if you capture an old vhs video with an 16:9 recorder, you also have to konvert your video from 16:9 to 4:3 to match the correct scale.

Hi. MP4 in Sony A6000 series cameras comes out as squashed 1440 x 1080 so stretching it to 1920 in the editor actually corrects the footage. If you make sure that your sequence is 1920 x 1080 first, then drag your clip in, you can set the dimension ratio to be 133 by 100. Or do what is in this video to have 100 by 75. Both ratios equal 4:3 which is the correct ratio adjustment. MP4 seems to record with rectangular pixels which editors read as square so we are just correcting that by this trick. For me, I can record in AVCHD instead but that's a larger file size and it messes with the audio sync.

I happened upon your video after a Google search. Cannot speak for everyone, but I have MY ANSWER as to why I would like to squash 4:3 conversions to 16:9. I own two different TV tuner cards with analogue (composite and S-video) inputs. I have owned two different analogue to USB converters (think... convert your VHS tapes to DVD hardware). Without exception, all produced vertically stretched video when captured from a 16:9 source that was outputted as a composite/RCA video signal. This is also a common problem when recording over the air (OTA) digital sub-channels. I just "evaluated" Apowersoft Video Converter Studio and it converted a test video perfectly. Almost. There were random horizontal scan lines in the conversion from 720x480 to 1920x480 that had me debating which was worst, the letter boxed vertically stretched video or the full screen 16x9 video with noise. Note: I am not interested in the $50/year license renewal fee for this software so I stopped after this one "successful" test.

Excuse the typo on "the conversion from 720x480 to 1920x480". Of course, I meant I have converted (16x9) with a final resolution 1920x1080(both i and p) at 29.97, 30 and 60f/s.

It's hard to decide which looks worse, squashed video or when they fill in the black with the same video but all blurry. I see that a lot when people take vertical aspect ratio video with a cell phone. It just looks sooo bad. In my opinion the worst thing to ever happen to video is when they made cell phones able to take vertical video.
