In this installment of “In the Aisles”, Derek from Vice Grip Garage talks to professional drift racer, stunt driver and former Hot Rod Garage host Tony Angelo of the KZbin series “Stay Tuned”. Hear Tony talk about how he first got interested in drifting (even before it became popular in America), the evolution of “fast” cars in recent decades, and how he came to purchase his first muscle car at the age of fifteen. Also, can too much spray-painting in the shop really “poison” the people next door? Tony has an opinion.

Derek focuses on budget builds, rescues, and how to's for the common folk. From classic cars to tractors Derek has been there and driven it home 600 miles.

I grew up on a small freshwater lake in N. MI. in 1978, Arctic-Cat snowmobiles came out, plowed a huge oval track like 100+ feet wide out on the ice of the lake, and parked out there with everything from motor-homes to cars and pickups. They were out there testing sleds, after a week they packed up and left, but their "track" was still out there. So I went out with a 1973 Olds with a 454 and anti-spin rear-end and proceed to go like 50 MPH sideways around this glorious ice track, what a hoot for a 17 year old.

2 of my favorite youtube hoomans!!! What a treat!!! Man Tony's story about buying the Demon had me smiling! Reminded me of my hot rod story when I was in high-school. My buddy n I saw a 69 gto and we went and looked at it. Turned out it was for sale for 3500.00, this was in 92'. I got my dad and he reluctantly came with me to see it. We drove it and as soon as he got on it he said we're buying this car! This was 31 yrs ago and I still have it today!! Has a nicely built 70 455 n th400 with a 10' continental converter. Such great memories I've had with my gto! My older brother is the mopar guy and had a 71 demon 340 4 speed with 3.91 suregrip, was yellow with black stripes, it was a fun car to drive. He had a 70 challenger rt se 440 with indy heads, plum crazy purple. He sold both yrs ago and he just bought a 71 challenger with a 440 stroked to 500 cubes and a pistol grip 4 speed. It's plum crazy with black stripes and a shaker hood and a spoiler. I've been 2 many pontiac shows and have met most of the pontiac greats, fun times!

I Love this show! It's just like the old days for me. Working in the garage with someone and swapping stories about cars you worked on. These are the kind of feelings that put a smile on your face and make you realize just how lucky you are to have lived in a time, when we have created a culture of people who have a psssion for mechanics. Some people say that certain people are born with it, but someone had to show you or inspire you to fuel that passion.

I can 100% relate to the whole driving a slow car fast situation. My car was a low 9sec car. But, it wasn't any fun driving on the street. It was getting to point of being mildly unreliable, almost pointless to drive on the street. Burnouts at will, even rolling along at 70mph on the freeway. I recently changed it all out to a 5 speed manual, and maybe 450hp. It is waaaay more fun to blast around on back roads. Much more reliable and worry free. I enjoy it more now, than the previous years of it having 800+ hp.

Great interview! Tony’s rendition of getting his first muscle car reminds me of I had and worked on some junkers in high school graduated in 1965 directly into the Marines deployed to Vietnam! Dreamed of purchasing a Dodge Dart 440 wedge or 426 Hemi , too expensive even then! With the money I saved up for 13 months looked for and bought a brand new off the truck 1967 Pontiac Firebird 400! Must have looked at every dealership in Southern California, lived in the San Fernando valley at the time. Found a new Pontiac dealership in Anaheim, near Disney land , the cars were so new that finding a 400 big block was hard to find, one with no power anything was even harder, absolutely no 4 speeds! Every dealership I went to tried to sell me a 6 cylinder 3 or 4 speed! With power everything! Even this dealership in Anaheim! I did not know it at the time but the salesman I was working with was also the owner of the dealership! I told him I did not want anything but a Firebird 400 , 4 Speed on the floor, W/ power nothing! He went through his incoming truck load log and said wait a minute while I check out back. After a few minutes I followed him out back! As I walked up he was driving back with a car covered in cosmo-lien & dust about 1/2” thick he got out came up to me and said this was a silver W/ black vinyl top, Firebird 400 all synchro 3- Speed , hopped back in the car and said watch this , backed the car up about 50 Ft stuck it in first and lit it up smoked the tires back to where I was standing, popped back out of the car and I said “Sold” ! I fell in love with that car from that moment on! I’m sorry I ever sold that car , best car I’ve ever owned! Owned that car for 41 years, painted it 2 times, did 1 valve job, installed a B&M 4 speed , Hydra-matic in it! Blew up 3 of those! Rebuilt the motor put a Muncie 4 speed w/ Hurst shifter, blew the rear end out of it twice! I touched and wrenched on every bolt and screw on that car! The second paint job was a complete restoration! I put 1971-2 fender air extractors in the fenders and a factory trunk spoiler on the trunk lid! Painted it metallic Maroon. Still had the original vinyl roof on it in perfect condition at 41 years old! Got to be some kind of record or something for a Feller! Regards Mike S. …………….. Derek your blue one reminds me of mine! That’s a great video too!

Completely agree about the fun value of a slow car. I had a 1968 Tempest four-door sedan in high school. That car could barely get out of its own way on, say, an Interstate on-ramp, but the kick-down on the Powerglide made such a fuss that it _felt_ like jumping to hyperspace, even if we _were_ only doing about 60 miles an hour by the bottom of the ramp. What the hell, the speed limit back then was still 55 anyway. :)

Driving a slow car fast is definitely the way we do it in Europe. The 2 most fun cars I have owned were my 1982 mini with less than 40hp even on the days it fired on all 4 cylinders and my smart roadster that was mapped to 110hp, both weighed less than 1000kg and that's what made them fun.

Great rapport with these two, more fun to watch than most interview type shows.

Much better setting, then episode one. There is no big ugly microphone on the table, and the sound is much better.

I defy any one to beat the Derek and Tony show. The phrase 'numbers matching' springs to mind'.

Tony Angelo it was great to see you put a Pontiac back in the street freak. I have a 72 Firebird and everyone said LS. But I kept it true with a stroked 468 pontiac. We love the content guys, keep it up.
