As a left hander fighting from a traditional stance, I always relied on my left hooks. I was always able to generate much power inside with it. However, the flat footed hook to the body with the weight shifted hook to the head is a move I wished I had years ago. That rib tap will drop your opponents hands every time, and followed with a powerful hook to the head can be a devastating move. Good stuff.

Hey Tony, even if it’s been said numerous times: thanks for all your videos. You really teach the sweet science of boxing, mindset included, and that’s awesome! I have a question on the lead hook and the knee rotation. If you look at some boxers, like Canelo, their lead leg is solidly fixed on the ground while they throw their lead hook. Is it just a preference there, or do you loose power while rotation the knee?
@Tony_Jeffries4 жыл бұрын
Thank u Alex, means a lot - rotate hip and foot mate not knee :) but your knee will move
@calchuchesta31962 жыл бұрын
@@Tony_Jeffries Conversely, I’ve seen it said that rotating solely on the back foot and keeping the left foot still, as opposed to pivoting it, gets a little more speed and power on that lead hook. Is that true?

I couldn't throw a left hook from age 17 to 29 because I had torn off a tendon in my shoulder and it would dislocate , so I had to spar with it taped up if I wanted to stand in traditional stance. Well didn't take long for guys to figure out i had no left hook ! Don't recommend it. But it did force me to get good at switching leads , Got it fixed and spent few years learning to trust it and how to throw them and was surprised how many different ways people threw them and why. Great series, glad i found it . Learning new things even though I'm 57
@MonkeyLiggaScrumptiousNan2 ай бұрын
Yeah hooks are the most versatile punch and lots of different good ways to throw them imo. Couldn’t imagine fighting without being able to throw left hooks, that would be an unbearably frustrating disadvantage in every single fight. By far my favourite punch if I’m honest love throwing a crisp hook, followed by the crack sound.
@fuddrucker744 жыл бұрын
I'm tall but like fighting in close. I use a lot of head movement til I get inside then roll/dip my shoulders and use my elbows to steer you where I want you. If you throw a crisp jab (i work everything off my jab), and change levels you can get them shook and not knowing if your 1-2 is jab head, right cross head, or jab head, right cross body. So, after getting them thinking about the fundamentals I get in close and roll left. I'll try to put my right shoulder on their right shoulder and be chest to chest. I'm naturally loaded hard, down, left. When I throw the lead left hook to the body because I'm 6.4" I come up with it a bit and try to sink the bottom right rib into their liver. If you get everything right. When you come in you get them to back peddle. I try to follow up with another left hook to the head. Great video, man. I appreciate them. Thank you, Sir.

It really is one of the, if not the hardest lead punches to throw without moving to set it up. Throwing it cold also feels like it's weak, Tony is right in demonstrating that even though it can be a lead punch, there must be some type of 'isometric preload'. I like the way Trinidad used to extend his lead arm out, then snap it back using the elbow as a spring to propel the forearm back towards the target (all very quickly), another way of getting velocity and snap together with a torso twist and weight transfer. I prefer to dip my right shoulder, put weight onto my lead foot, crouch a little as if in a slip and then twist and snapback, transferring weight from my front foot onto my back foot which creates more power and snap and is great for setting up a 3 -2 combo (left hook, right cross or other ).

Thanks mate, yeah Trinidad was the man

When I was a kid - my boxing coach taught me to step over with my back leg when throwing the hook. Stepping over to the right. Just maybe a few inches as you twist the balls of the feet on the front foot. With this little step, it gets your head over to the other side of the guy. And gives you more power than just twisting your shoulders and hips. I have only seen it taught a couple times on KZbin though. My coach is long passed away and now I coach boxing. I can remember him telling me that the step (it’s more of a repositioning) of the back foot is to get your head over and for more power. Hell, I’m sure his coach taught him that as well. But I’m kinda wondering if maybe as a 10 year old, I misunderstood him and that the step with the rear leg is to set up a shift or to cut an angle. Any thoughts on this? As a coach, getting that left hook down is a little challenging for young teens. And I teach the step and also without the step (just a twist). As far as ‘putting the cigarette out’ - I tell them to do that with their back foot when they throw a straight right hand. You’ll hear me yelling “Put that cigarette out!!” I can’t imagine what the people in the office next door are thinking about my non profit club for kids! lol Thanks for the video!

The hook punch is great with all of the specific hook punch technique variations essentially based on differing footwork methods setting-up the hook punch. However, my question is based upon the structural configuration of the arm while executing the hook punch. I know the arm is configured with the forearm and striking fist at a 90 degree angle relative to target point contact. After the hook punch makes contact with the target mass in a configured 90 degree angle upon post contact continuous follow through does the lower forearm of the punching arm remain in a fixed 90 degree angle or: Does the lower forearm contract toward the upper arm. Or: Does the lower forearm extend away from the upper arm?
