Been boxing as an amateur in Eastern Europe since '02, reaching the end of a long career soon and making the transition to coaching...During my time i fought many great amateurs that went on to become known pro boxers and now i wanna pass the knowledge i acquired to the younger generation...But the simple reason that started all that, was a boxing movie from 1976 that my father brought home from a video club back in 1998, called Rocky...So it doesnt really matter how accurate the movie was (it wasn't), it will always hold a special place in my heart because everytime i see it it reminds me how i fell in love with boxing...

@George Burnett Every eastern european boxer uses some variation of the soviet style...Its what we've been taught from day 1...But the term "soviet style" fits a very broad spectrum...Bivol, Beterbiev, Ggg and Usyk were all trained under the soviet system and while they have common elements they ended up utilizing the style differently...Bivol is probably the best example of the original soviet style tho...Distance, control, jab, in and out movement, high guard etc...

I think every martial artist around the world holds a special place in their soul for this movie. For me it was watching the Rocky movies on a warm saturday morning with my Mom, going to my grandparents house to watch the de la Hoya fights (my grandpa's favorite fighter), and then me taking up boxing and muay thai in college as a way to connect with my Grandpa in the afterlife, and discovering so much about what I'm capable of. The movie teaches you to be the person who puts in the long hours, the thousands of repetitions, to humble yourself and do the things that others are 'too good' for. It's a movie that is nourishment for the soul.

@rorro23tk Жыл бұрын
Yeah they work, but only because Joe's body was already conditioned on that time. Just like in martial arts, it's not wise to order a beginner fighter to break 10 tough and broad wooden tables in his first day of training. It takes time and master the easier conditioning exercises like knuckle push ups, knuckle plank, go around the training center only using knuckles (plank position), hit the heavy bag, etc

Aside from some of Rocky's more questionable training tactics, I think it's also important to understand that Rocky straight up never defended himself. One thing this video touched on was when you are working out, whether it be for boxing, or just in general getting or staying in shape. Much of it is mental. You need discipline in order to keep the regimen going as well as executing the training properly. But most importantly, you need to feel great while doing it. Feel tough, feel badass, feel strong, and thus be motivated. This was one of the things I learned from the Army. To be badass you have to feel badass, you have to experience it, you have to believe it. You can't run 10 miles if you don't believe you can. If you believe you can run 20, what is 10 miles? Its only half! Its amazing what a little motivation will do. Motivation can be infectious as well. Pump up those around you, those working with you, and you will see gains as well. This isn't some feel good measure, this stuff is real. I won't lie, when I was a young soldier and got all these speeches and pep talks in formations, it seemed corny, it seemed almost like I was being treated like a kid in elementary school PE. But looking back, it allowed me to do things that would otherwise be unimaginable.

That movie still gives me goosebumps over 45 years later. He really keyed in so perfectly to people's emotions. Don't forget, he wrote Rocky when he wasn't famous yet and wisely insisted on playing the lead when the studios threatened to not buy the script unless they could use the actor of their choosing. He said no which would've taken incredible confidence when he was a nobody who wasn't rich or famous. It would be like turning down millions today if you're just some average Joe.

I LOVE the meat hitting part because it establishes the differences between Rocky and Apollo. When Rocky arrives to do his training with the meat, Paulie surprises him with a news crew that wants to film him training, so he gives them a "demonstration" by hitting the meat. Cut to Apollo Creed's office, Duke, Apollo's main trainer is watching the news footage of Rocky training intensely. He seems surprised/nervous after seeing Rocky smash the ribs of those hanging meats. He calls out to Apollo "Hey Champ, I think you outta come take a look at this boy you're gonna be fighting...it looks like he means business..." but Apollo is completely out of it. He's setting up talk shows and sending flowers to his wife and just messing around. "Yeah yeah, Duke, I mean business too..." he says still half distracted. Duke frowns and turns back to the Rocky footage. Rocky has completed training and his fists are now covered in blood. The News Reporter holds up Rocky's bloody fist and signs off...almost as if to tell Duke "This is going to happen to Apollo if he doesn't get his head in the game!" It's my favorite scene from the movie!

Regarding behind-the-head pressing: It's hazardous but not dangerous if you respect the hazard. If your shoulder mobility is sufficient that you can let the bar rest on the shoulders without it stretching the joints then you have basically nothing to worry about - if it does stretch then gentle moderate weight work will open up the shoulders and this will benefit the shoulder in general. Doing it fast should be fine so long as control is not sacrificed, but the way Rocky is shown to be doing them while exhausted, that's probably quite dangerous, it is not a 'fail safe' movement. That being said, if you're able to do the weight as cardio or conditioning it's probably an acceptable risk as long as you are experienced with the movement.
@sethmorris4767 Жыл бұрын
Agreed, all exercises can be good if you understand the risks and correct form.
@mr.doctorcaptain1124 Жыл бұрын
I used to do behind the head pressed for the reasons you described. But once the weight hits 250+lbs, it doesn't really matter how slowly or controlled you do it, it's just too much pressure on that shoulder joint in a position where it is not optimally stable. I never had an injury, but I swapped to the front press because that weight was slowly wearing my shoulders down. After I swapped my shoulders healed right back up.
@Finvarra Жыл бұрын

A lot of boxers struggle with fighting bare knuckle because they instinctively throw combos like they do in gloves and end up breaking their hand a lot of the times. Also not covering their face like they should because in bare knuckle fighters try to cut your face up so you struggle to see and they can land one in and also get points for obvious damage. Chicken chasing absolutely improves legwork, endurance, and flexibility. It's dynamic too, you must use your brain and adapt on the spot to changing scenarios instead of repetition, you are trying to outsmart the chicken (harder to do than it sounds). This is all dependant on your mobility. Biggest stereotypes are:"don't do behind neck shoulder press", "don't let your knees go over your toes while squatting" etc. As I said all depends from your mobility, and first thing any PT should do first is to check your mobility, anatomy, muscle strength etc. Meanwhile when I got to the gym, I see they have some training plan, which they give to their proteges and don't really care about things I mentioned. It's even worst. I can see most of these people have bad form and range reduction due to muscle tensions etc., and PT instead of pointing these and fix, they are giving them machine exercises where they only deepen their bad form.

