Thanks, Tony. I'm a full-time commercial photographer and I've been using the R6 for about 6 months now. I thought I knew the camera pretty well, but this taught me a thing or two. You guys are awesome.

Yes, please do. In the R6 II videos I've seen the author said what some of the settings should be but didn't explain WHY a certain setting was selected. You go into MUCH more detail.

Adding to this. The various AF modes have been driving me crazy. I'm coming from a 5D3, and it's been painful so far experimenting in the field. Lots of out of focus shots, and the camera is not locking onto the eye and tracking it.

Having just watched the video for the R6, an updated version coving R6 mk 2 would be very beneficial as many of the menus are different. Ditto the comments on AF modes, the WHY behind some of the settings, also setting the back button focus is worth revision. I've bookmarked this video and will return.

You know, I gotta say, you always come through with the best videos that we all can understand and get the most from. I recently bought the Canon R6 and looked at several tutorials... which would leave a lot out, go too fast, and/or confuse me. But you really DO Rock. Why did I bother to look at anyone else's tutorial.

I have learned a ton in the 1hr and realized how much I didn't know about this camera. One addition I learned while I was walking through your suggested settings - I turned on the display focus chart regardless of auto focus or not and wow mind blown, I push the auto focus button, then I can manually change it with the lens dial and there are red highlights that appear around the layer that I am manually focusing towards... I was doing this to focus on the outside through blinds and window and I could auto focus on the blinds, then manually focus to outside and it looks excellent.

One (very!) minor point about navigating the menu system: After pressing "menu" the "Q" button quickly switches between each "bank" of menu options (red, purple, blue, more purple, yellow, orange, green). Once you're used to it, that can speed up menu navigation quite a bit. This is true on many Canon cameras, not just "R" series.

I have been a Panasonic user since before the GH1. Owned video cameras before that and moved to each new GH camera up to the GH4. Months ago I bought a Canon M6 mk2 to have higher resolution stills and experiment with DPAF for 4K video. Loved the camera but it had its limits for video. Finally just bit the bullet and bought a R6. This is what we always wanted the GH successor to be. Such an amazing camera. Now I’m here learning more about this new sexy beast. Subscribed after years of just watching.

A couple points that were not touched in the tutorial: 1. A remote is not even necessary anymore. Remote Live View shooting in the Camera Connect app works so well and lets you see composition, adjust settings and move the focus point 2. Electronic 1st. Curtain can introduce "half bokeh" when the shutter speed is very fast (

I am so thankful for this video. My 60D broke yesterday. (yah I am a little behind the times). I ordered the R6. I found the pdf camera manual online and 😨😳 yikes! I have so much to learn. Your video is so much easier to understand and veryhelpful. I will likely have to watch it over and over to get it all down. I especially appreciate all the little settings and details. I would be one of those people thinking my camera was broken when I just pressed the lock button or something haha. Thanks so much. I haven't found anything so straight forward and detailed. Lots of info! I may have to slow down the playback speed. I thought I was in fast forward there for a while- I kept pausing and rewinding. Ahahaha. Keep up the great videos! Can't wait to buy your books and videos soon. Just discovered you guys a few weeks ago when searching for off camera flash tutorials.

A couple settings I didn't like for taking photos of downhill mountain bikers and I'm going to go back to I think Display Performance of Smooth and Eco Mode Off and see how the battery life goes. If it dies too quick, I'll go back to your recommendations - they definitely work GREAT! Thanks!

I appreciated that your tutorial indicates the tab and line number of each of the topics you discussed as well as your tip to put a sticky on the camera back noting how/where to find certain key info. This leads me to the following suggestion. With the expectation that I will be an R6 owner, I downloaded the massive advanced user manual this weekend. YIKES, It's nearly 900 pages! Since a tutorial is a wonderful tool for anyone new to the subject at hand, I think it would be helpful to everyone if your future tutorials would cite the page number or section of the user manual where the specific info you are discussing can be found, as well as the date of the manual version you are citing In perusing the downloaded pdf, I felt like an elementary grade child using a college level text book trying to solve a homework problem. Very sad.

