celebrities, it can be irresponsible to speak on topics that you are not trained, informed, or qualified for. They can draw attention to an issue or political activist using their platform, but it isn’t their responsibility to do so. I agree that politics and art have always been intertwined, but artists can withhold or express their thoughts in whatever way they choose, and we don’t have to support them if we don’t like their work. The problem is that we look to celebrities for guidance (and become upset if their stances don’t align with our own) when most are not educated, thus giving them more power. They have only few responsibilities: to act, sing, & entertain.

See, I've seen this take a lot, but the thing is historically large artists have made statements about world events. When fame was about talent many artists spoke out about world events. We don't expect them to know more, just to do better. ESPECIALLY if they profit off of pretending to be 'just like us' or socially aware.

I half agree half disagree. They're not more educated than the average person. I agree with that. I don't understand why people are disappointed at celebrities like they expected them to speak out to begin with. But to say it wouldn't make more of a impact is just false. Their voices are not more important but they could hold more power because like or not celebrities do have power and they could still use it if they really wanted to. They can still donate if they wanted to. Better than us "regular joes" can. But i do agree you have no rooom to get mad at others if you're not speaking out either.

I started to realize that Celebrities aren’t that relevant anymore when tik tok started to be very mainstream. People don’t see celebrities anymore that much in front of their eyes. They see more people who are normalos like them, so the fancy celebrities just faded slowly away. As an millennial you always saw celebrities on posters, on magazine, on tv etc. So they seemed so untouchable now the new generation don’t see them that much anymore, so they care less. You‘re seeing that more after more look up to the views on music videos from big artist most don’t even reach 100 Mio anymore only if it’s an trend on tik tok etc.

Blocking celebrities like Taylor Swift or Kim Kardashian it's not going to affect them even it's beneficial for them, less people who follow them but the same amount of people who consume their content only promotes more the account. This type of massive celebrities don't depend on social media interaction, they depend on their products (merch, their cosmetic line and concerts). Let's just say, if people stop going to the eras tour, stop buying Taylor's merch and completely ignore her (don't block her, just simply ignore her) maybe we can do something. But in the end, we should not expect celebrities talking about this type of issues, celebrities often don't get affected by them.

The Haley issue, I think she didn't know how deep the audio bit went because she always uses trendy sounds. I think she meant as in "I ate with this look" by using the audio not as in "I'm flexing over y'all". Also it is true she never was inside the met, sure the dress was definitely expensive but I believe because she was gonna get exposure through her own fame it was a win for the designer anyway 🤷 I don't think it was that deep here honestly, can't compare to Drake allegations or JLo's tone deaf behaviour

This is actually a really good point. But I think it can get even deeper and I think there's more nuance to it. Just think about it, maybe people have given up on our politicians and are turning to celebrities. Celebrities have access to money and money opens different doors and gives them the ability to be more forceful in terms of demanding change or taking certain actions. Remember they are American citizens too that are at the will of our leaders or are supposed to be. These citizens however are obviously at an elevated position in society.

Yes I’m still a fan but as great as she is I shouldn’t have expected anything more from her than good music bc I don’t know her as a person and shouldn’t have assumed anything about her which would have saved me from being let down if she’s isn’t the person I’ve made her out to be in my head.

I have never been a Stan of any celebrity, I don’t understand the constant worshiping or thinking they could do no wrong . If you are a rich celebrity or gatekeeper in that industry , then you had to do some really shady stuff to get there , it does not just happen on its own . They have to do things to get the top and stay on top and suppress anyone else they deem as competition. I am glad everyone is being exposed and people are finally seeing most of the stuff these celebrities are doing in the background . They manipulate the perception by controlling the media and social media , this goes for politicians too. Average people are losing jobs , can’t pay their bills even with a job , can’t afford rent , go to the doctor or even buy groceries. The inflation is just astonishingly high and there is a huge income gap that they can no longer hide .

