Well, if Toni has any interest in the 'why', even after so many years I can answer with pretty good accuracy because if you know, you know, (i.e., been there done that). Daryl was most likely a high functioning, undiagnosed autistic (i.e. what used to be called Asperger's). So high masking that it's missed and this was at a time when no one knew it existed. His pal Brian Wilson is almost certainly one as well. As am I - diagnosed in my mid 50's.

Men should bare their souls to women, as if they are God in heaven, or Jesus. What a loss that we don't confess all of our faults and insecurities to a woman. I'm sure they would still love and respect us. It's not like we have to live up to some stereotype of what a man is supposed to be. We can be weak. We can cry. We can jerk off to all kinds of porn. Women are so amazing, they love us drunk, stoned, fat, bald. Women love us when we gamble away our life savings, have affairs. I mean, who needs to talk to a God when we have the wife or our lady friend. Women have the capacity to handle all of a man's thoughts and weaknesses and frailties. Thank GOD for WOMEN.

On Thanksgiving Day 1974 I was working at WGNC in Gastonia, NC. I was eating my Thanksgiving dinner and had just started a 15 minute religious tape at 5 p.m. I got a phone call from a woman who said she was Toni Tennille and she and her boyfriend Daryl Dragon were on a tour to promote their recording. They were just below the station at Howard Johnson’s. Daryl opened the curtain and saw the station. She asked to bring a record and bio. They came. She was very animated. Daryl, wearing his captain’s cap was very quiet. The record, The Way I Want to Touch You and Disney Gurls was on A&M records. I told her that was The Carpenter’s label. They hadn’t yet met them but Karen 0:15 and Richard were coming in to record a few times. They did get to meet George Harrison rehearsing for a tour in another studio. I played both sides of the record and interviewed them. Toni did most of the talking. It was a fantastic 45 minutes. Toni wrote me a handwritten thank you note dated New Year’s Day 1975. In February I was driving and heard a dj on WBT Charlotte say,”That was The Captain and Tennille and Love Will Keep Us Together. Sadly, I’ve lost the thank you note. They seemed to be a very wonderful, talented couple. I’m so glad we crossed paths on that Thanksgiving Day.

This hits home with me. I was raised by two loving, outgoing parents and my ex-husband was raised by two very cold parents. His parents stayed together because they were Catholic, certainly not because they loved one another. My ex was jealous of my family's closeness. I never felt like I was married because he avoided responsibility by hanging out in his old neighborhood bar. Eventually, I left him and took my sons with me. It was easy to be alone because most of the time I was alone and resenting it. I'm a non-drinker so we were quite opposite.

Fun Fact: Toni sang background vocals on Pink Floyd's 1979 release "The Wall". The tracks were “The Show Must Go On” and “Waiting for the Worms”.

She also did background vocals on Elton John's "Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me".

At 6 years old, I could clearly see that Captain was quiet, shy, reserved, and uncomfortable in front of the camera. I remember watching them on TV and literally seeing and realizing how uncomfortable he was.

I’m 68 and remember when Carmen Dragon was the conductor of the Glendale Symphony Orchestra. I was in third grade. At the school I went to we listen to them playing once a week. Oddly enough I have always found music very interesting yet I’ve never learned to play any instrument.

This video came out on my KZbin feed and it reminded me that I once had Darryl as a passenger on an airport shuttle I drove for a couple of years in the early 90s. He spoke with me a little since I usually started small talk conversations with some of my passengers.

He had some sort of autism...Aspergers or something. Highly functioning and hyper-focused on music. David Byrne is another example.

Man, did I have a crush on Toni Tennille back in the 1970s! So did the rest of the 2d Marine Air Wing at Cherry Point NC. The damn near perfect Southern woman as the Southern boys put it! Wow! And I remember that performance clip they showed as background very well! It was on "Midnight Special" or one of the similar shows of the time and it REALLY impressed me. No glitz, no glam, just Toni in a plain top and jeans and the Captain dressed casual, same with the backup singers. Just making great music and nothing else. Good times!

Wow. Much respect to Toni Tenille for her kind, loving, and honorable ways. Daryl had issues that were just behind her knowledge and/or ability to deal with. Some commenters have written that he was a high functioning autistic man. It must have been so hard for them, especially her as she wanted that romantic aspect. I understand that very well. When you're with someone who doesn't want to hold hands but you do, it's a terrible feeling. She looks so great at her age, too. Poor guy missed out on a lot of good feelings. And she, too. 😢🙏

@ there's a whole story about it ...he was very closeted though...remember at that time period it was not accepted in the industry. He was not overtly gay...Tennille mentioned it several times in some of her memoirs. He was gay...he was not obvious flamboyant gay.

Very sad ...so much for the wedding vows of "for better or worse." Since she knew that he was simply all about his music, content to live in his coccoon (he was quite possibly autistic, as others have noted), and was NOT "in love" with her (and incapable of expressing that emotion), she NEVER should have married him. Geting married "for a tax advantage" is a TERRIBLE reason to marry -- and any "marriage" built solely on that platform is doomed to fail. And her thinking that she "could change him" is yet another repeat of the other TERRIBLE MISTAKE so many women make ... always wanting their man to be somebody differet and constantly striving to change him instead of accepting -- and respecting -- who is is, as he is. All the women in the audience gasped, disapproved of, and found fault with the "cold and detached" person Daryl Dragon was ... yet not even Toni Tennille ever claims he was abusive or mean or that he ever maltreated her. He was simply detached and insular and incapable of giving her what she says she wanted. It didn't make him a monster or a bad guy -- just different. Toni knew what she was getting into, and was happy to accept it as the price for their "musical magic, fame, and wealth."
