The difference is that ballots are being sent out automatically, not by request, that information can be seen on the outside of envelopes, and some states haven’t cleaned up their voter rolls in a long time. A lot of change is needed, but in Colorado when you use a "mail in ballot" you don't have to mail it in. If you chose you can drop it off ahead of time in a special voting box, like a mail box but collected by the election committee, not the USPS. If you trust them to handle your walk in ballot you should trust them to handle your dropped off ballot.

Jimmy Carter in 2005 did a comprehensive study of that subject what they found was if you're part of a big family you are going to automatically the vote the way the rest of your family votes because of mail-in voting you have no privacy,,,duh!

1.) You can always deposit your ballot in a secure county vote box. 2.) You can always hand deliver your ballot to the county Board of Elections. 3.) Mailing your ballot to the county Board of Elections is different than mailing it to an individual P.O. box. Thousands of people will be mailing their ballot to the same physical address. Postal authorities expect to see them. (It shouldn't make any different, but it does.) 4.) In some states you can check on line to see if the vote was received by the county Board of Elections. 5.) Bottom line is vote by mail as early as allowed in your state and if you feel comfortable voting in person or delivering you mail in ballot in person, which is an option, then do so. Your local election office will usually not be too far from your physical address. It's not as if you have to mail it to the capital or out of your district. I'm in Indonesia so I'd have to mail my ballot half way around the world but if I was back home I could simply drive 3 miles to my county election office and drop off my ballot. Don't be intimidated. This is your right and election officials are legally required to facilitate your right to vote.

USPS SUCKS out loud. They lost my tax papers with my SSN and financial info on it. Mailes on 7.2.20 and as of 30 July they have still not received it. I mailed it three towns away from mine. Mail delivery is taking longer and longer regardless of how close you live to the destination. I've read stories where carriers are told to leave the mail on the distribution floor if they don't have time to deliver it in one day. WHO woefully has mismanaged the funding of this company and hires such people that just don't care. That's how it looks to a lot of us.

The Mail where I live has been really really messed up the past month or so. I've been working from home for 6 months and have received my check every single Friday without fail. All of a sudden I'm getting it on Saturday and sometimes Tuesday. My job says it's my local post office. Just crazy how this is happening all of a sudden. I get it there's an increase in volume. But there should be some kind of redundancy this time of year. But there are ways to vote by mail without having to rely on the Postal Service to return your ballot. You could call it a hybrid process of receiving a ballot early through the mail and then returning it in person, before Election Day.

Isn’t it true that statically it is as likely to have a ballot lost for candidate A, as it is for candidate B? So, if you loose 2% of ballots, it will mean that the ratio wouldn’t be affected much. Also, having longer time and a secondary indigo copy ballot you send a week later would reduce the chance from 3% to 0.09%!

I served in the military for 25 years and requested absentee ballots the entire time. Absentee ballots and mass mail in ballots are two entirely different things. Mass mail ballots are when they mail out ballots to everyone on the voter registration. The problem is the registration roles are not accurate. People move, people die, and people fade away. Our household used to include my parents, we took care of them in their final 10 years. They died in their 90s last year and the year before. We received primary ballots for them and were just notified they will be getting general election ballots sent to our house. Mass mail in ballots are wrought with fraud and will create a disaster. If we can go to the grocery store we most certainly can go vote! Masks and distance will work! The Dems see this as another arrow in their quiver to defeat Trump, but cheating is not right and must be stopped.

All mail-in voting must be stamped 1 week prior to the election date and done. Don't make it complicated than it actually is. We've been doing tax filing, car registration and may other stuffs thru mail for years!

In Oregon, the county has ballot collection boxes that you can deposit ballots in on election day. If you use the mail, send it in early. But if you use the county boxes, you can do it on election day. BTW my ballot drop box is at my local library so that is where I vote. As they say in Chicago: Vote early, vote often!

Ya - 400 million votes would be a record. At a vacant 1st floor condo in our building, 2 ballots were laying on the ground near the door - mailed from the D party of Florida. One little story, but FL isn't even seen as a problem state.

The great thing about mai in ballots, at least in my state of California, is that you don't have to send it through the mail, you can fill out the ballot, seal it, sign it and then take it to your polling location and drop it off. My polling location had a specific line just for dropping off mail in ballots which was very fast, it took me less then 3 minutes to cast my vote or in this case drop it off. (2016 election) Knowledge is the best tool you can use. Don't wait till the last minute to find out what your voting requirements will be, be prepared and start early to give yourself peace of mind of what to expect this upcoming election.

That was before COVID. Now I doubt there will be polling stations at all.
