Ridiculous. A very dishonorable decision by a so called honorable judge. Especially if it went down as portrayed in the film. If she truly could have had a choice between serving a year and a half instead. Cruel and unusual punishment is what it is.

No, it wasn't. She knew about the planned assault, in which her ex- used money from the USFSA to finance it and pleaded no contest to felony hindering of the investigation. She could have gone to prison.

Lasna34 Tonya had nothing to do with the attack. It was all her ex-husband's fault. If you watch the film, her husband wanted to send Kerrigan threats as a form of psychological warfare. She was aware of this and wrote down Kerrigan's location. Tonya really had nothing to do with the attack. She did not deserve that punishment.

RajaMCool AGREED!!!!
@IVB2256 жыл бұрын
RajaMCool exactly those words you used "if you watch the film." It was a FILM, a story created and mostly from Tonya's point of view! If you've followed her over the years, you'd clearly see that her POV has not been trustworthy at all. Everyone knows that biopics/based on "true" story films are NOT the entire truth, sometimes very far from it. You don't point someone to a MOVIE if you're trying to prove your point about exact truth! That's merely for entertainment. There's actual reports that one can read about that time. No one knows exactly what happened and we probably never will know the entire truth. I remember that time well and have read up on it extensively since then from various sources; there was so much more to it and many doubts! The one main thing I honestly can take away about the situation is that truth is subjective to Tonya - her story has changed multiple times, as someone has said! Not just during the investigation when she may have been been afraid to speak up or under pressure. She's made things up long after that even when she didn't have to! Also, she wasn't as cheated by the system as she claims; not to that extent anyway. She was allowed to go to the Olympics not once, but TWICE! The U.S Skating Association even allowed her to go during that messy time of the Kerrigan attack investigation. And they had every right to keep her from going given as she wasn't cleared yet (and never actually was). I feel bad and I'm sorry for what she went through during her upbringing and marriages, but ultimately, she worked against herself. Not EVERYTHING is someone else's fault as Tonya has complained about for years with no remorse. She has been given some amazing chances in her life but she's always squandered them away! THAT'S the saddest part.

We all have done something in our life that we regret. We all handle our issues differently and I believe Tonya had obstacles that normally aren’t dealt with on a daily basis. In my opinion she’s a true survivor and a talented athlete. She would be a great coach.

Steven Valencia . I know..true survivor lol. Tonya screwed her life up all by herself !! She was the solicitor in that attack. There are other figure skaters that were poor and sacrificed being away from their families ( different countries even) . All of us have a story, but we do this commit fraudulent crimes because we had a hard life. She really thought Nancy would beat her so she wanted her taken out. She is a dirty player. I don't understand why people feel sorry for her and make excuses for what she did. . ..."oh poor Tonya didn't have previledges like Nancy" boo hoo. Tonya could of lived a fantastic life finacially and felt accomplished if she just practiced and did her best.., whether she placed 1,2 or 3 she would of had sponsors snd brand deals .etc. as she was the favorite . She railroaded her self!!! Even today she gives off a sketchy vibe.

well, she did came across as trailertrash you know with that husband of hers, she lacked a lot of grace what comes with the profession, and i see that that grace has improved a lot in this video, so i see where they are coming from
@mynvision6 жыл бұрын
If you look at older videos of her when she was 15, you will see that she already had the grace. She was given some bad advice later on, and focused too much on her jumps. She really didn't have enough of a proper support system behind her. It sucks to have all this talent that would have helped to her get out of her situation, but add to that a skating association that was against her, despite her talent. There was no way she could have ever won with so many people in power against her. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rJ24hnejo5WfrNE

It's ridiculous that Tonya was banned! Wasn't Michael Vic (who murdered and horrifically abused and tortured dogs) allowed to return to football?! This girl suffered from abuse and neglect her entire life unlike the other skaters who had loving, normal childhoods which made her success incredible. Tanya was the black sheep of figure skating - the underdog and I wish she could have continued skating and been able to live a normal life. The skating association truly screwed her. Since their decision to ban her I've never watched figure skating.

She cannot have anything to do with anybody who *is* competing. She can't be a coach. She can't be a choreographer. She can't design costumes. She can't even drive the Zamboni.
@jayoungr6 жыл бұрын
sbe79: I don't doubt you're right, but then how was she able to do this in 1999? Is it because this wasn't an ISU event?
@sbe796 жыл бұрын
ISU events are the ones like the Olympics, the World Championships or any of the minor level ones in between (Skate America, Rostelecom Cup, Nebelhorn Trophy, etc). This was a pro event. Those have nothing to do with the ISU. For the first 5 years of the skating boom after the 1994 Olympics, nobody would sign her to an event -- even though she had been technically eligible. So, any of the Riders competitions, the World Pro events, Ice Wars... all of those events, she was qualified for. The promoters opted to woo Nancy Kerrigan to all of them. It took until 1999 when ESPN signed her to this competition that anyone would take a chance on her. She'd been out of it for half a decade and still managed to show a glimmer of the talent she had. 3T, 3S, 2A programs. Not consistent, but she demonstrated that she hadn't been just smoking Camels and lazing about for 5 years. She was actually still working on maintaining some of her skills. Unfortunately, her programs were still a combination of terrible elevator saxophone and generic dance beats. Music that was cheap to license for network competition airings. Nothing on that level changed. She, STILL, unfortunately could not afford the better music and choreography.

