Avid Royster Jr. fan here. An important note I've noticed in seeing some of his other videos is that he is well versed in playing in 13/16. He has a piece written in this time signature, and has a drum clinic where he messes around in this time. The takeaway from this is to extensively practice any particular odd time before you become comfortable with it or before you try and improv over it.

I'm glad he said that playing by feel came more natural. That's how I play a lot of the time and it's nice to know an accomplished professional does also and that it's not a bad habit.

Interesting, the way I was able to keep up with the 13/16 timing was to first figure out that it wasn't 6/8 or 7/8 but something in between because the 1 and 7 almost line up but not quite. Once I figured that out, it made perfect sense.

It's not over kill for Tony freaking Royster Jr.
@CtrlSaltDelete9 жыл бұрын
+tyree johnson I think if you use it well; add it to your kit, if you don't or don't need it then leave it out. I like a 5-piece myself because I use the shit out of my toms on certain songs (think tribal inspired grooves, not so much fills), but some drummers can do as much and probably a lot more with a 4-piece. I tend to agree with you that the combination of electric and acoustic is a bit much, but that's based on my style and the fact that I'm not a professional; while Tony Royster Jr. has a very different style and is a professional.

I'm just wondering. If he had to play a 7/8 but with his metronome only marking the 8th notes without accents on each "one", he would probably lose the first beat after playing so many polyrhythms and complicated fills. Or wouldn't him? This would be a great challenge!

I came he for the Tony Royster JR Drum Solo. Then when i herd >1,& 2 &,3 &,4, & 5, & 6 & then >1 &,2 & ,3 &,4 & hell No< Over & Over like a broken record, i was like hell No, that is so Annoying me 1,000%, how can Tony Royster JR, not want 2 smash that thing up. i would throw my Drum Stick's at it. I find that women thing very Annoying, it's almost like that, women from tekken tag tournament 2, Anna my Pleasure see say's that every time you play her or beat the crap out of her, & all the other word's that, she say's in that video game are very ANNOYING. NIna is way Better. Not a Bad Video but Tony Royster's Other Video's are Extreme Mode.
