I was around 8 years old when I met Zale. He was visiting some relatives across the street . My dad took me over there and I got Zales autograph ..To my good friend jimmy. .Tony Zale. I recall how friendly he was. years later I marvled at his excellent hand writing...

Underrated middleweight. I learned a little about him from the movie "Somebody up there likes me." GGG reminds me of him a bit, He really beat the hell out of Garziano in that clip.

According to director Robert Wise, Paul Newman (playing Graziano) was hesitant to fully engage Zale during rehearsal, fearing that Zale might reflexively knock him out if Newman inadvertently hit him too hard.

He is not under rated to boxing historians. Probably one of the best two or three body punchers ever. He was a man of steel. He taught me and other young people the fundamentals of boxing in the 1960’s when he worked for the Chicago Park District and the CYO. He was a very proud man and a very kind man. I was fortunate to know him. Sadly there are no films of the first two Graziano fights. I’m always amused when some guy has a KZbin of the greatest rounds. Maybe they mean the greatest rounds on film. The first rounds of the first two Zale Graziano fights certainly rival Hearns Hagler. My great uncle was at the second fight in Chicago Stadium.

He lived by loving others and serving others. Self-Sacraficing LOVE; Charity. 1 Corinthians 13:13, "... faith, hope, and Charity; but the greatest of these is, Charity." THANKS again, Rich. Thanks for posting!! My mom was in the same Portage, Indiana nursing home with The Champ. Even with his health problems when he shook my hand he almost broke it. Man was he strong, even as a older man!!! I use to tell the nurses there ,do you know who this man is??? They would say we heard he was famous. I said he was a world champion. Thanks!!! Man, the boxers you bring you back to us. You take me to when I was a kid reading about them in magazines, books, and watching on cableless TV. Another amazing video! What struck me harder than anything else about this story, is that his mother, after his father's death, never remarried. The reason being that she was abused by her stepmother as a child and did not want to bring a man into her home who might be abusive to her children! When the Bible says to honor your mother and father, it's mothers like Zale's they were talking about!!!

Two of the greatest Middleweights of all time, Graziano and Zale. Three of the greatest fights of all time, Graziano and Zale. The only fighter Rocky seriously trained for, Zale. Rocky was a street fighter, who threw the hardest right hand in Middleweight History. I heard about Zale from my Father, who grew up in Chicago, used to watch Zale train at a CYO club there. According to my father Tony on a typical training day would knock out 5 Heavyweights, no joke, he was the MAN OF STEEL. Everybody knows Zale was Polish, but Al Weil an old time manager and promoter at Madison Square Garden told me Zale's mother made the best Italian food he ever ate, and that she was part Italian...

I never saw the third fight of that trilogy, one of the most famous in middleweight history. Another ref might have stopped the fight with Graziano falling over as he was wiping his gloves, but Cavalier had a "go out on your shield' attitude. Great stuff Rich, as always.

My grandfather from Poland was working in the coal mines in Scranton Pennsylvania when Germany invaded Poland 1939 September 1st then the Russians September 17th. He Try to go back to Poland to fight alongside his brothers he could not make it back so he joined the American Military. Served 6 years on the battleship North Carolina as a Navy corpsman during the second war. The Polish people are the toughest most faithful people I ever met they fought the Germans and the Russians at the same time. When the second war was over all the Allied Forces betrayed Poland like communist Russia occupy their country from 1945 till 1989. Poland fought for 50 years for their independence you could never break the Polish people they only kneel to God. Rest in peace Grandpa you'll always be my hero Paul Peter zaleski 🇵🇱 🇵🇱

I missed the last few episodes, for some reason. Watching them (great ones, as usual), I went over your body of work, Rich, took a look at all your past videos, available here. I'm really amazed. You have, for anyone curious of it, a great, extremely well presented, richly diversified panorama of boxing history, here. Absolutely amazing work! About Tony Zale, I think he's so underrated today. My hunch is, at his best, before the war, he would have beat many of the guys we consider great that came after him. He's in the top crop of mw in history. A big P.S. An idea: have you ever thought of putting your texts in writing? Publishing and selling books is very difficult, today. But selling through (or off the base of) a site such as this one, can be a great way to do so. I can picture a beautiful coffee table book with your comments and some pics, for instance. Just a thought. Honestly, what you do is so great, it has such a pro tone to it, that to me, you deserve more than youtube (not that I want you off it! lol). Have you tried to send some sample of your stuff to ESPN for instance, or to some other well financed boxing outlet? I can't imagine no one would be interested in using your talents, out there, for good money. Just one more thought from an old guy - maybe out of touch with his time...

