NEWCASTLE
Taking its name from the English coastal mining town, Australia’s Newcastle also has a reputation for toughness and heavy toil that began when the convicts were first dropped there to collect coal from the beaches. But it’s also a town with a unique identity, a rich maritime history and more than its share of eccentric characters.

Oh no. Sending coal to Newcastle! Wondered where that came from. Sir Tony elucidates again. Every show I watch makes me love him more. He puts such fun into every moment. Just watched his trek through Cornwall looking in to the smugglers coves and homes. Very riveting. Thanks again Sir Tony.

21:00 the events at the Star Hotel are immortalized by the Australian band Cold Chisel in their song called, appropriately enough, Star Hotel. I'm surprised that the Newcastle earthquake of 1989 (just over 33 years ago) didn't come up on your walk though. It knocked the city around pretty badly as I remember.

Governor Lachlan Macquarie was the first Governor of New South Wales (there were no boring secondary States then like Victoria) to treat Australia as something other than a penal colony. He used talented freed convicts to design and build non penal buildings, and to cultivate the rich soil of the Hawkesbury. This was frowned on by his superiors, but he really was a political and social “father of Australia”. Scotland forever! Lake Macquarie and Port Macquarie are whitefella names for sites named after him.

@10:04 During the early hours of 8 June I-24 and I-21 carried out brief bombardments of Sydney and Newcastle respectively. The purpose of these attacks was to generate what historian David Jenkins has called an "air of disquiet" rather than inflict significant damage on targets in the two cities.[6] Between 00:15 and 00:20 I-24 fired ten shells which landed in the suburbs of Bellevue Hill, Rose Bay and Woollahra. Only one of these shells exploded, and they caused little damage and only injured one person. While the Sydney Harbour defences spotted I-24's gun flashes, the submarine ceased its attack and submerged before the Australian gunners could open fire on it.[7] I-21 began her bombardment of Newcastle two hours after the attack on Sydney. At this time submarine was 9 kilometres (5.6 mi) from Newcastle, and was sailing eastwards as her 140 mm (5.5 in) deck gun was stern-mounted. Prior to the attack the submarine's gun crew had prepared 34 rounds of ammunition; these comprised 26 conventional rounds and eight illumination rounds.[8] The target of the attack was the BHP steelworks in the city. Between 2:15 am and 2:31 am I-21 fired 34 shells at Newcastle. These rounds landed over a wide area, however, and caused little damage.[9] Only one of the 20 conventional shells exploded, causing damage to a house on Parnell Place. Another shell damaged a nearby tram terminus but did not explode. At 2:28 am the guns at Fort Scratchley near the entrance to Newcastle's harbour opened fire on I-21. The submarine's commanding officer, Commander Matsumura Kanji, continued the bombardment for another three minutes as he believed that it would take time for the Australian gunners to locate the submarine. By the time the attack concluded the fort's two guns had fired two salvos each, but none of the four shells struck