Hailey Baylee grew up in a very rich community in my state (elitist)- I used to do massage in the city she’s from and one of my clients was the CEo of shop NBC and he lived in this community, lives in $17,000 NYC Apartment that she flaunts in her tik tok, had a millionaire ex, was at the met gala and she is still claiming she is not elitist. Gaslighting. Who knows what else she lies about. Btw I am not a hater, I just really don’t like liars and fake people. I hate liars and fakes too, you don’t know my life story or the pain I endured from liars and fake people, but you just spread misinformation. You believe a lie. I rebuke your lies in the name of Jesus. I’m born July 30th and use to represent being a Leo, I was never deep into astrology and just thought it was innocent fun. I am working on a more serious relationship with Christ and I realize why God hates it, so many people really think that being born in a certain time puts a specific character trait or traits to you. Foolish. People turn to a zodiac vs praying consistently to God about someone’s character before allowing them in their life or if it’s a test for more maturity. It’s disgusting and disrespectful to try and identify an entire group of people or people born in a certain time frame with a certain character or you think you know them. Good or bad I don’t claim any of it, I rebuke this in Jesus name. God knows my heart, not some chick who studied astrology and can’t live past 100 years, and still have to poop, and eat. You’re no God and you don’t speak for me being born in that time, no one does, good or bad. Only time will tell when it comes to identifying character flaws, but God can help you way more than some zodiac. Habitual liars are born all year around and it’s not based on zodiacs and their “sign.” Always keep your guard up and observe character, not some birthday and when they were born, actors with evil intentions are born everyday and can fool you for a long time. All hearts are capable of wickedness and gravitate towards selfishness, you may not be a murderer, a cheater, or a liar, but if you examine your life, you won’t find perfection, just because all the people you met born in that time frame were liars or negative doesn’t speak for everyone. It’s another form of disinformation, discrimination, generalization hurting others believing foolish lies, spreading foolish lies because of your personal experience, and creating unnecessary stereotypes about an individual before you actually meet them and get to know them. God bless you.

I wish more young people would realize that kpop culture isn't all pretty and fun. It's a lot of high stress perfectionism and not necessarily something to be envious of. Idols are on super strict diets and the male idols probably have PR teams that cover up a lot of bad behavior when they aren't on camera. There's enough reasons why a "4B" movement exists in South Korea. Women are fed up with being mistreated by smug men, and I'm sure many of the kpop guys are among the powerful scumbags beneath the great lighting and makeup. (And not just the idols themselves but the production companies who manage these celebrities and work them extremely hard.) I'll be happy when the kpop scene finally has its #MeToo moment.

On the asking for donations part. What I found sooo much worse than the tone deaf celebs begging for donations. Was the CONSTANT begathon of our politicians. In times of utter crises for Americans. These politicians (and it was all of them, you can’t even blame one party or one person) weren’t compassionately begging for donations for their constituents in need. They were continually begging working class Americans to fund their multi million dollar political campaigns. While they are all multi millionaires! The gall it takes to do something like that. The total selfishness. I heard someone say “hindsight is 2020, which is what the year 2020 was about”. We all see things so much more clearly now. @@averysspookshowspectacular6205 I didn’t know that. Thanks for clarifying 🙏🏼🙂 Though, I still take issue with the amount of emails I received during incredibly trying times. Where these politicians were constantly begging people to donate to their political campaigns. Yet never once did I see any politician mobilizing support for any of their citizens who were & still are in crises. I just personally think it speaks volumes about where we’re at in our society. You know, philanthropy used to be a big thing. Charity. Now it seems these people are just racing to amass as much money & power as they can. As quickly as they can. In whatever way possible. & imho it’s incredibly toxic & serves no benefit to the average person struggling just to get by. Just my two cents though 🙃✌🏼

May be a “hot take” but this whole “boycott celebs” is so funny to me because its the same people that put these people on the map, bought their product, and continue to support them in various ways. It’s very easy to simply NOT buy the product or to NOT follow them. Prime example is the kardashians, everyone loves to hate them, bash them, etc…but whose buying up all the skims, Good American, KK, etc… it’s y’all that made them famous, rich, and keeping their pockets lined. It all stems back to being intentional with WHO you support
@sansastark8834
@sansastark8834 7 ай бұрын
I think that's a broad assumption. Most people who hate the kardashians are not buying their products...just because you know some people, don't group them in with everyone damn. The boycott is about BLOCKING to materially affect their ad revenue and to then put pressure on those with platforms to be more responsible about the misinformation they are likely to spread with said punishment to their wallet and net profits. Celebs aren't politicians- they are loose canons with unimaginable amounts of unregulated power because no one anticipated social media to become what it is. I think it's really reasonable and people are missing the point and acting a little holier than though ironically

im getting so tired of all those celebrities. most of them dont have any talent and became famous just because. i hate how a lot of those people think they are better than us "normal" people. I am happy that Gen Z is cancelling celebrity culture. we dont need that anyways.