Even though she took a few spills there, she did pretty damned good for coming back after 5 years out of competing. I hope she could someday come back and coach for the US Team. She was dealt a shitty deal from the get-go in her personal home life. Her big mistake was marrying that loser Goloology(sp?). He was the one and another low life accomplice friend, who came up with the plot to injure Kerrigan.
@gisazurnieden90585 жыл бұрын
It's Gillooly ;) Yes, that was Tonya's big mistake. But IMHO no wonder, as she was abused by her mother and grew up to mistake violence and abuse for love. But thanks to whoever is up There, she seems gto have broken the cycle of abuse and is reasonably happy now with her husband and her son. And I agree, under this circumstances and considered how nervous and afraid she looked, she did Pretty good here.

I’ve always liked her music choices. It matched her dynamic skating style. To me, that is artistic in itself. Light, classical music doesn’t suit Tonya. Many of the judges back then misjudged Tonya because they didn’t see that. Not every skating champion is a dainty balletic skater.
@CSmith-mm3kg6 жыл бұрын
I believe Tanya got a raw deal. That judge took away her livelihood, hopes, and dreams. He took his position and used it to mentally and emotionally break her. Her sentence was much harsher than the ones who conspired and carried out hurting Nancy Kerrigan received. 18 months to 2 years VS a lifetime judgment in a prison only another skater would understand. I feel for her even to this day.

I agree. Banning her completely from skating - not even being allowed to coach or even work at a rink - took away the only thing she knew how to do. She'd never held down a full time job due to her skating commitments; she didn't even finish high school as she'd dropped out to focus on skating. The judge literally took away her only means of making a living. And don't get me started on how they stripped her of her medals she'd won BEFORE the attack - she won those fair and square, and taking them away was just petty spite, not justice.

If anyone was stupid (and probably delusional), it was Shawn Eckardt, who couldn't stop bragging about the attack which is why the whole Thing blew up in the first place. And, like I wrote in my other commentary under this Video, after having a good look at the known Facts, I am convinced that she didn't mastermind the attack. If she acted seemingly "stupid" /irrational, it was rather out of stubbornness (which isn't so strange considering her upbringing) or out of fear (e.g. of Jeff Gillooly)/confusion/emotional turmoil. I'm no totally gullible and uncritical fan (well, I got to be Kind of a fan of hers and I DO sympathize with her, but I see her good AND bad sides), I know she isn't perfect, but she is not that stupid, "trainwrecky" Monster some People make her to be.

I love Bonaly and Tonya's interactions. Both girls were two of the best athletes, when it comes to executing the hardest jumps, etc., & both were underrated bc the judges made it more abt looks, elegance, grace, femininity and artistry over technical abilities. Yet, the toughest things to execute they were the best at! As much as I love artistry and in most cases value it over technical skill (i.e. with writing or painting etc.), when it comes to skating it IS a sport and competition FIRST...clearly those doing the most difficult moves should be rated higher then, but with skating that wasn't the case. In basketball, would they rate a person who dribbles the ball artistically higher than a slam dunker? No. But bc skating is 'pretty' and yes--like dancing in many aspects--they cared more of looks, style, elegance and artistry. But as a sport that all should have come second. Any girl with the right hook-ups and dough could hire a great stylist, get an amazing choreographer, wear the best cosmetics to look flawless, but not any girl in the US could execute the triple like Tonya, or perform a friggin' BACKFLIP to perfection like Bonaly! Instead of being commended for her unnatural abilities, Bonaly was docked points. Makes 0 sense.

She is very emotionally fragile. It seems if she gets the first jump right she gets more confident as she goes on. If she doesn't get it right it unravels for her. It's a shame.

Tonya Harding is a better skater than Kristi Yamaguchi. Had this whole scandal not occurred, Tonya would have gone on to win the gold in the olympics. Kristi was actually jealous of Tonya's skating ability and often spread rumors about her during competitions.

Tonya was far superior to Kristi AND Nancy Kerrigan. Much stronger, faster, sharper.

her 'trashy' less than privileged upbringing followed her everywhere... The judges took note of it, although I am sure some were trying to help her. The cast of I, Tonya was brilliant. The film as a whole was pretty good.

Wrong Olympics. But Tonya didn't have a chance in hell to medal in '94. Her coach and choreographer cleverly screwed her. And whoever allowed or wanted her '94 short in that final look was crazy. Tonya had to have a 3+3 jumping pass in her long. As Oksana and Nancy. And her short she has proper Olympic choreography standards into big jumping passes. But not so in her long. Cleverly screwed. And she was in major strife at home. Probably couldn't even think but so logically.

Such a shame what happened to her. She is a great skater and made history. They can never take that away from her.

If she would have anything to do with the attack, she wouldn't be able to be there. She's a brave soul. Go Tonya! :)

I felt bad for her struggling through the program. She always had the tenacity but unfortunately not the wealthy parents to back her and her tough upbringing shrouded her grace on the ice. Tragic story.
Still don’t think she had anything to do with the attack on Nancy. Whether you believe that or not, a lifetime ban from skating was a cruel punishment. She was one of the best, and skating was her world

I feel like this performance is much better artistically than her 1991-1994 work. Idk I feel like she had the best footwork here and before 1991 since after 1991 she focused so much on triple axel that it was kinda left out to me( it wasn't bad but I feel like her 1886-1990 work and here are better artistically and that there is much more footwork between jumps)

Wow, she looks really scared. There's a deer-in-the-headlights look on her face throughout the program. Sad.

but yet she skated. That took a lot of Courage IMHO.