Stockton is a peninsula, with the Hunter River at the south and south-west and the Pacific Ocean at the east. On the eastern side are sand dunes and surfing beaches, with numerous shipwrecks at its north, while on the western side there are marshes, where many migratory birds can be spotted. There are numerous spots at Stockton suitable for recreational fishing. For many years, Stockton was linked to Newcastle's central business district at the south by passenger and vehicular ferry services. While there is still a passenger ferry service, vehicular traffic is now connected by the Stockton Bridge, built in 1971. The Aboriginal people, in this area, the Worimi, were the first people of this land. The Worimi people call the area Burrabihngarn.[9] Stockton was settled almost as soon as the foundation of Newcastle in 1797. It was originally called "Pirate Point" as the result of escaped convicts who stole the Norfolk which shipwrecked on the peninsula in 1800. The southern tip of the peninsula, near the northern breakwater is still known as "Pirate Point". For much of the 19th century it served as an industrial and mining base. In 1896 tragedy struck when a gas leak killed 11 people in the Stockton Colliery Disaster. It has become a working-class dormitory suburb during the 20th century, and remains so today for its 4,200 residents. Stocktonians are particularly proud of Dave Sands, a local resident and champion boxer during the years immediately after World War II. Like the Colliery Disaster, the short life of Sands was commemorated by some of the numerous memorials across this seaside village. Stockton Beach is also known as the location of the 1989 rape and murder of Newcastle High School student and Fern Bay resident Leigh Leigh. A play, Blackrock (written by Australian playwright Nick Enright), and also a film of the same name, were inspired by this event. Despite being technically an inner-city suburb of Newcastle, Stockton has a country town atmosphere because of its isolation. It has its own shops, churches, two clubhouses, three pubs, a swimming pool, and a caravan park. It also had a large residential unit for people with developmental disability known as the Stockton Centre,[11] a public primary school and a Catholic primary school. High school students catch the ferry or bus to go to schools in the city of Newcastle. Stockton was traditionally a working-class suburb. The Leigh Leigh murder caused "irreparable psychological damage" to the community of Stockton. The crime has been described as a barely healed wound for Stockton, one that is easily punctured.[14] In recent years, however, the town has begun to re-invent itself with a push for young professionals to move in from other centres such as Sydney. This practice has led to an increase in real estate prices. Stockton includes a district cricket team. It also has an active soccer club, the Stockton Sharks Soccer Club. The Stockton Rugby League club participates in the Newcastle & Hunter Rugby League C Grade competition. Surfing is a big part of Stockton life and is based from the Stockton Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC). Activities around the SLSC include paddle boarding, surf swimming, surf ski, as well as surf life saving beach patrols. Port Hunter 16 Foot Sailing Skiff Club sails on Newcastle harbour. Stockton Beach is 32 km (20 mi) long, stretching from Stockton in the South to Anna Bay at its north-eastern end. In some areas it is as much as 1 km wide and has sand dunes over 30 metres high although at the Stockton end it is at its narrowest. Four-wheel drives are permitted to drive on most areas of Stockton Beach but are excluded from the extreme ends of the beach. Entry to the beach is via Lavis Lane or Anna Bay and a permit needs to be purchased before entering the beach. Drivers must also ensure that they respect the natural habitat of the beach and refrain from driving on the plants and grasses on dune structure.

The ferry journey takes about three minutes. Wheelchair access is available, and you can take a bicycle onto the ferry for free. Driving to Stockton from Newcastle requires following the many signs to Port Stephens that can be found on the main roads. 10:23 Never mind the ballast, the suburb Tony is pointing at is Stockton, Newcastle's OLDEST suburb, founded by Dr. James Mitchell and Mr. Alexander Walker Scott in about 1834, long before Carrington, Wallsend, Mayfield, Tighes Hill or any other of the suburbs existed. Never mind that Stockton did not have a council before 1888, Minmi never EVER had a council prior to the Greater Newcastle act of 1938 that abolished the suburban councils in any case, it is the year Stockton was first established which gives Stockton its rightful claim as Newcastle's First and Oldest suburb, and it's also the place where I was born and lived at until 2nd June, 2001.

@@youtubeviewer7030 Well, Stockton is very much a part of Newcastle's history. Indeed, but for a twist of fate, Stockton might've become the city centre with Newcastle becoming a southern suburb. Indeed, Hereford Street, Stockton may well have been the major commercial street. Instead of suburban homes, there'd be major department stores along the northern and southern sides of the street stretching from Mitchell Street in the east to Fullerton Street at the western end of Hereford Street. The eastern end of Hereford Street, referred to as "The Pines" where the Cenataph stands as a memorial to the fallen of WW1, WW2, Korea, Viet Nam and later wars, was originally touted as a possible shipping port, and a pub was built on the northern corner of Hereford and Mitchell Streets with the view of serving those who would work at that port. But the port never eventuated and the Ocean View Pub ended up as the Ocean View Flats instead(a block of private residences with one of the flats reputed to be haunted).