This is gonna controversial for some, but what if some of those celebrities don't know the whole history behind these specific conflicts in the world and are quiet because they don't want to cause further damage online due to being uneducated or having no connection to specific culture or country? I have seen many people comparing this met gala to hunger games, and like I get it with what is happening in the world, being stan of celebs is ridiculous at this point, but when it comes to met gala, it is also charity event for museum so they can continue their work and scientific research on art and fashion and that is also important for history (even though I wouldnt be surprised if met earns way more than museum needs that they could share it with other charitable organisations that focus on help for people in need) while celebrities are over privilaged (unless they came from very tough background) and definetelly brought this on themselves by acting like an activists and we were digging it up before pandemic in 2020 (and before pandemic we were ALL digging for met gala and these celebs even with wars, corruptions and natural disasters happening way before covid, recession or Ukraine vs Russia or Palestine vs Israel), when in reality they are uneducated and as Ricky Gevail once said on Golden Globes in 2020: they know nothing about real world. But also celebs in the end are not political figures so I think there is no point of blaming them for what is happening in world right now, or at least not as main center. I feel like blaiming celebs for some things or rather for everything is like form of escapism and easy way to put blame on, when in reality it is also our fault for making them look like kings and queens that can change a whole world and I think we should look into mirror and realize we made a bed by giving celebs relevancy to point of believing that they can change world, especially back in last decade, when we as people should focus on goverment officals who are ones who hold the real power and are using peoples money and taxes to continue wars, frauds or maybe they have their own parties we don't know about and are laughing at us for going after celebs as easy target but not them

This is so performative. If any of these people blocking celebrities still follow accounts like The Shade Room, I don't wanna hear them say anything about "celebrity culture". It's not just perpetuated by celebrities, it's also the "news sources" that report on and sensationalize everything they do. In fact, plenty of actors and musicians have said that if they could do what they do and earn a living wage without being famous, they would. Celebrities aren't just used as idols, they're also used as scapegoats, which is exactly what's happening now. So many people are so focused on who's being blocked, how many followers are being lost, that Palestine isn't even really being focused on, which was supposedly the point of all this. Also, how is expecting a complete stranger to share your values and then trying to essentially punish them for not doing what you want not parasocial behavior? It's not doing anything other than giving very frustrated people a false sense of accomplishment. Look how many people spoke, and look what our government is still doing. Blocklists aren't doing anything.

If you want your fans to follow you and actually love you , be a good person . If you want them to donate then donate yourself at least 50% or more . Be a leading example , not entitled. This is why kpop stars are more adored than these celebrities.

You know what I find interesting about people is that they will continuously give the most horrible people the benefit of doubt, give them a pass, make excuses for them like Jennifer Lopez, how people just take her behavior and don’t ever call her out about it in real time on the spot, people just continuously take her behavior or excuse her behavior but would never do this for a genuinely good person and it’s baffling and rather infuriating and I don’t understand it, when someone shows you who they are the first time, believe it, people will never cancel celebrities/influencers enough for it to be truly impactful, when you got a quarter of million followers or more losing 1-20 million don’t really mean sh*t now maybe if it went above that it may make them take notice but I doubt they’d lose any sleep over it cause that’s only a very small dent in their following count, this why people have more of idgaf attitude cause they know controversy sales and kind sometimes make you bigger than what you are so it make them quiver a bit but eventually people move on and they end being more famous than they were before, nothing really sticks anymore when people try and do things like canceling someone, in the end it doesn’t stick so it doesn’t work so this whole thing may make celebs take notice but I doubt anything more than that will come of it, people are too stan culture with celebrities/influencers too parasocial to the point nothing else matters but these famous people who in reality gives no f**ks about them but what they can do for them

There’s times I wonder if life will get better for me…and then it’s God…showing me stuff like this that makes me realize how blessed I am to have a place to live and food to eat. There’s so many people out there that don’t have water to bathe and I can take a shower for 20-30 minutes if I want. It’s that and so many other things that keep me in line to quit complaining about how lucky I am in life. Even if single, renting with health issues. It could be worse. I take that in stride every day.

I'm a mature woman, and I've never had this obsession with any celebrity. But then I had hobbies, and events happening in my life to allow me to be distracted or sidetracked by a celebrity's lifestyle. Meaning I have a life ✌🏾🙂

I don't think its the action of the unfollowing or blocking. I think it's just the attitude people have towards these celebs that are really going to affect them because people are waking up to how dystopian things are.

Influencers needs to be stopped; celebrities are not the biggest problem. Not saying they should have god complexes but at least they perform, possess a talent and give us bodies of work we can enjoy forever. Everyday people making millions of dollars by pushing products they don’t use, giving their opinions or sharing their lunch is wild when you think about it

36:38 she shared that she did not pay for any of these dresses that she has worn, that her friend has made them by himself entirely by hand, which to me feels almost worse because with the amount of money she makes she has not reimbursed him in anyway, besides wearing the dressessomething about that just really rubs me the wrong way!