I’d love to watch a version of this for Hajime No Ippo. It’s an anime but the author was a huge boxing fan so he put in alot of detail on how fight’s and training actually work usually focusing on style matchups and drilling techniques. Certainly more realistic to boxing then Rocky even with the anime effects.

Back in army basic training at Ft Knox, in the 80's, the drill sergeant would have us running up and down the stairs when it was icy outside. Up on the inside, down on the outside. Man, I have nightmares about that craziness. Anyway, it was a fantastic workout! After a week of that, we'd go back out in better weather and it felt like you could run twice as fast. Just don't fall, it hurts like hell🤕🩼.

Hey Tony! Love your channel! Started watching as a kid and I know lots of your viewers are also kids, so please mention that you should start easy and build up slowly with the body condition. There’s gonna be kids that watch this and have their friend hit them with stuff in the stomach as hard as they can. Which is Dangerous. Most people know to progress slowly, but there’s a lot of youngsters here that dont

When I was Boxing i had the issue of keeping my hands up so my coach figured out how to get me to keep my hands up, She Strapped me up in the Sparring Gear and made me go 3 rounds with another member of the Gym who has been there for a few years and every time I dropped my hands he would tag me in the head just hard enough for me to not want to get hit again. and after a few months of light sparring, I learned to keep my hands up.

Tony, I remember reading the Sports Illustrated with Roy Jones Jr (1990s) on the cover in his little overalls… in that edition he talks about training by chasing roosters with his Dad. I remember thinking at the time “wtf!? He Rocky?!” But I guess it paid off for him 😂 me? I’d blow my knee out.

There are a number of areas where "Old school" training in Rocky I disagree with, the drinking of raw eggs because of possible salmonella, the women weaking legs line (Ask Tyson Fury), punching the cow, chasing the chicken. The areas I agree with the Rocky films on are; Roadwork, core work, speed ball (thanks for showing me how to hit the speed ball btw), med balls. I personally liked Rocky 3's training montage btw while Mick made Rocky a warrior, Apollo and Duke made Rocky a boxer.

Rocky cut man in the movie was played by Al Silvani, he was a real life boxing trainer and stunt man / Technical Advisor in Hollywood. He trained a lot of world champions and was a sought after trainer, he trained Robert De Niro for his roll in Raging Bull. I would assumed he helped with the training sence in Rocky I, Rocky II , & Rocky III since he played Rocky cut man in all three movies. Al was even inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame.

When I was a kid I actually used Rocky 3 to help me train- when Rocky and Mr T are throwing punches, throw the same punch just as hard. That big final fight where Rocky has changed his style to work off the jab and Mr T is throwing heavy artillery is a nightmare to keep up with! I don't think my punching form was great but I was working up a sweat alright!

I remember back in the day (80's), watching something with Linford Christie in it (or it might have been Daley Thompson) who advised that sit ups should never be done with your hands behind your head as it pulls on the lower part of your neck and can cause injuries. Much better to place your fingertips on your forehead as it also makes it harder to do said sit up/crunches.

While a real prize fighter wouldn’t use the methods/tools that Rocky used I think the muscles they are working are similar. Also sport science has made huge changes since the 70s. One of the main points of these scenes are to show how hard and gritty Rocky is compared to the money and fancy gym and equipment Apollo has. Building the whole Rocky is hungrier theme.

Rocky was a special movie and I believe that it has inspired tens of thousands youngsters to do exercises. I-ve seen the movie around `81-82. I was a swimmer in that time and I had nothing to do with boxing all in my life. But - thanks for the Rocky movie - I still can do push-up with one hand at age of 49. Most of my friends can`t do 5 "normal" one.

@9:29 Yes behind the head barbell press is very bad since it puts your shoulder in a position that is not stable and aligned with the socket that the shoulder sits in. It also pinches the nerve endings and tendons within your shoulder. Often this results in shoulder impingement, which can lead to many future problems and isn't easily fixable. This is very common in baseball players because of the way they have to throw the ball.

in all of his movies with the exception of rocky 3, where apollo trained him and at least Tried to get rocky to have some semblence of footwork and head movent, rocky just never was trained properly..its as if defense was an unknown concept to him or his trainer.. all he had was agression, endurance, a great chin and tons of heart as well as power in his punches.. problem was that he didnt have the timing or footwork need to Deliver those shots unless he got his opponent on the ropes or in a corner

I trained as an amateur super heavyweight after working 10-12 hrs of working in construction, it was something that i enjoyed doing. The easiest guys to beat were the ones coming right at you like Rocky, you stay relaxed keep your hands high,they will always give you an opening,use their over aggressive style against them.The only time i was stunned was when i was too aggressive & left my chin flappin in the wind.

The stomach hitting works when you tighten your abs upon impact. This force causes the outer lining in the front of your stomach to become far more dense. Do not do this type of conditioning until you have strengthened your abs a bit.