I'd read about the Zale v Graziano trilogy, that was pretty much all I knew about Zale, but after just 20 mins I know a whole lot more. What a fighter, a man of steel indeed, win or lose he gave it all. I really love his guys spirit...he gets stopped after his opponent lands 37 unanswered punches and complains, 'a man should be allowed to die for his title'. I like some of his other quotes too.... 'That's the trouble with people today, everybody wants to get, nobody wants to give'. Its a real shame he lost 4 years, probably around his prime, to the war, surely he'd have achieved so much more if that wasn't the case. Great video, thanks Rich!

I love this channel. I have been a boxing fan for 53 years. Boxed a little while myself, but moved to another state that didn’t have boxing. I kept my heavy bag and speed bag, but it was never the same. We had a couple Junior Olympic Champions come out of our little town of 3,000 people, before I moved. I’ve have watched a few boxing channels but they were always hit and miss deals. This place is the Champion of the World on the history of this sweet science of pugilists.

Fantastic Documentary here RTFH If memory serves ( I am half way through the video as I type this ), Zale was discovered in a nursing home with Dementia and staff had no idea who he was. I believe he had lost the anility to talk until someone said “Graziano”. Zale reacted immediately Keep em coming RTFH. Absolutely Fantastic

Zale was going to play himself in the movie "Somebody Up There Likes Me", the story of Rocky Graziano. Unfortunately, Zale couldn't learn how to do movie punches where you miss the other guy but make it look like you hit him. He knocked out Paul Newman (who played Rocky) and they recast the Zale part with Court Shepard, another former middleweight who was an expert in playing fighters in movies and resembled Tony Zale. Shepard appeared in a lot of boxing movies like "Champion" where he fought Kirk Douglas and "Right Cross" where he fought Ricardo Montalban among many others.

I’m a massive fan of your channel very detailed videos and I can watch them all night, Tony zale was a great fighter R.I.P. Please do a Jersey Joe Walcott video, I know he was heavyweight champ but unfortunately not a lot of people know his story he started out at 165lbs and ended up being heavyweight champion after 5 or 6 attempts at the time being the eldest at 37! Suffered through the Great Depression and segregation working job to job to feed his massive family. And one of the most iconic scenes in boxing with him being the ref, Ali vs Liston 2 the phantom punch, so much to mention I’d be here all night literally. I box myself and he’s one of the first boxers I ever saw fight, it was against joe Louis the first fight where he was robbed and dropped joe twice and was dancing around the ring throwing bombs over 15 rounds. I loved his style and footwork and it inspired me to box him and Ali. I ended up with 25 fights as an amateur lost 7 I’m now on the way to having my pro debut hopefully this year. Anyway I did a little research and his record was broken on the night I was born 5/11/94 by big George foreman vs Micheal moorer to break his record at 45 years old. I also have the same initials JW ( but his real name was Arnold Raymond cream. So I’d really really appreciate if you could make a video there’s nothing detailed on KZbin at all it’s a shame. R.I.P champ.

Great Post what a tough man he was working in the steel Mills after retiring then coming back to eventually win the world title losing it then coming back when he was past his best and producing that brutal knockout of rocky I think the phrase teak tough was made for Tony zale .on top of a Great career what an upstanding decent man served his country during his prime and gave back to the kids as a trainer for no money you don't get people like that anymore.

Your videos are so bitter sweet. Bitter in the sense that the fight game will never be what it was. Life is too soft now and alot of real boxing knowledge has been lost. There are no real trainers left and society is too soft and doesnt breed these sort of tough guys anymore. Sweet in the sense it connects me to the past and so many good memories of great fights, great friends and great conversations. Thank you for your videos-they are brilliant.

Tony Zale always looked old, even when he was young haha. It’s absolutely criminal the first 2 Graziano fights were never recorded. A massive loss to boxing

I think it was 1984, Sean Curtain then the head of the Chicago CYO invited me to the CYO box offs is when I met Tony Zale and Angelo Dundee at a Polish resturant in Chicago after the event. Sean Curtain was a great guy.