I think the greatest lesson for anyone considering any brand/model of camera, is to make time to watch these comprehensive reviews. Then you can truly decide if you wish to shell out the money. The one question that should always be answered: if I buy a particular camera, can I keep it for 5 years to get a 'return' on my investment ? Photography can be a VERY expensive hobby.

Just subbed , thank you for sharing . I just purchased this camera and another 10K worth of their 2.8 lenses . Sheesh ,I used to think 2K was a lot for a lens when I bought all the 2.8’s for my Nikon DSLR , but here I am spending almost $3500 before tax for a canon 70-200 2.8 mirrorless lens? I’m in Canada so we pay a premium also . I own a Fuji XT1, and find the menus daunting on the Canon R6 , and much harder to navigate. I’m sure if I study often enough, I’ll actually be able to use the canon

Hi tony. Great video about R6. Thanks a lot. I've one question about Electronic shutter. I did some tests with my R6 and got that at higher SS there is some lost of light with Electronic shutter mode special at high shutter speeds (1/500 +). My test results (with ISO 100, M mode, One Shot, all photos processed in dpp4 converted to monochrome and all lens corrections disabled, sharpness and noise reduction set to 0) were: At 1/8000 SS the EV loss is roughly between -0,70 and -1,20, compared to Mechanical; At 1/2000 SS the EV loss is roughly between -0,20 and -0,35, compared to Mechanical; At 1/500 SS the EV loss is roughly between -0,05 and -0,10, compared to Mechanical; Under 1/500 the EV loss is further less and less noticeable. With the EFC Shutter mode the results are between Mechanical and Electronic shutter. Any thoughts about that?

The sensor cleaning function has also an undocumented side effect on Canon cameras. You can hear the shutter sound during it. The camera takes a photo and looks at hot pixels and masks them out - at least from jpeg-files. You should have the lens cap on for this.

I keep making the same mistake of watching these tutorials, only to discover, because I have the R6 MK2, the menus are different than the R6.The 1-point AF you recommend is greyed out on my R6 MK2. However, it doesn't seem to have the Eye Detect symbol either! Tony, this is a great tutorial as usual, thank you. In your section on HEIF vs JPEG, you mention that Lightroom handles HEIF pretty well. Actually Lightroom still doesn't. Canon files have a ".hif" extension, and Lightroom can't recognize them. Tried changing the extension to ".heif" to match Apple files; it doesn't work either. Tried using Canon DPP and converted a file to TIFF. It transformed a .hif file to 110 MB! The R6 RAW files are only 20 MB. Searched the forums and found several have experienced the same since the R5/6 were released. Oddly, the Preview app on my Mac will open the file directly, but there's no edit capability. It's too bad, because the material we would have wrt HDR could be so much better in editing a 10 bit HEIF compared to a JPEG. Adobe remains silent on whether they will support the Canon .hif format in the future.

An issue of R6 mechanical shutter. (I have tested 6 different R6 with the same results, which means that it may be the same for every single R6 out there). At fast shutter speeds (especially in 1/8000) the shot with mechanical shutter mode is darker on the upper half and brighter on the lower part by almost one stop. That does not happen in ''electronic 1st curtain'' or in ''electronic'' mode. In these modes the image has normal exposure uniformity. Thank you

Lol yea that sound option would he nice on certain occasions. At a family reunion I asked the waiter to take some shots of our large group. I forgot it was on electric shutter and when he handed it back to me he was 'I didn't hear a click so just kept holding my finger down. He ended up taking around 100 shots of our group lol.

Tony and Chelsea you are fantastic ive learnt so much from your tutorials. Quick question at 2 minutes 30 in this video you talk about the rear screen capabilities, my R6 isnt doing this. Is there a setting or could it have a fault. Look forward to your response. TIA
