not a madonna... madonna is frontside (one footed lien to tail). backside is a Sean Penn (1 footed body jar). The two tricks were named during the time madonna and Sean Penn were married. Of course going into in from fakie adds another level of Tony.
@briank548611 ай бұрын
you just blew my brain apart. i never heard this before. ive seen handfuls of old contest videos w vert and they called any front hand grab (not always lien) one foot tail tap a madonna. i remember backside body jars but those werent foot off. this thing you wrote challenged what i know and how i see these things (where do you stand on "varial kickflip" when a varial was a grab?) but thats what the generations have just accepted. they discussed this on 9club before! but internet person, thank you for this comment. i just wound up texting tons of old skate people to ask their recollections were. to he honest i cant remember in videos then people doing that except maybe neil blender on the street, never recall seeing that on vert! rambling on, but thank you. your comment woke up a part of my brain i forgot about. tonys part is bananas. given his age and post op, its crazy. that channel is so big, tony has balls of big steel to be doing that shove it stuff over that, inverts....my word. lances doing invert over the channel. at his age is so sick. all of them. all of them

What came from vert goes to street and street has gone to vert, if you add in kickflip stuff, then freestyle enters the mix. The lines and names get blurred. To still be skating as well as he is at his age in insane by itself. To do it after an injury of such magnitude (again at his age) is unprecedented. Anyone that skates or plays sports know just how much an injury later in life sets you back...not just physically but mentally. There's fear and doubt in your body that is almost a bigger challenge than the physical aspect of it. To see Tony charge back into arena so fearlessly and competently is impressive and inspiring. I didn't even think about the SOTY, but after everything he's done, to do this...I support him getting it. It would be an amazing knot on an equally amazing career. I just don't know if it's realistic.

Legacy, nostalgia, and all that aside, I genuinely think Tony's part deserves SOTY on merit. When was the last time a vert skater got SOTY? When was the last time a part largely filmed at one spot won someone SOTY? All the tricks that made the part looked effortless in a way that is inspiring rather than a way that makes it seem like nobody else will ever be *that* good.

In late ‘79 or early 1980 myself & a few friends were skating at Del Mar Skate Ranch & we saw this little kid in the half pipe slam hard & knock his teeth loose from that face plant . We ran over , helped him up ( he was dazed from the impact & blood was all over his jaw & shirt ) and we rushed him down to the office/ pro shop where Grant called his parents to come get him . I found out a day or so later it was a young Tony Hawk. Fast forward a couple decades later and I’m at Tony’s signing of his autobiography at the San Diego air & space museum with my oldest daughter ( she’s also a huge fan of his) and when my turn in line comes to have him sign my copy I relate my involvement at Del Mar to him. He stopped , stood up & reached over & shook my hand & hugged me & signed not only my copy & daughter’s copy of his book , but sent over an Autographed framed picture of him doing an amazing air outta the pool at Del Mar probably right about the end of the park’s life with the words “ Thanks Steve, Tony” written on it . I treasure those items and keep ‘em in my “ Man cave “ , and at almost 64 now myself wish I could do but HALF of what I used to do when I’m out skateboarding still . To see Tony still doing what he once did & even more is just mind boggling . Thanks Tony , for being you 😎👍
