You didn't seem to understand, but it is obvious you've not done boxing yourself! It is not only knowing something throughly, but there is a lot of things like when you know how to accomplish it on the bag, mits, and than practicing timing and the distance by sparing every day, you catching the opponent making a mistake, having him leaning towards you (not only straight forward, but sideways mostly), using his motion, your motion and as i said with timing you hook the opponent and usually that is a knockout right there! I polarize for exploring my self for to long.

Great advice! Took me years to get a consistent hook, then it became my favorite punch. The robot hook may feel lame but it has a surprising amount of momentum behind it. Casually rotating your torso with your hook out makes people’s heads feel like balloons in that your hook just goes straight through like their head weighs nothing. Meanwhile, trying to throw an explosive hook with the arm often just turns into a slap. It feels so counter intuitive but you can especially tell when hitting mitts, and you compare your hooks that thud through with the the ones that stop in place.

Most of the hooks we see today are the walking stick hook, thumb up to the sky. This hook is a snap shot of the path of a traditional hook or corkscrew hook. The traditional hook emphasizes coordination of the twisting and shifting of the axis, center, leggs, and ball of the feet. This one fundamental principal I have found most useful in helping my students. Thank you for the video.

Excellent info, thank you so much, always good tips to think about and apply. One thing that helped me was learning lead hooks southpaw. With your strong arm forward it feels less akward and you get a feel for what it should be like. You also realize all the things your body naturally does with its strong side that you have to stop and actively think about with your weak arm. It forces you to break down everything you do and really consider your technique. By the time you get a good rear left arm, you will have understood some things about how to move.

hard2hurt I love your channel, there’s always something good to learn and chew over and you engage your audience, I want to thank you for that. I’m no pro, not even close, but I’ve invested a bit of time for my own personal edification. I started dedicated southpaw practice by getting in a boxing stance, putting my hands up in a high guard and focusing on rotating my left foot and leg from the ground up and getting a good snap, nothing else, many, many times. Then I did the same thing but with a focus on my shoulder, visualized throwing my weight through it. Then I moved on to throwing an elbow, which was a bit trickier, synchronizing the fast rotation of the foot while getting full extension of the elbow and rotating the opposite shoulder for speed and so I wasn’t tripping over myself. I went at it for a while like that, drilling that into my head by repetition. Finally when I opened up the elbow, the hooks were nowhere near mindblowing, but the kinetic chain flowed alot smoother, and my hooks were much better than anything I could produce before. I’m sure with more time and practice they can only get better. I also found that when I went back to my right side, I was more concious of how I did things and I feel like it made me better. And also my lead left improved, I’m guessing thanks to those mind-muscle connectons I made with those drills. I hope this wasn’t too long and made sense and I hope it helps whoever might read it.

Great hook technique coach. One of the best channels on KZbin for this kind of thing. The only thing that I would add here on hook technique - from someone with 20 plus years of boxing experience - is that usually, when you load up, your back heel will come off the ground a bit. As you pivot and come off the heel of the front foot, the back heel drops to the floor to facilitate the weight shift. It really does add some power to the shot.

My left hook has always been my favorite punch. When you get a good pad guy, the amount of power you generate almost looks like you could KO a panzer tank.

Thank you for this. You helped me realize something I've been missing. I noticed it before but I didn't know it was a legit thing or how to put it into words, and ultimately forgot about it. When I first started, I wanted it to be big and powerful, because I don't want to feel like a girl, so I started with late, swinging, sloppy off balance hooks. They pack a punch, but not nearly as much as they could... Because I would find from studying certain people like bob green, that when I got real close to the bag, shortened up my hooks, and threw them squared (rather than shifting my weight off a slip, or a shift, which I could use to load until the hooks) I found that it forced me to engage other muscle groups, like my core, hips and legs... Well, turns out these muscle groups aren't way bigger and way more powerful, but you'll only discover them if your willing to put your ego aside. Man? Wanting to look badass and hit hard just had the opposite effect, it's so Paradoxical. Your right, you have to Ben willing to look stupid for a while. By learning to relax my arms and use those muscles, they were Way harder. And that was just from the start. As men we are way to focused about our arms, chest upper body, thanks to typical "macho" stereotypes and bodybuilding. It's taken a TON of mental effort to Begin to place my "manliness" Less in my arms and chat and whatnot, and more into places I used to never even think about, namely my legs, but hips and core. Especially the hips "ITS ALL IN THE HIPS!" Lol Once you like you said learn to first even coordinate and Use these muscles from a short and uncocked position, once you actually Develope those muscles they will be devastating. With practise. Now add the shift of the slip etc and loading off of, say a straight Right, it is going to be disgusting. Filthy. You know I think this is a standard in various aspects of martial arts called... springing from an unbalanced position. Sure when your weight is shifted percyly to one said, it is all ready for you to just, spring your footwork to the other side... but what when your mid position. What when your weight isn't perfectly shifted. Or your in an awkward position. Can you spring from there? Excercise like this force you to develope power and recruit muscles from awkward, not-preloaded conditions. But in doing so, you develope parts of the muscle and explosiveness, almost shorter portions and faster fibres, you could never isolate with the full range of motion. It shows that sometime, full range, even in working out is not best, sometimes you have o break movements down into tiny portions to recruit fibres in the movement you could never normally recruit, due to momentum removing the need for their recruitment. That was really complicated. I'm drinking coffeeX hopefully someone gets it.

Refreshing to hear somebody talk straight about the realities of learning martial arts. I've been boxing for 15 years and I still make basic mistakes all the time - but I can correct them. A hook for me is a cross between the motion of hurling a rock and a shotput - there is definitely a 'snap' that needs to be learned. As I get older, I find the power is decreasing from my straight/cross. I feel like I push it or drive it too much, whereas my hooks really snap and whack. Use to be the other way round.

Good point that you made around the 4 minute mark. If you work on perfecting the mechanics, you stand a better chance of throwing good punches when your form deteriorates. I forget who said it originally, but there was some high ranking military leader who said "no one ever rises to the occasion. You fall to the level of your preparation." I think that sums up what you're saying here.

I’m not sure who needs to hear this but the greatest line of advice I’ve get heard was “don’t admire you punch” it just means don’t get caught up admiring how good your punch was and get focused to the next task

Recently started using a heavy bag for first time in over 20 years. I’m really noticing how it works the legs and footwork balance is extremely important to throw crisp punches. I’m not really fight training just getting in shape trying to stay young longer.
