Beautiful solo! Not crazy speed or uncanny chops, just a purely musical solo that was thought out, inspirational, satisfying and so emotionally sound! Gotta love Tony Williams!

Yes!! Always inspirational to me. And so dynamic and melodic. I LOVE that. I am however not sure if it was thougth out, I believe (could be wrong), that he was just composing "on the spot". Nevertheless, such and amazing solo.

@ No! You are quite right! Tony’s solos always sound like he’s composing on the spot! Couldn’t have said it better!

“Composes on the spot”. You’re absolutely right about that! I think that’s what I love best about TW. It’s like there’s something important and meaningful he has to say with his instrument. Thanks for sharing!

He was so earthy, grounded yet on the edge. And as you say. You get the impression like he really had something to say on the instrument each time. Such a unique presence. On of the all time greats for sure. 😀❤️

I’ve only watched this about a dozen times! Lol We studied this solo in my lesson yesterday, taking ideas from TW’s use of the Swiss Army Triplet. There’s so much to absorb here. I keep coming back!
@sturla7523 сағат бұрын
Fantastic! !Yes, those swish army triplets he uses quite a lot in his soloing. And how his toms (and snare) are so perfectly tuned for his way of melodic playing. You just get absorbed into it.

Forgot about Tony's chops with the ability to move effortlessly through the rudiments; just listen to this man's melodicism on the drums and his use of dynamics to create a piece of music on the drums. He was incredible.

Turned the drum kit into a piano! Love the batter heads on the bottom of the toms, very 80's!

Yeah! So melodic and he is one of the reasons I’ve digging those black dot heads lately.

Yes, I really dig this period from 1989 - this and the New York concert from same year is just amazing!! I remember I saw that on TV at the time (and I was more of a rocker, but was just floored with what I heard. So inspirational). Hope all is well with you too Todd!

@@sturla75 100% agree Sturla!.......I have watched that N.Y. concert sooooooooooo many times, LOL!!!!!.. ..We certainly live in different musical times NOW... B U T, these archieve fantastic footages/concerts/videos remind us of ALL & WHY the greats NEED to be studied/understood and, repected ALL THE TIME for their MASSIVE drumming contributions to THIS day for all of us to have learned by.......My old (late Russ Moy) drum teacher in N.J. was great friends with Buddy Rich, Louie Bellson, Ed Shaughnessy, Bernard Purdie, etc etc, etc.....on and on and on....... I am so thankful for his studies, insight, talent and knowledge he gave me to this day & EVERDAY!!!!!!!...Have a super day Sturla!

@@toddwalkerdrumstudio Yeah, so cool to stumble upon these historical footages. And the uniqueness they all had back then, as opposed to how it is now. But we can still be so inspired about them - I mean I just so often think of Tony when soloing and for his earthiness, and explosiveness and dynamics. Also great hearing that about about your old drum teacher. Wow!! My warmest to you Todd!! :-)

Influenced by his contemporaries (Max Roach, Art Blakey, Elvin Jones, Miles Davis ,etc.) Tony developed a technique and style that engulfed the music. He was part of the new age of jazz rock that propelled power and improvisation at his level. We all stood at attention when he played and soloed. Drummer's will be influenced by his talent for a " Lifetime."❤

One of the all times greats!! I unfortunately never got to see him play. A true artist on the drums!

Really nice! No chops; the drumming is not a speed contest the kids don't understand this I just want to worry around the drums fast as I can bang everything very sad this is excellent! Melody on the drums rules very few drummers understand that a solo is a song!
@sturla753 күн бұрын
Excatly! It is not a contest! It is about creating music - no matter what instrument you are soloing on.
