And now, a Q&A with Tonya Harding (now Tonya Price!) following a special screening of I, TONYA at the San Francisco Alamo Drafthouse.

Tonya is a natural-born world shaker. She crushed the skating establishment and in 1991 she became the greatest female skater in history.
@lsrasr1584 жыл бұрын
zonkster909, don't think I would go that far in calling Tonya the greatest female skater in history in 1991. That was definitely far and away her best year winning both US nationals and Skate America. I would say in 1991 she was the 2nd best technical skater in the world behind Midori Ito. Scott Hamilton actually said that at the 92 Albertville Olympics. To this day, Tonya's and Midori's triple axels are the highest, most powerful triple axels ever landed by women.
@genednomyar33832 жыл бұрын
@@lsrasr158 I agree with much of your post, and I thank you for your voice of reason. However, Tonya's triple axel was always tilted in the air. I think her best ones might have been performed at 1991 Skate America when she did two, one in the Original Program, and one in the Long. It's so sad that she was doing that well in late 1991, but by 1992 had competely lost the ability to land her triple axel in competition. And let's give Mirai Nagasu a little credit; she actually landed her triple axel in the Olympics, and I thought it was beautiful and terrific!!! Also, let's not forget that Nancy Kerrigan was a very capable technician. Regardless of the scoring results, Nancy's short program at the 1992 Olympics was definitely the best. And I think her inability to land her triple lutz in the long there was due to her beautiful - but very uncomfortable to skate in - white dress; I think she had to pay a high price (and I don't mean monetery) to wear it.

I cringed when she spoke of people making her feel badly when they criticize her abilities. I look at this way: she qualified for two Olympics got 4th and 8th place finishes, a world silver medal and 1 national title(should be 2). What are the accomplishments of people who are critical of her?

For me, the question regarding the perceived displacement between women being judged on costuming and athleticism versus men who to the interviewer, do not... she is mistaken and Tonya never answered. It was true in her time, as well. Men get equally judged on costuming and athleticism. Rudy Galindo, in addition to inconsistency, was frequently downed because his jumps were not as powerful. Commentators discussed it, it showed in the marks. The same goes for Johnny Weir later on. Also, if they had frilly costumes -- forget it. Even though figure skating is considered a feminine sport, American judges still want guys who are athletic and presents as a "dude". The exact same is true on the women's side: Tonya was not a graceful ballerina and that didn't work for the USFSA. They are very clear on wanting defined gender roles.
@varcade82 жыл бұрын
Rudy and Johnny had the best and most difficult jumps early in their careers while being held down by judges. Later, the value of quads held Johnny back, but they both were the best technicians while scored too low.
@baritonebynight2 жыл бұрын
What you are speaking about is the homophobia in men's figure skating. So many top male skaters are openly gay (in years past were closeted while still skating) and that should be something that is embraced instead of something to be ashamed of.

I love tonya but for me personally this interview didn't carry over so well. On one hand, I like how you can tell she is at peace with herself and so comfortable in her skin but on the other hand, she was unable to stay on topic and I think it's probably just from no one listening to her for so long that now she has this platform to do it and has so much to say that she easily goes off on a tangent.

She also got her husband to debilitate the knee of a fellow skater by hitting it. We know this because it was concluded that Nancy's skating practice schedule was in her handwriting. She has a lot of chutzpah to not want her son to be hurt emotionally, but she didn't give a damn about Nancy's emotional AND physical pain. Im not a huge fan of Kerrigan's & rooted for Tonya mostly cause she was the underdog; but even they must play fair. She, not Jeff, had motive. The attack just happened to coincide with the competition, minus Nancy, which she went on to win gold guaranteeing her a spot @ the Olympics, minus Nancy. How dare she continue to lie all these yrs later. Nancy doesn't care, but Tonya owes her an apology. It's just the right thing to do. if course, she did it. 😡

@genednomyar33832 жыл бұрын
She did just fine when she trained. She received great scores when she skated well. In 1991, she won the U.S. championship, silver at Worlds and gold at Skate America. She landed her triple axel four times at national and international competitions that year. She could of medaled at the 1992 Olympics, & maybe even earned the gold, but she stopped training properly, gained weight, and never landed the triple axel again in competition. Besides that, the other jumps in her programs suffered as well. She missed the triple axel in both her short and long programs in the 1992 Olympics, but she still got 4th. In 1994, both her programs at the Olympics were appreciably worse than at the 1992 Olympics. She skated well at '94 Nationals and won without her triple axel. She skated very badly at the 1994 Olympics and ended up well off the medal stand. And just because Nancy didn't have the triple axel, she had everything else in her arsenal and was known as a powerful jumper and skater. There was no contest between Tonya and anyone else at the '94 Olympics. She took herself out of the competition with a very poor short program. The contest was always between Nancy and Oksana, and that is another story.

@@genednomyar3383 THANK YOU! I was really young when all this went down. I was 9 when Nancy Kerrigan had her knee bashed in and that was upsetting to me and so many others, even if Tonya didn't do it herself. I just don't think Tonya was ever as graceful a skater as her competitors were. She might have been the first female to land a triple axle in competition, but her performances weren't as artistic and graceful as the other women and that's what held her back the most and don't even get me started on her makeup and hairstyles, lol!
