Alex cause of your experiences I bought a Champion lpg/petrol powered stand alone generator for use in v cold climates (I’ll only carry it in the depths of winter). I didn’t isolate my cab from the living compartment; I want the whole vehicle to maintain an even temperature. Even my cupboards are designed to have big air gaps to ensure no compartment can freeze or suffer from damp or mold.

There is a place called Øverbygd in Troms /Norway. There is a military base there squeezed between the mountains. I was there for 3 years serving Norway. Right in that town during clear cold conditions temp drops to -49-52 since it’s down between mountains. I had a car back then, the car froze completely. Had to move it into a warm garage.

Romantising of the extreme colds in the nordics is pretty awkward to see as a person who does have to live through such season in a small home in a remote town and having to get the car running every single day with all means necessary to commute to work and back.
@MispronouncedAdventures
@MispronouncedAdventures 9 ай бұрын
I can’t quite tell if this a negative comment or an observation. Why “awkward” as such? to see sometimes enjoying the cold? Whats normal you, definitely isn’t for me? then again, I see tourists romanising scotland and highlands when they come and visit. Which can be a bit Awkward I guess to see them taking all there photos and selfies, about things I consider normal. that being said, this is my third winter living in my van in the Nordic, and I do need to get it running every day for power and driving

After a few days of -30-38 my battery was a block of ice and gave up. Had to bring it inside to defrost and charge it over 2 days. Will try and start my car tomorrow once it warms up to -15.C these past few days have been a bit much for weak batteries 🙈 I will need a battery heater and an inline charger plus a better block heater - the joys of living in the Arctic! My starter battery is under the driver seat in the cab, so not as cold as outside, but still pretty darn cold and yeah it’s also a weak battery in kind of needs replacing ( I think it’s the original battery The van came with ) . So I think in my case me putting on charge isn’t necessarily putting much energy into it, but the actual energy going into it is heating it up and makes it work a bit better.

English men act like the worlds greatest explorers until they face; cold, snow, wind, leaves, waves, rain or any mildly difficult conditions. So many people routinely live and work in extreme conditions, -30C to 50C on a daily basis, from the Nordic Countries, North America, Asia, Etc. They do it with their families, day in, day out, maintaining educational, work and social schedules, getting children to school everyday without pretending they are embarking on a never before trodden adventure.

I’m Scottish, not English. So British explorers. I can’t speak for the general British public and how they deal with mildly difficult conditions, those are not really issues for me. have spent 10 years professionally guiding and leading expeditions around the globe from the Himalaya, jungles, deserts and more. I’ve not pretending this is never before trodden adventure? it’s also fairly obvious that it’s “normal” for people of the Nordic. I go to a supermarket and a café in the video. Although the Nordic people don’t usually live in campervans in the Arctic. Just like any foreigners going to a different country and experiencing something different from their own countries, normality it’s a bit of an adventure for them

Congratulations on the new record low temp! I was just wondering if you add anything to your diesel? - as diesel tends to turn to gel/sludge at really low temps. Maybe this was the cause of the engine starting issue?

,the Nordic diesel is all winter treated at the pumps so generally nothing is needed to be added. Unless extremely cold. Hi Alex I would have thought a heating mat under your vehicle battery controlled to between say -5 to 0 degrees C. Ideally the battery and sensor would be insulated too. A Victron Smart Sense could be used to monitor and control the heater working off Bluetooth. Also, I have a Battery Master which automatically tops up the vehicle battery from the leisure battery. It operates in the range 0.3 - 0.7 volts below the leisure battery and I think it can deliver 2amps. I was wondering if it could power the heating mat and/or the top up the vehicle battery. So as the battery gets cold it's voltage drops causing the Battery Master to supply it with power. Just a thought.
@MispronouncedAdventures
@MispronouncedAdventures 9 ай бұрын
Heating the starter it really hasn’t been too necessary for me as I’ve had no issues in the past starting below -30, but seemly -35 is a bit much. I too actually have a trickle charger only one amp which again keeps the starter battery charge about 0.2 below the leisure system. However, in this case, it wasn’t so much about lack of power in the battery. It was just too cold to crank. When I added the 30 amp charger. It helped heat the batteries chemistry which allowed it to work.

Oh no! Beside that awesome long lorry I also saw two potential international incidents ... First the flying sparks could cause a big fire that could burn down the shack. And second the drone makes way too much noise, and thus disturbs all animals and people living in that neighbourhood. You're really a naughty, naughty boy, Mr. Pronounced Adventures. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

You’d be lucky to get any of those sparks to catch that building a light, which is made for fires in that cold temperature. As for drone noise, I do fly consciously when there are other people around that is a bit of a frozen lake next to a main road there.

When your battery voltage is under 11v aint no deezil engine starting matey. The voltage sag is proportional to the minus temps. If I were you - I would carry a lithium power pack, but wire some 25mm fused cable directly into the cab into an anderson plug so you can "boost pack" it from your comfy drivers seat as all that screwdrivering and risk of accidentally shorting wires (and blowing victron kit) etc just doesn't seem worth it to me. Other than that great vid!

