This guy deserves WAY more fame than he has. I'm honored just to live in the same state as this man.

The most amazing part isn't even the playing, it's that every single note rings out the same and has the same volume.

Total economy of movement. He even looks like a statue when he plays.

Nicholas - he was a very clean player, meaning no sloppiness in his picking. Each note was clear and well defined.

One of the most misunderstood or misinterpreted players that ever lived. There's millions of people that loved Tony's guitar playing to the point they try to imitate his style. 80% of them ALWAYS think he's playing as fast as he can when he's clearly not. Those imitators go on to make some of the worst music.

I’ve heard accounts from people that have played Tony’s guitar they say the action is so low most people would buzz the heck out of it. That would explain barely being able to see his hands move compare to Norman Blake or somthing. Fine example of a musician that’s for sure.

He must’ve played it thousands of times! anything you play that much will get easier over time.I’m learning this piece now and at first it looks impossible but when you start playing it and repeating part after part many times it becomes very possible (although haven’t reached his tempo yet) and fun! I play jazz and playing Charlie Parker and John Coltrane is much harder.still this guy is brilliant!

I attended a popular fiddle festival locally a few years ago where there was offered a mandolin workshop. The lady instructor spent 45 of the 50 minutes trying to teach the class of 8 students the opening few bars of this Gold Rush tune. It was a total waste of time. There was no notation or tabs to take away. A couple students packed up their mandos and left. I stuck it out, but took it upon myself to never attend any more of her seminars. Toward the end, she became somewhat rude and irrate. That was what I got from this lesson.
@martymcpeak474810 ай бұрын
I disagree, I learned plenty from watching him play the tune., and in all fairness this is an excerpt from an old video cassette, if I'm not mistaken the video cassette called an intimate lesson with Tony Rice and came with some tabs.. No offense intended but the description doesn't say it's a lesson butI learned the basics of this song by watching Tony play it here.