Mine was one of the variations of a single starter battery and no aux bat, although in this case, it wasn’t the issue with the battery being flat. issue was the chemistry of the battery was physically too cold fully cranking out required. Applying 30 amp charger didn’t move any real amount of energy into the battery in eight minutes it was running . The charge current was enough to heat the internal chemistry

@@MispronouncedAdventures Your SLA electrolyte could have been nearly frozen if its SoC had dropped too low overnight, 40% SoC will freeze at -10C. Do you have a temp sensor on the +ve term of the battery? Overnight trickle would provide some continuous heating, though how much in -38C will be down to experimentation (min temp to charge would be +5C, ideally +25C) but it would keep the SoC high. I have a Jackery with the wifi app and LNEX Bluetooth 5 SLA Battery Monitor (from Amz US) so if I need to charge/trickle I can do that without going outside the house as it's too far for an extension lead!

Literally no reason important reason, the overall goal is to get a photograph of the vans dashboard showing -40c. As an objective, it means it’s fun, I get to travel to different areas ( non-touristy areas ) because I’m following the weather. Additionally, I’ve got a photograph of the same van when it’s +40° outside, so it would be fun to have an opposite and to have taken the van to a 80° temperature Difference

Have a DC DC starter for my Starterbattery. Small dumb orion with 10A, completely automatic, you charge with your housebattery your starter battery. For me important, cause my wheelchair lift is at the starterbattery. No power equals not getting in the car. It only charges to 12,8v for not wearingout the battery to much.
@MispronouncedAdventures

I have a trickle charger which automatically manages itself. In this case. It wasn’t so much lack of charge which was the issue. It was just the batteries chemistry was physically too cold to crank. Adding my 30 amp charger didn’t add much energy to the battery, but the current going into it, heated the chemistry, allowing it to work

Unfortunately, the starter battery Acacian is quite awkward to do that warm water trick as it’s based in a tray inside the cabin drivers seat base. But you are correct. In the principle of the issue. It was too cold opposed to flat. Applying the 30 amp charger did a pretty good job at heating the core of the battery’s chemistry via the current opposed to actual power needed. And thank you regarding the commenter. I consider myself due to the nature of my job, being a guide all over the world that I’m rather considerate to a local population and tourist to like.

Hi Alex, we have followed you for the last two winter trips, and really enjoy all your videos, - thanks for all the helpful tips! We are currently on the way to North Cape and hit extreme temps on the Norwegian / Swedish border, at Røros, (-36 was the record!). Our Ebersbacher diesel heater has stopped working twice at Minus 25, leaving us without heat. It works fine above that temperature. Any advice on the operating limits of the Eber? You seem to be functioning below that level! Thanks in advance! Fiona and Matthias

Hopefully you enjoy your trip and sorry to hear about your heater. What particularly is the “not working” and is it displaying any error code? My Chinese diesel air heater has been working down to -37 overnight temps however, recently I had issues with my Webasto engine preheater because even the Arctic diesel was causing the pump issues

Thanks so much for the reply Alex - I know it takes a lot of hard work on social media! We had an error code of ‘12’ overheating, but this was looked at and cleared by a garage mechanic. It cut out again for two nights once the temp dropped below about minus 28. It would run for a short while and then blow cold and shut down repeatedly. Above that temp, it runs, no problem. Interesting to know that you have managed to get to Minus 37 with your heater. Our fuel is Swedish winter diesel. We see how it goes, as we go up along the coast to Hammerfest. We are a converted Ford Tranist as well, all the way from the west of Ireland! Look forward to your next video! Fiona

@fionagallagher7409 odd, normally a overheat error, is either the fan has become stuck or the air vents cabin heating side has become blocked. But below specific cold temperature doesn’t make much sense
@fionagallagher7409
@fionagallagher7409 9 ай бұрын
Yep, the initial error was probably because we had inadvertently blocked the outlet fan. Not sure why it cut out after we had the error cleared. Once the temp rose above minus 28, it would start for us again. Eberspacher manual operation range says about minus 30 is the lower limit. At the moment we are very mild, only minus 6, so no problem! It ran all day yesterday for us at a range of minus 18 to minus 11, so that is good. Will see how we get on. Thanks for the advice, and interesting to note your preheater had trouble at those temps! We hope to be at North cape by 26 Feb.. with a bit of luck!!
@MispronouncedAdventures
@MispronouncedAdventures 9 ай бұрын
@fionagallagher7409 hopefully it remains working for you and it was not a consistent issue below that temperature. Yeah, the engine preheater itself was starting without problem it just then wouldn’t ignite it. It couldn’t pump the fuel

Not at all, roads are super grippy. Leaving the engine preheater on, could’ve been an option. although it’s not too much of an issue, the engine preheater starts, it just takes a little bit longer to warm up. The bigger issue that day was the starter battery.
